If you watch Adam Savage hes been using industrial version of this for years. He also teaches you how to make your own badass one. Much bigger and legit. Vacuformers. But this is awesome too!
I’ve never had a good experience with that kind of material and resin. The resin’s heat melt it changing the shape of the piece, in my experience. I guess a 3D printer and silicone would be the best choice for making moldes. You can design whatever it’s in your imagination and bring them to life 😀 and make awesome pieces! Have a great week! 🙋🏻♂️
Girl don't feel bad IM SO HAPPY THERE IS ANOTHER PERSON LIKE YOU WHO IS HONEST WITH THEIR REVIEWS! ☺☺ I've actually been interested in getting one because I use a lot of UV resin and I was looking for an alternative to making molds at home, in the end I think ill stick with liquid silicone BUT it would have been so cool if this had been more convenient! Keep making your videos, they are amazing, you are amazing, keep going!
Watching this a bit late. Don't ever apologize for giving us your honest opinion. It looks like you gave every effort to make it work for resin, which is what we watch you for! We super appreciate you being able to spend the money to try it, as many of us can't purchase that high of a ticket item to have it not really work. LOVE YOU!
UPDATED COMMENT since I watched your video all the way through. We use these in the dental office to make whitening trays and mouth guards and you can get different gauges of material that will produce more detail. Mold release can be really helpful, also when the plastic is heated, depending on the brand it will let off gasses that may be inhibiting the cure of the resin, which may mean that you will need to wash the mold after it cools with soap and water, and then dry the mold as you know water and resin do not mix lol. ALSO check out The Crafsman as HE JUST posted a video a few days ago about a different brand of vacuum former that has a much larger surface area, he addressed a lot of troubleshooting issues, with creasing and detail capture. Go check it out and you may be able to find his machine that he uses. I believe the machine he was uses has different gauges of plastic that are thicker or thinner depending on your needs. Also, letting it sag more or less with allow it to be thinner or thicker that may help with detail. I always let mine sag quite a bit for whitening trays as it captures a lot more anatomy detail and fits better. That combined with mold release will allow you to reuse the molds. I HOPE THAT HELPS!!
I agree totally! I used this also when I made bleach trays. She needs different plastic sheets. She is using the hard plastic which could be useful as a negative.
I was going to say the same thing! I wonder if you could use a mouth guard material? Idk much about the plastics but I think there are vacuumed formed silicone molds for resin. Maybe just a different sheet of material?
Thank you SOOOOOOOO much!! I have been eyeing this for a couple weeks since I got the email from Joanns. This will not work for me. I super appreciate you reviewing this!!
That looks like chocolate mold plastic. Resin molds take a different plastic. It’s more milky white not clear. You can order the right plastic sheets though. I have a ton of those type of molds. The chocolate molds always break though cause they aren’t compatible with resin.
We just started selling these at my job (Joanns) too! I've been super curious about them I'm glad you're trying them out so I can see what they do 💜💜💜 Edit after I watched the whole vid: Watch Evan & Katelyn's video on a vacuum former. I think they used a different one and it seemed to work for resin. Also, I very much appreciate your honest opinion on this product. I love your outlook on the waste aspect too. That was something I wasnt thinking about immediately
It’s great that you had such enthusiasm about this product, and I was sorry to see your disappointment at the end. In the instructions it says to use mold release with resin. You’re also supposed to use a clay to build out the bottom of the pieces you’re molding to prevent difficulties removing items from the mold (the top edge can’t be wider than the bottom that rests on the vacuum grill. You also melt the plastic to different depths depending on the height of the item being cast. Others have had success cutting a cardboard/mat board/fun foam slightly larger tan the item to make a small platform makes a big difference on smaller objects.
The way the pieces cured with the casting resin is how all of my pieces cure with Counter Culture DIY casting resin! Literally everything - I've made bookmarks, coasters, decor pieces, etc. and they've all cured very soft. I never understood how it worked so well for you, but has never worked well for me! I'm going to try the hard casting resin, but I still have so much of the casting resin.
It may be new to the craft world but this has been used for years in the dental industry to make retainers and bleaching trays. It works best if there's not an undercut in the item and it has a flat base so it doesn't move around.
Thanks for showing us what this machine can do, and what it can't do. I love it that we get to see the process and then get an honest review of the product. This sounds like a clever machine but not really ready to sell. Maybe they will eventually come out with reusable plastic. And, hopefully, plastic that gives a perfect rendition of the object being molded. Carry on!
There’s a product called mold release. It’s just a spray or a waxy rub on stuff, and that’s what is used to make the vacuum formed molds reusable. Smooth-On makes some. It’s also commonly used when making river tables to keep it from adhering to the large molds, which I think are usually melamine? Anywho, I don’t know how long they would last since they’re thin, but mold release should get you more than one use out of them.
I’m a hygienist and we use these in the dentist office to make whitening trays and retainers...🤔 I wonder if the dental plastic would work better? Its more flexible, we don’t need to pry peoples teeth out or use tooth release😁 I wonder if I’ll get a spanking for using expensive dental machines for my artistic endeavors? Heather, thanks for experimenting for us, I have my mission for next week!! I’ll let you know😉
Just watched. I have one of these. They sell them on HSN where I purchased it from, they also sell a mold release that you are to use if you want to use resin.
Hi I've just ordered this machine but then I watched this video and kind of regret it now but its to late to cancel the order. If its no trouble would please be able to let me know how you are getting on with yours? Many thanks 👍
Hi Heather, love watching your channel! I have been using an item called Composimold, which can be reused. When I get bored of the mold, I just throw it in the microwave and make something else. My boyfriend prints me 3d fish, turtles, and geckos (oh my) for me to mold. So much fun and no waste!
Alexander chappple."using a vacume to make coaster molds".he uses a diffrent material for his molds but he used a air gun to get his mold out of the plastic.
This specific vacuum former looks like it uses a different type of plastic sheet than the what we usually see for plastic resin molds. That could be a really key thing. This seems better for little soaps or chocolate maybe? It's a small, simple, Michael's beginner level former. I def agree with watching Evan & Katelyn's vacuum press video! I think it's called "making potato gems."
I havent finished watching yet. I am to where you are pouring resin but just an FYI alot of times with these kind of molds you can spray the molds with mold release solution and that will help pop them out. I use it all the time with soap molds made from the same type of material

