    Great video! That looks like it's doing better than my blower. I could change up, and go that route, using my other blower to make it forced air.

      I always advise the safety sissys to use Rubber knitting Needles. Not everyone is the the tough wreckless kind like our grandmothers. Some people don't want to take the kind of life threatening risks they have so that is why the zealots always wear gloves and a face shield as well as long sleeves and steel capped boots while knitting.

      Oil Burner I am quite careful to only use plastic forks and knives. However I did nearly gag on a spoon once, so I no longer use them. It makes eating soup kind of a bitch and it takes forever to eat it with a fork. I tried a straw once, but missed a small piece of that horrible sulifan wrapper and went through hell passing it, so I am stuck with a plastic fork. I just hate all these things we have to be so damned careful of!!

    Hey Oil Burner, chatted with you a few times before. Love the vids. So I'm considering getting a bounce house blower around 480 watts to power my burners. I'd like to know if you thought 480 watts (a bit under 1/2 HP) was going to be enough to get things cooking well? Your blower seems to be upwards of 1HP, I'd guess; but that's probably more than we truly need ...maybe I'm wrong? -I'll be curious to hear your thoughts on the matter.

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  9 лет назад

      +Christopher Moore (CreatingMoore) The 480W blowers are the mid size of the type and more than adequate for any practical application of the burners. For a furnace or a water heater, you'll be wanting to restrict the airflow rather than looking for more. A 480W blower will easily support 300KW of heat output and I can't think of any application that would want that let alone more. To put it in perspective, I have a swimming pool heater that came from an aquatic centre and heated the full size Olympic pool.
      It is rated at 200Kw. The biggest home furnace I have ever read of used less than 70 Kw and the guy was melting cast iron with that. :0)

      +Oil Burner I'm using this for foundry work. I think you're going to love my new video I'll try to post it to youtube tonight. It's a hybrid of some stuff you inspired me with (300KW / 600KW) burners to melt large nasty objects and stuff I have been doing for years with regular foundry work in crucibles. Add a bit of creativity into the mix and I have a really cool idea that I'm excited to unveil. I think it will be a smash hit with guys like us for MANY reasons. You'll see what I mean and all the possibilities will boggle your mind. I'm actually excited to see further improvements on my idea since this is nothing more than a rough prototype. -The Mark 1 version if you will...
      Right now I'm using a little R/C ducted fan DC motor. They use these things on RC Jets and they scream. This has worked well for me over the past 2 months but I have not done a LOT of runs with it. I'm afraid it will die as soon as I try to push it hard and do many hours of melting. Hence why I'm looking for a better (continuous run-time) blower like the bounce house blowers. The cool part of this blower I have now though, is full control of the range. It's a brushless DC motor so it's built to vary speed constantly. The AC blowers can be varied with a pulse modulator, but it's a bit twitchy and often it will cause the motors to surge and change speed without me touching things. -That part, no one likes! So anyway yes I do need higher output and I'm thinking 300KW will be plenty for all that I want to do. You have confirmed what I was hoping to find so thank you.
      Let me know what you think of my video when it's posted ...hopefully tonight. I think you'll love it.

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  9 лет назад

      Christopher Moore
      I look forward to seeing this! I have been thinking of an RC Ducted fan motor because they have pretty high pressure outputs up to about 1 Lb which is good for a fan.
      I don't know about the run time but it can't be too bad if they use them in the planes.
      I bought a PW controller and didn't like the way they made the motor sound. For regulation I use the very Hitech system of a bit of cardboard over the intake moved about to give the airflow I want. People crap on about this overheating the motor but it is a load of bull. I tested the motors and they use LESS current this way so clearly are not going to overheat and haven't in practice.
      If you are shooting for 300Kw you are going to have to pay attention to oil flow. I recommend going to a 1/2" fuel line and putting 2 Lb+ on a bottom outlet oil tank, more pressure if you have a tank that will take it. 300KW is 500ml min so a decent flow to keep up with on oil.
      A 1/2" gate valve will do for regulation as you just need to control it a bit at start up and it will run nearly wide open flat out. You can also control the tank pressure for the output but by having the tank pressurised you don't have to worry about falling fuel levels.
      You can use a pump as well but I haven't come across anything economical that will do the output.

    You say you use a "drip system", so I assume you have a gravity feed (a drum or bucket higher than the outlet). How big is your tube and what sort of flow rate do you allow to run say with this blower fan, acknowledging that you "adjust accordingly" and are observing from a bunker. I also realize it probably varies on the thickness of the oil and temperature. Just trying to work out a parts list.

