The DoD Magnetometer document told me exactly what this place was. It was a Magnetic observatory used for monitoring of high levels of magnetic flux cause by Nuclear weapons testing and detonations. Back during the cold war this station, along with a global NATO network of stations, was used to monitor the Russians. If they did any Nuclear tests, even underground tests, you could detect it because the Electromagnetic Pulse, or EMP, which is a byproduct of a Nuclear detonation is so powerful it causes the fluxgate Magnetometer to go off scale even 1000's of miles away. They used those paper graph recorders to document it. The collapse of the soviet union in 1991 and the Russian Nuclear disarmament treaties that followed meant places like this were no longer required. The reason it's on this remote island was not just for secrecy but also because of the quiet magnetic background.

@@nics-systems-electric I worked for a defense contractor in the 1980's. They made a system called AMOS which stood for Automated Magnetic Observatory System. It would also detect solar flares since they also give off EMP's.

The equipment was made by Canadian Applied Research Limited. To provide another date, the company took on that name in May 1957 and merged with another company in 1960.

IDEA: what if you brought a generator or Ecoflow power station or something there and connect the building to power? you could see if any of the equipment still works! also, this video is SUPER cool! great job! maybe also look at the tiny building near it

@@nics-systems-electric if you used an inflatable raft or something, you could probably fit an Ecoflow power station on it.

What it looks like to me is a monitoring station for seismic activity. The paper would scroll at a constant rate and those little needles at the top would write in a line but the line would get distorted when seismic activity occurs. This was an early way of keeping track of these events and their strengths. Makes sense too since you’re in BC
Edit: ignore absolutely all of what I just said. This is a magnetometer and the Canadian defence government used to use sites like these for magnetically detecting the presence of submarines. Pretty cool. The paper recording technology is very similar to that used for recording seismic readings so that’s where I got that idea

interesting the old technology, but little is understood except that there was a log generators on the concrete bases and the AC-DC power supplies that you filmed and the old scrolling paper recorders, it is a network of magnetic sensors / magnetometer, all analog and thermionic valve technology, it does not seem anything military, but just a research center on magnetic fields, but since magnetism flows into various fields, both scientific and military, it could be an underwater network to locate old submarines or indeed to record anomalies in the magnetic field caused by nuclear tests in the world or by solar winds, too many cables that go into the water for me are sensors located underneath, some local elder could be useful to give information
