  • This is the 50th year that Hovertravel have been operating the ferry service across the Solent between Ryde, Isle of Wight and Southsea, Hampshire.
Later this year the first of 2 new hovercraft is expected to be delivered. The second is expected to be delivered in 2016.
Freedom 90 came into service in 1990, whilst Island Express came into service in 2002. Island Express was built around 1984/5 and originally called Freja Viking.
Edit: Amended the build date for Island Express. See also: www.classicfast...

Very good use of a day, have you ever been on one of these hovercrafts?

I'm sitting here at home with a cold beer and a face full of spray! Absolutely superb video, thank you!

+wordy1968 Thank you. I don't think that you would be alone on the seafront either. A lot of people tend to watch the Hovercraft all the time.

+Ken Honeyman Thank you. When you look back the SRN6 was pretty basic but functional. Sadly the two shown in this video will be withdrawn from service soon. I'm sure that they'll be sold off to someone else, but the two replacements are being tested now and should hopefully be delivered soon.

+ScubaGirl68 : Think Freedom 90 (the one with red in its livery) is being donated to the Hovercraft Museum at Lee on the Solent.

+UKWMO I've been looking around and haven't yet seen confirmation of that. The last I heard about the museum was that it had to get rid of the ex-cross channel craft due to unpaid fees.
The new craft will be called Solent Flyer and Island Flyer. They are being tested at the present time.

+ScubaGirl68 : I understand after an online petition and various talks at least one SRN4 will be saved.

It will be sad to see the Freedom 90 and the Island Express leaving but they have served the Isle of Wight - southsea route well ! Pity that the Solent Express is up for sale !

They took longer to leave the slipway and get up to speed, probably due to high tide
