I love seeing a tiger on singletrack! I got an 800xc and live in upstate NY, and feel like I'm the only guy on a big middle sized adventure bike taking on the skinny trails.
I ran the 804/805 combo on my loaded down 1200GS for both the NM and WY BDRs. They are a great deal. They are better on the road sections than my previous TKC80s. Both the Skinkos and Contis both wear fast on the pavement though. I thought the Shinkos were killer on the sand, gravel and rocks. My only beef is that the rear 805 tends to wash out sideways on slick mud. My trick was to ride in the mud ruts, so that the rear tire would be constrained and could simply act like a paddle. This wasn’t always possible, so I had several muddy drops.
I have only used TKC 80's on my bike since replacing the OEM tires back in 2012. I have absolutely loved them all these years, but finally this year ended up buying the Shinko 804/805 tires to try. The place I always bought my TKC's from no longer carries the 150/70-17 rear, and the cost of the 170/70-17 is exactly $100.00 more expensive than a Shinko 805! I just can't afford the TKC's anymore.
Earned my subscription. What a fun review -- great job. Also totally validated the tire order I made 20 mintues ago, and that's exactly what i was looking for haha
Great review. I've been using these tires for a while (3 years) and I totally agree with you. I was planning to move away from them, but... I will not!
Great review! This Shinko's gone be my pick for the DR650. Now, for sand and mud i'll go for the Bridgestone Adventurecross AX41 (forget the Str, Anakee, Tkc 80, etc). I have them in my 2010 XT660Z Tenere and after 2000 kms i can say they have great traction in mud (release mud very easy) and sand (due to the large contact patch). In the rain always felt glued to tarmac or rocks. They inspire confidence. I run 21 and 17 wheels in 2.0bar (off-road).
I bought the E804/805 combo for my G310GS, assuming that I'd get 6000 miles out of the original Metzler Tourance tires. I have over 9000 miles on them and they'll probably need to be replaced at 10,000 miles. That's very impressive longevity, and they're good 90% street tires. I definitely want a more off road capable tire but I mostly ride on secondary roads so I'd like to get a lot more off road ability without too much compromise on the road, and it sounds like the Shinko tires are going to be a very good fit for the way I ride my little old man ADV bike. One other aspect in the favor of the Shinko tires for those of us who do our own wrenching, the Shinko tires are reputed to be easier to install.
I just pulled the trigger on an 804/805 set for my 2021 T7. Under $240.00 shipped/taxed on Motosport in May of 2022. They are replacing the stock Pirelli Scorpions which I absolutely hated. I was convinced I was going to put on tires with a "V" or chevron type pattern, ( think Metzeler Karoo 3's) but decided to take a chance on the Shinkos based on the HUGE amount of positive reviews. We'll see.
I ran these on my versys 300 and loved them! Right now my tiger has motoz gps and already got some tkc80s all ready in the shed, after that I’m probably going back to 804/5s
Also I got about 8k on the front tire and actually traded it in the same day I went in to put the new back tire on. Back tire got over 10k miles. But again that’s a bike that never could spin a tire! Lol
I am impressed with these too. Reality is for my riding the 705s would probably suit me even better. But damn these 804/805s just look so damn good on the bike too and you only trade off some longevity to the 705s so this will stay as my tire of choice.
great review!!What size your rear? my Shinko 805 150/70/17 the best, im manage to get 6000km ++ 30% off-road there rest on the asphalt and front still looking good.
You mention Karoo 3s. What did you think about them? They are OEM on my R1250GS and I hate them. I’ve made it to 2000 miles with them and hated every mile. They are coming off next weekend.
I had a Tiger 800xcx in San Diego for years, with 705s and then 805s on it. Great tire, but the rear flattened off early and fishtailed under power. I recognize those trails, crashed plenty of them on the Triumph and lots of other bikes LOL
I am running this combo on my Teneré 700. I agree with what you said about these tires. I am in the PNW. I am relatively new to off pavement out so far so good, with the 804/5. I have just under 1700 miles on them. I am considering getting the Mitas E-07 also. Have you used those tires?
I have not used the Mitas on this one I have riden on them before and they do not seem to flex as much The Mitas seems like a hard tire but users claim very high milage on them