    Do you find funneling the air supply from 3 inch to 1 1/2 inch to be more effective with a gradual long reduction instead of a short direct adapter? I converted a rocket stove to run off oil but I'm still getting smoke. It could be a number of reasons, from possibly, the burn chamber is running too cool, not enough air flow, really dirty oil, or my 2nd stage heat exchanger isn't allowing proper air flow. But thanks for your quick reply to an old post!

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  4 года назад

      The BIGGEST factor is the PRESSURE the blower is capeable of doing rather than the volume. A fan will move a lot of air but has no pressure to push said air down pipes. A blower generally has more pressure and will work better through tubes etc. If the pressure is low the duct has to be large to accomodate. Think of compressed air, you can get a good airflow through a tiny pipe.
      Running too cool can be not enough airflow to fan the fire up enough to get the required retained heat or it can be too much airflow( not enough fuel) and over cooling the fuel or the burn chamber. Dirty oil makes no difference, Wet oil if you are using veg particularly is a problem and can take away a lot of energy.
      If you have a HE in the exhaust gasses it will carbon up REAL quick if the fire isn't hot and clean. Check that isn't affecting airflow because if it can't get out, it won't go in and, the outlet need to be larger than the inlet generally because the hot gasses will have expanded the air going in and need more flow to get out.
      With my burners I always have the outlet now larger than the inlet by design for this reason. Saves back pressure on the blower and allows for better airflow. More air will burn more fuel gives more heat at full tilt.

    • @user-zx7tg4ph5r
      @user-zx7tg4ph5r 4 года назад

      @@glumpy10 Thank you again for the quick reply. Yes I think my burner has a few problems, like the first one is my exhaust pipe is 4 inches and my intake chamber is 6 inches. The unit seems to work really well when I get the oil flow adjusted correctly. Right now I'm using a shut off ball valve and a needle valve to control the flow. I've filtered the oil using a sponge mat but I think the needle valve is still problematic when being gravity fed so, I'm converting to open drip feed into a funnel. I think I will try your squirrel cage funnel burn and see if that gives me a cleaner burn with a voltage limiter to adjust the air flow. Thanks again mate! Cheers!

    hahahahahahaha Dave your getting cautious in your old age, only 5 miles away lol ;-) Another brilliant episode. Whats the oil consumption using that blower, any difference to the car 12v blower?

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  10 лет назад +2

      Didn't measure consumption Dave. Didn't think of it. The Bilge blower is definitely less powerful than the car blower though.
      That said, I think it really needs at least 2.5" pipe into the burner so it doesn't restrict it and gives it proper airflow.

    OB, how long do you think you get out of the round metal plate at the outlet of the blower pipe? I think you have shown us before what you made another one of, but my memory is a mess from reading too many of those SAFETY TIPS and RULES all my life!
    Toward the end when you have it turned way down, it looks like about what I need for my pool heater project. Sure wish I could find the time and weather to get back on that!!

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  10 лет назад +2

      Steve 1961P. The metal plate is kept cool by the incoming airstream. Mine certainly shows no signs of deterioration and I don't think it ever would. I expect it would last a very long time but you could also use a bit of stainless and that would guarantee it would be the most resilient part of the whole burner. The pool heater is a priority goal for me atm as well. Only been going to get a Round Tuit for about 10 years so I think it's due.

    So i got this blower, and made a burner with a delvan adapter and a 0.75gph adapter. Got the problem the damn thing wont burn properly as it is and adding the blower just kills it right out. =)
    using a 74mm pipe for burner tube. - so guessing it can be to large as well.

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  9 лет назад

      Moronicsmurf So if the nozzle won't work on it's own its clearly not the blower you need to be looking at. Sorry, can't help you with nozzle setups, I don't use them. The simple drip systems I use are virtually no cost, very simple, only need a blower to work, are easy to fire up and run and produce all the heat you want. Nearly everyone I read of that has used a Nozzle, particularly the siphon kind, has problems with them. You would think if you spend $50+ on something it would work and work easily but that doesn't seem to be the case at all.
      Have a look at my other vids for how to build a simple and cheap burner that will fire up easily and trouble free.

