Vegetable oil with my step bit worked well on my stainless steel brew kettle. Also - instead of a utility knife, I found that my rounded file worked perfectly for cleaning the rough edges from the hole.
Nice job and good detail! I think a ball valve is pretty much essential for any large sized pot and very easy to install.. I'm thinking about moving my dip tube over to the side and start whirl pooling.. for one, I use hop bags but would like to do away with them to try and get better utilization.. or maybe try and find a better solution for filtering the hops and cold break into the fermenter.. I also just installed a site glass and LOVE It! Video coming soon!
Stainless just takes longer due to the harder metal (of course) and you need to use plenty of lubricant and let the bit cool off occasionally. It can get very hot and you risk breaking it if you dont let it cool. As for the pickup tube, I think they are def necessary. W/o it you will leave a large amount of wort behind. U dont need much for a pick up tube, a 90* street would work. I had the copper laying around so I used that. Good luck, let me know how it turns out
@bjcpc0337 I have heard the key with SS is to use plenty of lubrication and teak breaks and let the bit cool. You should whirlpool after the boil and during cooling and allow the hot break and hop stuff to settle in the center of the kettle then route the out pickup tube to the side of the vessel. You may still get some but much less than the other ways and it is def easier than a siphon.
Hi I don't know about any brewing at all, I just want to know if this weldless valve work on stock pot ? I mean will the silicon ring stand up to the heat when I cooking the soup spot? thank you !
+Anh Do yes I brought the wort to a boil for around an hour each use. www.midwestsupplies.com/weldless-kettle-conversion-kit-deluxe-stainless-steel-with-no-barb.html. here is a link to a weldless ball valve but you can Google them and find more options.
Nice job...I was looking for a video on this because I'm heading in this direction. Also plan on getting a site glass/thermometer combo from Bobby M to do my HLT. Just spend more money, baby!
I plan on doing this with my brew kettle, but it is stainless...how different is the process? Also, is a pickup tube necessary, or can I just use the valve to drain my wort via gravity into my fermenter? Thanks!
@jturie I am going to do the same I am going to do a video very soon showing some of the items I have been accumulating...I am actually in the process of gathering steel for a brewstand build. A Brutus 10 style system. Single tier 3 vessel with a single pump (for the time being as I am a batch sparger, i'll get a 2nd pump once I start fly sparging) But I am planning to get a lot of video and still shots of the build as we go along and post them here.
@ColoradoFlyFisherMan I felt like that too. I wanted to make sure it was clear and every step even on this simple project was covered. As for the smoke detector, I did change the batteries, but it kept chirping for some reason so I disconnected that one....lol
There arent alot of videos detailing builds (tomroeder has one). I am not planning to automate mine (at least not initially). It will be a manual Brutus 10, although I will probably add a switch for the pump to ease in the on/off of that...
Good video. Getting ready to do this myself and will have my laptop in the garage with your video as my reference manual. Also, is that cornhole board as your work bench?
I guess you can try. I think the step bit is easier, but I cannot say for sure as I have never tried it. I guess if you have a bit that is big enough to punch the hole for the nipple, the go for it.
@Runenaldo it was an estimate based on how I was going to build my pickup tube. I used some copper fittings ands the 90* I was using meant I'd need 1.5-2". Plus putting it that high gives u more surface area and I had a washer on the outside as well
@TheKonaboy65 Thanks! Yeah, the battery on the garage alarm is dead and I have been to lazy to change it...lol But if I film out there i should def change it...thanks for noticing...lol
fuckin smoke alarm had me looking around my house LOL

Great video. I just found out about these weldless ball valves on homebrewtalk today. Enough detail to be informative. Not too much. Thanks!
Nicely done. Looking forward to future vids as you build out your system.

Thanks John... Nice video, I'm going to be doing the same thing with my brew pot. Cheers Paul...
Vegetable Oil works good too and cleans right off with soap and water.

the silicone ring I used here has always held up without any issues. no problem
+john malone did you actually boiling the water on that pot ? could you send me the link where you buy the valve ?

Holy shit Kody, me too!
can you still use dish-washing liquid to drill into stainless steel pot?

Thanks! I was using a friends cornhole board as my work bench on that particular day. More as a table and I didnt drill into it...
Do I HAVE to use a step bit? They're kinda pricy, and I have a full bit set...

@ihikefar Yeah, I plan to add a short thermometer right above, or just to the right of the ball valve...and maybe a sight glass....
@brewmaster0507 Cool, I am in the process of putting a system together, and the videos will keep coming.
@jakecpunut Yea, the next installation I am doing is a site glass/thermometer combo once brewhardware (Bobbyfrom NJ) gets restocked.
nice video thank you. :)
Green Scotch Brite pad and some Bar Keepers Friend will take that stuff off the bottom.
I tried that and it still beeped....so the man in me said screw it and took it out...problem solved as long as my garage doesnt catch fire
