Donyboy, I believe that all Honda’s with these dipsticks are not supposed to be screwed in to check the oil. Just inserted. All of my Honda engines say this information.
Honda generators are premium quality but they do cost more. You get what you pay for. Thanks Dony for that oil tube tip! I will use it on my little Honda inverter.
From the eu2000i User Manual. *Loosen the maintenance cover screw and remove the maintenance cover. Remove the oil filler cap, and wipe with a clean rag. Check the oil level by inserting the dipstick in the oil filler hole without screwing in.*
You are so right about these being better. They do look like the knock offs but they last and last. I would even rather have a used Honda than a new knock off. Good video Don.
On those you’re actually not supposed to screw the dipstick in the dipstick is just supposed to be layed in to check the same as their mowers, dipstick thread depth is probably 5/8” or so and even though dipstick is on an angle you’re not getting a full 5/8” of depth extra but the difference that can make when screwed in can make a big difference if you’re just checking oil routinely and it’s already a bit low. The oil on those models should just drip out or be close to top of the threads, according to Honda.
Pretty nice little trick! I have a Simplicity lawn tractor with a B+S Vanguard V-Twin, and its oil drain has a similar little hose attached from the factory. (Still possible to make a mess if you try to use too big of an oil pan that can't get in there...) On the other hand, my older Snapper snow blower has an almost-uselessly-short little extension pipe on its oil drain. That one is almost guaranteed to be a mess, even if I drag it back to the workshop with the hoist.
Hy, I am 14 years old and we have several briggs engines and some stihl chainsaws and thrimmers and if there is something wrong with it, il fix it. youre a nice youtuber btw and il try to watch al your videos.
I'm surprised you don't use an oil sucker for your small engines. I started using one for my mowers, generators, etc. a few years ago and it has made oil changes mess free. The bonus is not having to deal with those silly crush washers on the Honda drain plugs.
fluid evacuators are ideal for removing fluids from small tanks and reservoirs. These units are lightweight and portable, and include integrated reservoirs. I use mine for all my engines car and trucks and change the filter from above if possible. Oil is cheap so change it often
Great little basic PM oil change video ! I own and agree this model is well worth the extra dollars. I would like to add it would make another good video on this generator showing the other features as shown in the owners manual such as the lights and how they indicate running hours for maintenance, the on,off valve on the gas cap,and how a replacement cap and hose can connect to a 5 gallon or larger tank to allow it to run for days without shutting it down for refueling. It along with the companion model can also run parallel cords for a combined 4000 watts of power with 2 generators if you need more power to run the A.C. and other appliances at the same time. Maybe show proper long term storage prep or as I do, run it at least once a month for 10 minutes with load every month year round to avoid plugging the carb jet from gas with ethanol and it will all ways be ready within a couple of pulls when needed. Thanks for the informative videos.
Great Video. How about a video on preparing for storage. Seems to me there is no fuel shut off if I remember, of course either way I empty the tank. But a little more difficult to do cause if I remember right you can’t tip it to drain gas out or oil will fill up air cleaner. Maybe do it in conjunction with the oil change.
have 1000 honda gen. runs continuous for 3 weeks with suction hose every summer at remote cabin. never an issue. so quiet we sometimes have bears. you pay for quality. when done add stabilizer. will start again next year 2 pulls.
Definitely my mistake on my math, sorry. I had figured 5 gallons a day max full load @ $2.50 a gallon like my eu2000 gets and that would have only been $262.50. Don't know how I came up with that 6oo figure.
Yeah ! The Honda push mowers don't have a drain plug so the oil has to be drained out of the oil dipstick filler tube. The oil level is checked without screwing the dipstick in on them.
I have a new Honda 2200i. Do you recommend any kind of break in procedure? I have the Honda 10w-30, but read I could use synthetic after about 10 hours. I’m in a colder climate (20 F)..... should I use 5w-30? Thanks for any specific information you can provide.
Got same generator , smells like oil when running and only runs with choke wide open , also won't work with Eco mode on, I put in new spark plug , and it's blackened the same day ......wish I could figure out the issue
Hi db73. My mother had a same kind of Honda generator, but for some reason it blew up. It had oil in it and it didn,t run that many hours, so it's very strange. I know that Honda is the ultimate manufactor in gasoline powered generators, so it's difficult understand. Do you think we could sell it for parts, because the generator might still be allright?
I've got one of these.. runs mint and it's 10 years old. A tank of gas lasts about 12 hours.. we let it run all night long at camp to keep the bears away. If it becomes hard to start, set the valves.
Ken Hilson - and probably also half the life. The B&S Powersmart is a little heavier than the Honda and puts out 100W less. The reviews have been so-so whereas the reviews on these little Hondas are 5-star all the way.
Wow I thought you were supposed to seat the cap on the tube instead of screwing it down for all Japanese small engines. 🤔 I guess this one is the exception.
I just bought this model, pulled the dipstick and looked at it.....then looked at the ground just in time to stop the oil puddle from getting larger. I would feel dumb except that its actually a dumb design.
Well, after watching the rest of the video I realized that the oil was overfilled by the previous owner because it shouldn't be spilling out when the generator is level.
i thought I would save some money and buy a Hyundai inverter generator. Big mistake. nothing but headaches. sold it and bought a eu2000i Honda and never looked back
This is another dumb Honda design. Tipping the generator over to drain it instead of a drain plug. Also the combo fuel shutoff / electric kill switch is dumb. Can't run the carb dry that way.
Donyboy, I believe that all Honda’s with these dipsticks are not supposed to be screwed in to check the oil. Just inserted. All of my Honda engines say this information.
You're right. That is exactly what the manual states.
By manual add oil until the oil level is in level with oil fill hole.
On these you fill it up all the way to the top until oil leaks out of the hole. No dipstick needed.
Those are the quietest of any generator I've seen. Looks like they waited a little too too long to change the oil. Great video.

