Hi, Petrik! I like this type of video! I enjoy seeing how other readers manage their books. I have a large library too- about 2,000 books- and I'm ALWAYS either adding to or subtracting from my collection. I have a permanent place where I keep books which I plan to sell. I'm just like you in this: if I get a nicer edition, then I unhaul the older edition, or if I read a book and don't love it- into the Sale Pile it goes! Also, overtime my tastes change, and then a whole subgenre or style of writing will end up in the Sale Pile. I think most serious life-long readers will have a library which is constantly in flux. And I think that's a good thing!
Libraries do this regularly - it's called "weeding". There's only a certain amount of physical space, so it's necessary in order to make space for new books.
I totally feel you! I also struggle with getting rid of books. And yesterday I got the tip to just put all the books you want to unhaul into a separate stack and let them sit there for a while until you feel ready to let go. I did this and within 10 minutes I felt ready set up an eBay account to sell 40+ books😂 Maybe this can help you too!
Just don't faff about like me and have the books in boxes for weeks/months, because you know what'll happen... 😂😅 Yup, I ended up digging through my unhaul boxes like it was Christmas morning and putting lots back on my shelves! 😂 Sigh, I have such guilt when I unhaul but I need to be more ruthless (and get rid of them immediately lol)
It makes me smile to know that you too form emotional attachments to books. It IS hard to part with the ones I unhaul even when I know they are going out into the world like literature seeds.
I’ve often wondered about your duplicate copies, many of which can be seen in your fabulous background. But I *do* like seeing an unhaul when I get to hear your thinking. The *why* of the unhaul is at least as important as the books themselves. Same goes for hauling in the first place - what tipped you over the edge. I love hearing the thought process behind a decision, whatever it is a decision regarding. So more coverage for this viewer, please 🙏
NO. Don't stop the unhaul videos. I personally love them; I think by now we're all very much invested in what goes on in your library and unhauls are a big part of it. Where are you taking the books? Do you have bilingual libraries in Jakarta? Unhauls to me have been, for the most part, satisfying, just because I proved to myself that I'm not a hoarder and I'm capable of parting ways with books to avoid clutter. Turned out that a lot of that was bullshit because I found books I unhauled in library sales and bought them back :/ Your library is beautiful and you have a great love for it, as sad as it is, it's necessary that you do this because the moment you start haphazardly piling them up in corners and other places, your library will stop being your little paradise at home. I know because I got to that stage where I had piles everywhere and it wasn't fun anymore to sit in my library to read. I reached the staggering number of 15 boxes of books unhauled and donated to the library. It can get really bad. XD Stay strong, little brother.
I will proobably post an unhaul video once in a while! And I will try to sell the books cheaply in my city and country. As I said, though... it won't be easy to do that. There are no bilingual libraries here, otherwise I'll donate my books there. You're right, though, that unhauling is necessary. Especially with how many books I have at home now. 🥲
Look on the bright side man! It's only a few books, and you're replacing most with more durable editions better suited for the climate. I had the same issues with the tropical atmosphere damaging MMPBs in Guyana, I also had the added problem of mylar wrapping most of them - the heat on the plastic eventually caused a lot of the covers to warp and in some cases tear. Two, three reads and they're in pieces. I ended up doing a massive unhaul - by leaving 90% of them behind and migrating to another country 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you so much! Oh my god. This is why I was afraid of putting mylar wrapping on my books. I feel like they end up damaging my books instead of protecting them thanks to the weather and humidity. :/
@@PetrikLeo In that tropical climate, definitely. If your home will be relatively cool, or you're using it with hardcovers, they're safe - I have friends back home who it wasn't an issue for under those situations. But in my loft and on those soft US MMPB covers? Within two, three years the mylar shrunk in some cases and the MMPBs weren't sturdy enough.
I am curious about how do you unhaul? Sell or gift to library? Are there this public bookcase were everyone can put a book and take other? It really works. Yes you bassicly gift them. I know the pain you are talking about. I can't even swap books for new edition😮💨 It's like the content is the same why buy a new edition and alsobit is nostalgic. Rereading is not my thing but I know my books. 🤔 well there is this one that I know was funny! but no way what it is about... a good candidate for reread 😅
It's definitely difficult here. There's no option to sell it to a library. The best choices would be to shout it out on social media and hope some readers where I live would like to purchase the books from me (at a much cheaper price, of course) or get them for free.
I was wanting to ask you how you handle the damage high humidity/harsh sun does to books! I'm in New Zealand, and where I live we have high humidity in Summer and damp Winters and I have to work extra hard to keep my books 'healthy' as they yellow and Fox very quickly :-( Good unhaul, Petrik! I try to unhaul often, but it's sooooo hard and I get a massive guilt-trip every time!
Thank you so much! I don't have much of an advice except to make sure the room where you put your books have the AC conditioner on often. It will increase your electricity bill, but so far, this AND slipcase/boxset are the best methods to prevent my books from being damaged or yellowed.
@@PetrikLeo Thanks! I don't have an air-con, we mostly do 'windows open' for breeze down here, but I do want to get a heat pump in there for Winter time, and with a dehumidifier for condensation as well, think that will help! 😊 Hope you can sell or donate your books! I usually end up donating mine to Hospice.
Ah, it's so tough to do. At least they are paperbacks, and duplicates. I usually have my copies in both hard and softcover, if issued that way. Paper for reading. Once done I try , oh do hard to let go even though I have both copies, LOL. That is why I have 7-8K books. You mention that most in your country are not fantasy readers, what genre is most popular there?
@@PetrikLeo I'm in a fairly large house. Have two separate libraries, in fact that small icon pic on my discord is one of them. Half are probably boxed.

So after counting them, I have "only" 72 books at home for now. Before 2023 that number was 9...so maybe in a few years if I even live at my current place. What is your estimated number of books at home?
Enjoy it while you can! That moment when you have space for books is so freeing. It's like you can buy any books without worrying where to put them. 😅 I have more than 1000 books now. It's getting too chaotic.

It's kind of crazy to me thinking about the concept of "unhauling". I'm just getting back into books and my collection is sad. I've got a lot of catching up to do! Hoping that one day I'll be at the point of doing my own unhaul-not specifically to get rid of books, but because I'll be at the point of owning so many I don't have any more space! 😊
It's only a matter of time, Andrew. Your collection will look amazing soon!! And then like me, you will struggle organizing the books in your library. :D
There's a bright side to saying goodbye to books, which is that hopefully someone new will find them and fall in love with the same stories!