I put an 805 on the stern of my Africa Twin to finish off my Anakee Wild front, after which I planned to get Dunlop Trailmax Missions. Now I'm strongly just considering sticking with that combo - the wild is much more settled on the fron than the 804, and the rear does really well - perhaps a hint more squirrely in the twists than the Anakee Wilds, but close enough...and much more robust than the AW rear.
The 805 is more robust than the anakee wild rear? I thought the 805 wasnt that robust? Which front is more robust out of the anakee wild, tkc80, scorpion rally str?
Would love to hear your opinion on my search for tires on a 125cc scrambler weighing only 150kg wet (plus another 85-100kg with me plus gear). For about 80/20 street/off-road. Not to be used for highways, do want to ride in the rain. Don't want to loose the scrambler look so looking at 50/50 tires instead of the more logical choice of 70/30-ish. Can't decide between AX41, Scorpion Rally STR, TKC80, 804/805. Additional difficulty in the search, not much options in 17" rims, and max rear width is only 120. Stock tires are 100/90-17 & 90/90-17.
Us Goons are always on a budget...haha. I'm running Trailmaxx Mission Tires on my Tiger 800XCA now. Good for off road but maybe I try Shinko next time and save a few dimes. Thnx for the review.
@@BornAGoon Yes the Trailmaxx Mission tires are very good off road too. Plenty of grip but I cannot ride like a goon...Not sure how they would be if I rode my Tiger like you. Cheers!!
just got these for my super tenere was hoping on doing to ne bdr this summer got to do a long highway trip to get there what pressure where you running for long trip and then offroading thanks great vid
I run 32 psi in the front and 30 psi in the rear. If I carry luggae I do 35 front and 32 rear. Enjoy the BDR I do not air down off road I think ADV bikes are too heavy for that
Looks like a great tire. I have to run pavement for many miles though before I hit dirt. If I ran these tires, they'd be bald inside of a few weeks. I need to do a better job of finding dirt on my routes.
How does the high speed cornering performance of the shinko tkc80 and anakee wilds compare to the scorpion rally str? I like to ride aggressive in the twisties and ride gravel and hardpack dirt aswell
I have a new KTM390 Adventure and these tires are going on in days. I've only taken the bike off the pavement 3 times for very short spurts and the Continentals did not create any confidence for me.
I think you can not beat the value plus performance of the Shinko I personally like them better than Kenda big blocks There are other tires that are better like Mitas Pirelli etc but they are twice the cost
No I thought about it but have not done it I'm not sure it will matter that front end is so heavy They changed the rake and trail on the 900 but the 800 sinks
A great tire for most riding, but in the mud it has to be. One of the worst. On my last ride I hit about 300 yards of mud patches about 2 to 3 inches deep. I rarely drop my bike but on this ride and this patch the bike front and rear was sliding out continuously and I must have payed down the bike about ten time in those 300 yards. In the future I will surely be avoiding any long stretch of mud.
for regular tires the Shinko 804/805 or Bridgestone AX41 If you want to mix you can use either fronts I listed with TKC 80 rear or TKC 80 front with the above rears. If you want to spend more on the rear the best rear tire for performance and longevity it the Mitas E07 but it is pricey
I put some on and hate them. Front has no grip. Rear is like a sand paddle. Motoz Rallz is the route I went and is in my opinion is a FAR superior tire.

This is the best review I've seen of this combo. Hats off. You nailed it!

I’ve very interested in these tires. My question is are they tubeless. My 2017 ktm 1290R runs tubeless tires
Planning to put it on a Himalayan. Im running 500kms every week on road. And off road every weekend. Do you still recommend this tire for me?
Yes I do it’s the best value for performance out there

Do a comparison with shinkos vs motoz rallz tractionator or adventure dual sport tractionator. Where in Cali do you ride? I'm kinda new to dual sports

They are made for tubeless. Are they safe mounted on a tubed rims with tubes in it?
Yes they have been safe
Have you tried wider tires in the front for sand?
No I thought about it but have not done it I'm not sure it will matter that front end is so heavy They changed the rake and trail on the 900 but the 800 sinks
Which is worse in sand, the Tiger or Multi 1200 Enduro?
My Tiger 800 is awful in the sand but I havent riden a Multi 1200
Hi does it matter if you use e805 in front?
no it doesnt That is good
The best corsa platinum cross s
Best bang for buck!
You try the Dunlop Trail max yet?
No not yet I hope to soon

Worst place for a tiger It is so front end heavy its like a plow
