He saw visions of the soldier protecting good folk even knowing the Hartfield beast could rend his spectral form to oblivion.
In refusing the soldier and allowing Emily to suffer in her mourning for the ghostly soldier, he was failing to uphold his love for his wife
and her wish for him to set right that which is wrong with love in his heart
The flickering light became steady once more as he gathered his lantern to seek the soldier so that he may discover what must be done to free him from his unfinished business.
