The pawn shop NEVER rips anyone off, they make an offer that the seller can except or reject ,they don't put a gun to their heads and force them to take the deal. If you don't like the offer then don't take it,you can't be ripped off cause it was your own choice to except the offer
My bet is, they had a huggggee hunch the coins were stolen and bought them way under price, and did the, "oh dang, we melted them, whoops, here's the $12k for the gold that was in them"; that way they kept the 50k worth of coins, without having the return them, or being charged for possessing stole goods. Like you said, there is no way they melted them, having so much knowledge of coins, they 'pocketed' them.
You’re telling me that Rick wouldn’t have recognized the value in the Uncles Gold Collection, before he melted them? I call BULLSHIT! Obviously the girl seemed shady, so he offered a ridiculously low price, then melted them quick, before the police had the chance to ask for them back! Wise up people!