    • @Moronicsmurf
      @Moronicsmurf 9 лет назад

      yeah i have to agree with you. I got it to work today. And the main thing was that it cant burn in the "free air" so i needed to direct the flame into a container, its reaaaally sensitive to sidewind. When i then put the fan into it just split the flame up made it wider. So i think im gonna do a second burner more your tradition. Just need to find a suitable vessel for that.

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  9 лет назад

      Moronicsmurf
      What do you want the burner to do?
      The application will help dictate the setup and the vessel you use. Old Gas bottles and fire extinguishers are good but there are other things you can use depending on how you want to put the heat to work.

    for comparison, what are the cfm of your 'regular' AC blowers?
    Is there a relation of gpm of oil and needed blower CFM?
    or is one of the just "as much as you can get"?
    thanks

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  9 лет назад +1

      +Yves Baggi Hi Yves, Unfortunately none of my other blowers are marked with their CFM and I have no way to measure them. The big silver blower is by far the most powerful and has a half HP motor. The big Jumping castle blower has a 1 Hp motor but is not as powerful air wise. I think that's because the silver AC blower has a proper Curved blade Turbine like impeller where as the jumping castle blowers are just cheap pressed straight-bent blades and no where near as efficient.
      There is definitely a ration of air to fuel. I don't know what that is in figurative terms, but there is definitely an air to fuel ratio that needs to be worked in. It's a fairly broad ratio but definable too little or too much air causes problems. Too little is smoke and a lazy fire, too much and the burner over cools, blows white smoke and will go out.
      That said, you can get a fairly broad output on the same air input by adjusting fuel and I have shown this on several vids but for best results, you need to " Tune" the air and fuel together. It's not touchy, but you can tell when you are in the right area.

      +Oil Burner I have this squirrel cage blower used for blowing up matresses and stuff, lots of cfm!
      it says 30 minutes max conescutive operating time, safety sissy or a real hazard for the motor?

      Well I certainly wouldn't dismiss it out of hand. there is probably a tolerance in there but no doubt the thing could get hot with sustained use. Usually motors have a heat rise rating that should not be exceeded. If you are in a cold climate where there is snow, you'd obviously get a lot more run time and may be able to go indefinitely than what you would if you are where I am in summer and it's 40C. Most motors I have seen have a heat rise of about 80C so it wouldn't take much to exceed that with summer temps where I am but may never get close in an environment where it's snowing.
      I'd also guess that the fan has an efficiency curve. That would be how loaded the motor is at different airflow's and back pressures.
      i'd suggest run the thing and keep a close eye on it the first few times and see how you go. If it gets too hot shut it down and if it stays cool that you can keep your hand on it than you know it's OK.
      I have seen a lot of car vent blowers that actually duct a small tube carrying the pressurised air back to the brushes and armature in the motor to keep it cool in the critical areas.

      Oil Burner Thank you.
      I am thinking about buying a motor, untill then we are using the 30max motor.
      What would you recommend?
      We run charcoal and in the future waste oil, so something controlable would be nice.
      I heard that controlling the intake is bad for the motor due to less air for cooling?

    What do you think about using Compressed air vs a Blower?

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  4 года назад

      -I- think compressed air is a waste of energy, resources and money. Blowers are cheaper, quieter, supply more air and use less power. A blower can make far more heat power than a compressed air setup and if done right can be just as controllable.

      @@glumpy10 Good to know! Have you burned 100% synthetic oil? Any drawbacks to that? What about Mixed Oil, a cocktail of many weights synthetic and organic ... is the flame unpredictable or does it all blend well once the burner heats up and gets going?

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  4 года назад

      @@KarasCyborg I have not burned any Synthetic that I know Of. My main fuel is veg oil. I have burned mixed oil from large drums and it all burns the same. Engine oil, Gearbox oil, transmission oil. As long as it's mineral oil, ( which Synthetic is, only the additives are Synth). it all blends. I have used Veg oil with engine oil and have read it will separate over time but just needs a stir/ shake to blend it again. I have had no trouble myself. Little bit of Diesel helps everything blend together.

      Copper tube has little surface area and is hard to direct the heat at efficiently. See if you can get an old gas spa heater or even a gas hot water system and replace the burner with an oil fired one.

      I have found a viable low (1Lb) pressure blower for a motor jet but I'd like to find something with a Higher pressure.
      Spose for a rocket I could always mix some oil with LOX. Anything becomes rocket fuel with LOX! :0)

Thing used a stupid amount of power and this guy was trying to build in a n over the top amount of generation and batteries into his camper to run the thing.
