How Your Body Heals Cuts, Scrapes, and Puncture Wounds to the Skin

  • MEDICAL ANIMATION TRANSCRIPT: An injury to the skin, such as a cut, scrape, or puncture wound kills nearby cells and damages underlying structures and triggers the complex process of repairing the skin. Wound healing is a three-step process. The inflammatory phase begins immediately upon injury. Blood vessels constrict to reduce blood loss. Then, platelets arrive to plug the leak. The platelet plug initiates the clotting mechanism by facilitating the reactions of plasma proteins called clotting factors, which interact to form a fibrin clot. After the clot forms, the blood vessels vasodilate and become more porous to allow white blood cells to leave the blood vessel and populate at the site of injury. During this process called phagocytosis, white blood cells eat debris and kill bacteria, reducing the risk of infection. The proliferative phase begins two days to three weeks after injury. The first step in the proliferative stage is granulation. Connective tissue cells, called fibroblasts, lay a matrix of collagen that reinforces the wound and provides structure for other cells. Collagen then contracts to pull together the margins of the wound. Angiogenesis, or the growth of new blood vessels, begins almost simultaneously and supplies oxygen to the repairing cells. Epithelialization is the restoration of the protective skin barrier. Epithelial cells migrate from the margins of the wound, protected by the scab, until they meet. Eventually, the scab falls off. The remodeling phase begins several weeks after the injury and can continue for years. During this phase, a new, more organized collagen matrix forms in the wound bed and capillaries disappear, leaving an avascular scar. One possible complication of wound healing is keloid formation. A keloid results from an overgrowth of granulation tissue extending beyond the borders of the original wound. Composed of mostly collagen, keloids are slow-growing. They do not regress spontaneously, and tend to reoccur after excision. A common initial treatment for keloids includes multiple injections of corticosteroids to help reduce the size of the scar. ♪ [music] ♪

@@SecureHandle I actually did a bit more research into this: scabs dry out the wound, which reduces the presence of the fluids required to get repair materials to the wound. This *does* reduce bleeding and chance of infection, but also increases scarring and time taken to heal the wound. In general you should keep your scabs warm and moist, as this allows the wound to heal faster while still not exposing it. Lots of ointment can also keep scabs from being ripped off by applied bandages, but in that case it’s better to just replace your bandages more often.

I had been in a biking accident once and I have wounds all over my body. The wounds are It's really severe to point that every wound have this burning feel to it. I even got a bit of fever back then. Luckily I didn't break any bones. I just let the fall roll me onto the ground. I even got keloids on a big wound in my knee but it diminishes as time goes on. The healing process took like a month where all wounds are close and I can move back to normal but inside the wounds it's still healing because I still feel pain in my wounds. I didn't go to the hospital or anything I just rest at home clean my wounds and change bandage everyday. I took some painkillers so I will not be pain all the time and eventually my body heal itself back. We took it for granted by it's just amazing how our body can fix itself. We are even better than machines. I mean machines when it's broken you need a Repairman to fix but our body can cure itself on its own without relying to anyone.

Notable lack of the mention of fat cells, which play a large role in wound healing.

I heard wound don't heal, but continuously repair until you died, it could reopen if the body ran out of material to repair them (some vitamin or something)

Its basically a super power, amd just to think that some small animals that can actually regrow limbs will get you thinking that maybe theres some life form out that that can actually regrow major limbs

I like how people think differently than their bodies. If only the body could somehow talk to you thru your brain that you shouldn't peel that scab off.
