Dod Procter: A collection of 35 paintings (HD)
Description: "Painter, born in London; later lived mostly in Newlyn, Cornwall, and is mostly associated with pictures of the people and countryside of that area.
Studied art with Stanhope Forbes in Newlyn c1907-1908; also studied at Atelier Colarossi in Paris.
The Newlyn School remained one of the strongest influences on her work; she was not, for instance, interested in abstract art. Some influences of Renoir and Picasso have been detected in her creative production.
Notable qualities in her paintings: the strength of her monumental figure paintings and a sympathy with femininity in her paintings of women and girls.
The high point in Procter's career was in the 1920s. Her work was particularly successful in America due to its similarity to certain currents in the contemporary art scene there.
Celebrated paintings: Morning , exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London in the Spring of1927 and acclaimed picture of the year (now in Tate Britain, London), and Virginal , also known as Woman with a Dove, which was turned down by the Hanging Committee of the Academy in 1929. The rejection of Virginal caused a sensation and the painting, acclaimed by the press, was subsequently exhibited at the Leicester Galleries to enthusiastic audiences."
