I stand corrected since I filmed this. I have a new video coming, since I have multiple kids now, free time isn't as readily available. There's alot of gear heads that have a soft spot for this car. But if you live in California, Texas, Georgia or Florida, you're guaranteed to get a lot of looks. Those are the areas with the biggest INC presence
Excellent review. I have had my 1996 from new with 40,000 miles and still love to occasionally drive it. I agree with your comments on the car. Just a suggestion about the lack of radio aux inputs. I use a VicTsing V4.1 BT FM transmitter. Plugs neatly into the cigarette lighter and allows streaming BT through the radio. Your radio replacement is a great way to go, but the transmitter is a low cost ($15) alternative. I too am perfectly happy with the existing LT1 with K&N, cat back, Transgo shift kit. I also have installed Hypertech Pro tune, which seems to help quite a bit. I am also intrigued by the 383 swap but it's a lot of work. Any comments on a power adder to the current LT1? Supercharger for example? Thanks.
Yea man the C4 looked awful. I respect the zr1 lotus four cam and some of the tech that went into them but everyone loved the 96 Impala SS. It was everywhere. A classic Muscle Car, it was black and the only thing it had to be faster than was a cop car.
AWESOME car!!! I see that youre from the Akron area. I live just outside of Wadsworth. I currently driving a 17 Charger Scatpack and looking to sell it. I found one of these in MI. Would like to ask you some questions about the SS and what kind of upgrades that are out there.
Great Video and commentary. I agree with your review of the car. I have had my '96 from new and now have 39,000 Florida miles on it. It's in as new condition, the only mods I have made are K&N, cat back, Hypertech Pro, 165F thermostat and shift kit. My wife hates the shift kit because it's "too jerky", which is why I do like it. The problem is that I also have a Jaguar F type V8S which is a beast, and when I step back into my SS, I always feel that I'd like just a bit more power. I have been thinking about the 383 stroker motor too, so your videos will be very helpful. So do you think that you'll have to change out the 4L60E? It seems that a shift kit would help because it is heat, among other things, that transmissions hate. The shift kit allows varying amounts of slippage when shifting gears, so should help to mitigate the higher 383 hp output? Good luck with your project!
Well as far as transmission, I have an upgraded unit from GearStar in Akron here. They redo everything internally, change shift points, etc. The torque converter does a little bit more as far as lockup and things, but overall its a nice upgrade that isn't undrivable or uncomfortable. You can run a deeper pan, which holds more fluid and helps with the heat. You also can upgrade your cooler, which is smart. Im the original owner if a 96 Impala SS and picked up an LT1 with 100k on it. I would like to follow your lead during my rebuild. Where is the best place to find your project videos as your website seems to be down. Thanks in advance,
Hi, I followed your restoration project as you went along back in 2015. Since then, how is the car running? Have you done any other mods? I have been slowly building a 9c1 for some time now and we have emailed in the past. I put too big of a cam in my 383 stroker and cant get a good tune in the car. Recently I have decided to buy the Holley HP EFI ECU. It will replace the opti as well as give so many more tuning options. I just wanted to see what you have been doing with yours. I am also looking for an SS that I can use for a daily driver. I just need the right one. You know how that is. Take care and good luck with your hobbies. Regards, Ody
Well right now, I'm in the process of securing an opti-eliminator setup and going coil pack. From there, I plan to tune. Overall, I think I have a minor issue that needs to be worked out on the dyno. So once that is all installed, a new tune will be done. Thanks for watching! More mods to come are mostly cosmetic, as suspension/trans/etc are all sorted.
I am also going coil pac with the Holley. OBD is just not enough for what I have built. Hopefully, I made the right decision for choosing Holley. What opti-eliminator setup. are you going with? Torqhead? Merry Christmas, Ody
@Rubber city motoring I noticed when you got onto the freeway you had a hard gear shift from first to second. I have the same issue on my 96 impala. Do you have a fix for that?
@@RubberCityMotoring So on your new motor that I saw you install with the torque convertor, do you have the same hard shift? Also mine is only really noticeable when driving down the street and it shifts to second. When at a higher speed/RPM its not as prevalent
ive always found it hard to believe these had 260 like yea maybe to the wheels but not to the crank there is no way. i feel chevy said that because the laws, same with the lt1 camaro and vette they are making more power than what we think. ive drove a 96 ss and a 95 bolt camaro there is no way.

That is exactly what I had here. The sound you hear is a borla with about 100k miles on it. Complete kit, looks nice, not a ton of performance gains but overall nice and clean. Expensive, but solid choice. That car sounds amazing btw!
@Hoagies Garage correct me if im wrong ,but i saw your car on the forum with the front black corner lamps? do you still have them? and if you do , would you sell them?

is that still the LT1? i have a 1996 camaro Z28 which mechanically is about the same except my car is lighter. the caprice/impala sure was a nice ridding car. too bad they dont make real cars too much anymore. except for the mustang, camaro, challenger and corvette RWD cars are pretty much extinct.
+andrew donohue i also have been doing some work to my camaro lately. new engine mounts, new ignition wires, new bushings all around. i did a ton of work last year with new opti-spark, coil, icm, fuel pump, intake gasket. i also drove it 15k miles trouble free. these are old cars but when setup right they run well. the LT1 is an under-rated engine and loves to rev even with the 215K that are on my car. i suspect that engine will go at least another 100K
+andrew donohue I've had a '98 Camaro SS for about 8 years now, but that is the first year for the LS1. Such a rock solid vehicle though, too bad I'm selling it in another month when the weather gets nice :(
why are you selling the camaro? what a fun car with a backseat that is large enough for a car seat. my son rides in my camaro all of the time. that is the first year of the LS1 indeed. good news with that no opti-spark. i bought an LT1 powered car because those are pretty much being given away, i bought my car for $3,000. $3,000 is dirt cheap for any used car given todays prices. when you consider that the car makes 285 hp and 335 tq its a steal. the bad about the LT1 is that the aftermarket is more limited, but it does exist with guys like lyod elliot
+andrew donohue Well the Camaro has been my driver for 100k miles, I've had my fun and now I am moving into the Impala. Great vehicle though that has served me well, just time for a new adventure and also more practicality. The LT1 Impala should be a fun next step in my life, offering me some sentimental value and also practicality with my daughter. I'm pretty excited about getting the project into full speed here for the summer/fall driving season.
I have a 95 LS 400 that gets 260 horsepower stock. I thought that SS had more, I always wanted a 96. One day I'm gonna own one too. That SS Impala is my all time favorite car.

+andrew donohue Yes this came with the LT-1 from the factory. Pulling it out soon for a 383 LT-4 in the coming months...
I thought they came with 295 hp
260hp stock on paper.
@@RubberCityMotoring damn but still I will own one of these someday
For sure. Great cars with lots of potential and room.
I have a 95 LS 400 that gets 260 horsepower stock. I thought that SS had more, I always wanted a 96. One day I'm gonna own one too. That SS Impala is my all time favorite car.
G8s are not great on gas. I have both a g8 and a trailblazer ss. I get about the same mpg.
That’s crazy! I didn’t think they were that bad! My trailblazer averages about 14mpg.
@@RubberCityMotoring yeah I average 14 to 15 in town driving.
I have gotten 30 on the highway though.
I came to see a impala SS and the entire video shows some guy who talks to much .
You won a Dislike!!!
Sorry..
You have a fusion.... you won a dislike
nice car. legend has it he’s still talking to himself.
17 minutes. too much. i’m out.
Thanks for watching…
