Definitely skin the outside and keep the smooth lines of the 'Busa, rat rod or not.

Sweet! You do magic with metal. I always use the adage, "measure twice cut once." I was wondering do you have a metal stretcher, I have a wood stretcher in my shop. (>: If not Spanner Monkey probably has a few in their catalog in case the preverbale screwup occurs. I would fiberglass it and leave the frame expose in the inside. On the openings for the sockets for the frame mount, maybe a reverse scoop facing towards the rear so you dont have a wind whistle as you approach warp speed. What color is this beast gonna be? Nice work my man.

I'm not sure what the expense would be, but I'd bet they make the plastic that they skin airplanes with in a clear version. That would add almost zero weight, and keep your skeleton visible, And, it'd be flexible enough to create the shape you want and durable in the wind. The skeleton is awesome, though, and it will definitely give it a unique look having it visible. Well done, sir!

@moonfleet41 Nice work Del and I have to say because I am a geek of the first condition the first thougth that came to mine when you talked about skining from the inside was actually 3D printing panels which could clip onto the frame and even wrap around it. Not only would it allow the skelenton to be seen but also allow for easy maintence by popping a panel out when you need to. The finish can be made mirror smooth with acetone and if you want to you could spray over it anyway. I doubt you are such a 3D print officinado but I can promise you you will have a maker space somewhere close that could help out for sure. Just a thought...

Is it possible to shape clear perspex over the skeleton? Would give you aerodynamics and favourable weight

Dunno how practical this would be, but I'm just brainstorming.
Make a wooden form to fit on the inside of the exoskeleton, but with its outer profile following the contours of the outside of the exoskeleton (dubious spelling).
Then heat form clear or coloured 'Perspex' over the mould.
You would then have a light fairing, which still showed all your beautiful metalwork.

Hi Gary, I follow exactly that you're saing, very cool thinking, but I image wood former would be a six month projct for me all by itself!! ... I've a plan that mayt ake a little less than that!!

See the Britten documentary from New Zealand. He did the same type of thin frame to start with.

Are you making a form to build your fairing around, or is that going to be part of the fairing?