Ok i found this a couple of weeks ago but what is the largest you can make on this? I'm trying tio make a pretty large mold and I'm to figure out how to do it without ruining my piece...maybe you can help..I'll get back when I'm a little more prepared..Good Luck !!!
We used like an industrial version in dental hygiene school to make night guards and whitening trays and you kind of had to slam the heated material down onto the object (in my case, a mouth mold) to get it to be super tight...maybe it would work better if you popped it on faster? Oh, nevermind! Looks like it's not meant to be for resin anyway...I hope you can return this machine!

❣❣❣Does anyone know if there is liquid silicone to make CLEAR molds? I have the liquid silicone that is blue and I really want clear kind for UV resin. If anyone has one their would recommend that they have used and love please share!!! ❤❤❤
Thank you for this! Also, could you make a video demonstrating the same 2 pieces but one of them you use a heat gun and the other one you don't so we see the diff? Btw, had my first big mold and resin fail today and I'm still sad about it. Love your videos!!! You have warned me about what I did and I still did it and failed so hard. 🤣🤣
Lol how funny. Mattel made a vacuum form press, called vacuumform when I was a kid. It was great and worked well. Now all these years later they’re charging big bucks for them. Nothing new under the sun. Everything comes back around.
Another issue is that any rigid mold material limits you to only making molds where the top of the mold is the widest part of the item you’ve used makes it so restrictive..you couldn’t do many of the items you can do with silicon like a sphere or a little toy or something that goes in and out in different areas ...does that make sense ? ...lol if I bought it I would be very unhappy with it considering they stated for resin use ..
I haven't tried the machine but I have found that with WeR Memory Keepers products... I really like them for their paper crafting products, but their machines are not good. I’d use it for other crafts. I kind of knew it wouldn’t be ideal for resin I tried using plastic candy molds before. I ended up leaving the mold on the front and sanding the edges to the back, lol.

thank you for showing this machine. I have tired plastic molds and they don’t work for. Great video!

Vacuum form machines have been around for ages. The heating element seems inadequate, but the price isn't bad for the size.

I used a proper vacuum former in school.. but its 3 times the size of that lol stronger suction and a lot easier to use
There is a spray you can get that helps resin not stick to plastic. I've seen it used before.

Me too! Until I saw a miniature artist doing something I’ve never seen before. That was maybe a month ago? Guest it’s becoming more common now
I used to be a dental assistant and they actually use something much like this for dentistry, mostly whitening trays
Maybe using the heat gun to pop the bubbles melted the plastic a little more and made it stick extra to the resin.
Joann Fabrics has it too
I feel like these would be better for making silicone positives than resin pieces
I wonder if you would be able to make a mold of the crystal standing up? Instead of laying down
Did you use a mold release? That would have help you to get it out and then be able to reuse it

If items are small why not put 2/3 items in the same mold. Definitely use mold release.

I think the silicone oils would work well as a mold release.
I would venture to say you would need a strong vacuum cleaner for this.