Hey Dony, I have that unit, runs quiet as you said. Great tip on draining the oil. Thanks!

We have two 2200 that we use to boondock on our mountain property. I rotate between the two. Great generator.
Awesome directions made changing my generator oil easy!
Oh man! That looks Like it has never been changed! It was nice to wake up to a new video from Don!
Thanks for the upload!
Great, quick video! I always love the little hints, tricks, and helpful tips to accomplish the task(s) at hand. Great job Don!
Well worth the time to change oil in a honda, the engineering seems sound and reliable.
I've had honda motorbikes, very good engines :-D
Nice tip. I always made a trough out of aluminum foil to direct the oil out of my EU2000. The hose looks like a better idea. Thanks!
Those are great machines, Don, just like all of Honda's yard and garden equipment. Thanks, I love that hose tip, too.
I'm surprised you don't use an oil sucker for your small engines. I started using one for my mowers, generators, etc. a few years ago and it has made oil changes mess free. The bonus is not having to deal with those silly crush washers on the Honda drain plugs.

Man, that was some nasty old oil! I'm surprised that machine didn't sustain any internal damage. Thanks for the video.

Edward Kawecki a
Top tip, thanks Dony 👍

Great video as always Don. I have 2 Honda generators you are correct about they are the best and so reliable. Thanks for this video.
Muchas gracias desde Puerto Rico.
de nada amigo
Thank you sir. The little hose was a good idea. Have to try that. Regards🇦🇺🦘

WOW! That's over $600 at the very least for gas for 3 weeks continuous as you stated.
+Edward Kawecki 100$ 4 liters a day x 21 days.
Definitely my mistake on my math, sorry. I had figured 5 gallons a day max full load @ $2.50 a gallon like my eu2000 gets and that would have only been $262.50. Don't know how I came up with that 6oo figure.
Nice video.
I prefer to use a vacuum oil extraction device. It is a small unit and I can measure the amount of oil removed.
I have a Westinghouse igen2200 that's about half the price and works just as well. Same procedure to change oil too!
ya but is it quiet?
@@cryptoloverscryptoaddicts1483 Yes it is.
Yeah ! The Honda push mowers don't have a drain plug so the oil has to be drained out of the oil dipstick filler tube.
The oil level is checked without screwing the dipstick in on them.
As always a great and informative video. Keep them coming!

Nice tip bro....thanks
Hello Don. I know that I am not at the right place but do you have a tip to share on how to stop this generator to surge.
watch my recent video, u can do the same to the small jet and clean the carb ruclips.net/video/tfWNXsH2CVo/видео.html
Good tip there Dony!!!
The Generator I bought came one with it.
Aren't you supposed to use 10W-30 on this generator?
great tip
What spark plug
Got same generator , smells like oil when running and only runs with choke wide open , also won't work with Eco mode on, I put in new spark plug , and it's blackened the same day ......wish I could figure out the issue
Mine loves royal
Purple
You will pay substantially more for a Honda. Worth it, depends on your situation.
Is Quaker State a favorite oil for small engines?
Hi db73. My mother had a same kind of Honda generator, but for some reason it blew up. It had oil in it and it didn,t run that many hours, so it's very strange. If it becomes hard to start, set the valves.
Looks like Briggs and Stratton version is half the price of Honda

How is Yamaha generator, is it better or worse than Honda?
Fac says 10w 30
But it’s hit here
Wow I thought you were supposed to seat the cap on the tube instead of screwing it down for all Japanese small engines. 🤔
I guess this one is the exception.
Ryan Hare Honda motorcycles with dipsticks are not to be screwed in to check oil level. Unscrew set on top of the threads and read the level
I think we've all been traumatized in our lives from the end-result of an engine having a lack of lubrication. It's part of why we repair.
That's why models like this and others with low oil alert shut down are a definite plus.
Quaker State oil.....Really.....
my generator oil is brown like coffee what do you think, and it wont start
probably has moisture in it, you should replace
I made a mess.....lol
I just bought this model, pulled the dipstick and looked at it.....then looked at the ground just in time to stop the oil puddle from getting larger. I would feel dumb except that its actually a dumb design.

5w-30 ? I thought Hondas were 10w-30 ?
5w30 for winter, 10w30 summer
i thought I would save some money and buy a Hyundai inverter generator. Big mistake. nothing but headaches. sold it and bought a eu2000i Honda and never looked back
absolutely, i tell people to cough up the extra money for the honda
I had no problem with the hyundai
This is another dumb Honda design. Tipping the generator over to drain it instead of a drain plug. Also the combo fuel shutoff / electric kill switch is dumb. Can't run the carb dry that way.
