    The Canon AV-1 was the A-series aperture-priority model and the simplest of the A cameras. The AV-1 is a capable entry-level camera with the features many photographers need. The interface is simple, functions easy to learn, and those combine to make this a great option for first or simple-use SLRs. The AV-1 arose out of a need in the U.S. market for an aperture-priority camera to compete with the Pentax ME and Olympus OM10. Though the AV-1 seems like a stripped-down camera, it can be used just as fully and creatively as any SLR of the same vintage.

    This camera is the first SLR I purchased when I went into the Navy in 1980. I used it for years and took some fantastic photos with it. (I photographed my GF in lingerie but unfortunately I used too slow a SS and she became a ghost on the prints!) It was stolen in 1996 and shortly thereafter I purchased a Pentax K1000 with a Tokina 28-200 lens and a Vivitar 283 flash to begin learning the basics of photograhy. Last week I found an AV-1 in mint condition on E-bay and bought it for about $200. I haven't shot film in years and never expected to again, but here we go full-circle in 2024! Thanks for the review!

    Great thing about the Canon AV-1 is that the battery door don't break as easily as the AE-1's fragile door. The infamous Canon mirror cough also seem to not affect the AV-1 as commonly as other A series bodies probably due reduced complexity. With the simpler design, the weight of the AV-1 is noticeably lighter too.

      Excellent points. I should have mentioned the battery door. it's definitely the nicest in the A lineup.

      And 1 one my AV-1 has a broken battery door. I do not have another "A" series Canon with a broken battery door. Except of course, my AL-1s.

    Spent my first afternoon shooting with this camera and it was wonderful - simplicity itself. The manual was excellent and I spent a couple of hours the night before reading it thoroughly which meant no surprised shooting the shoot. I am so excited to get my first bunch of prints back and intend to process the film (b&w) myself once lockdown allows!

    Thank you so much for doing two videos on this camera. There are so few. And you did great explain it for a novice shutterbug. Quick question: What does a 'S' mean on the frame count window?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you!
      S means start. So you frame counter will reset to that when you open the film back. Then you'll advance your leader (one loaded) to "1". The 1 indicates you've moved past the film leader that was ruined by light and to a good part of the film for recording images.

    I am an absolute amateur. Havent played with a film camera for about 15 years, and that was with disposables. Would this make a decent "starter" camera for someone like me who is toying with the idea of photography as a hobby, but is more comfortable with the "point and shoot" method? If I enjoy it, I suspect I would like a model with more control, but I think that would be more of a hindrance for my experience level. Saw one of these in near mint condition for a pretty good price, just wondering if it is worth it for someone like me.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  7 месяцев назад

      This would be a good starter option, yes, assuming you're comfortable with manual focus. The automatic exposure mode is probably going to be easy for you to learn.

  • @okaro6595
    @okaro6595 2 месяца назад

    NO the viewfinder magnification is not compared to the film but to the real world and it is always measured with a 50 mm lens (even on APS-C sized digital cameras)

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  2 месяца назад

      Sort of yes. The SLR viewfinder enlargement ratio is based on a percentage versus what the human eye would see. Different camera makers measure that different ways -- Canon measured versus a 50mm lens, Pentax vs. a 58mm lens through at least the Spotmatics and maybe the K series, for instance. There was some flex in that and focal length does affect the way that number is calculated. Yes, with this the magnification rate is versus what's seen with the naked eye, and with a 50mm lens what the naked eye sees is roughly the same as what the film will see. So saying that the magnification rate is representative of a reduction to the film is still accurate in terms of understanding what the metric means because it is a reduction of what's in the viewfinder versus the naked eye. And if the naked eye sees what the film sees with a 50mm lens, well, the conceptual explanation in these videos still holds.

    Might be a bit stupid - but how do you turn off the camera? Would like to be sure it's not using the battery when i am not using it.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  4 года назад

      There's no off switch on these. I don't think they drain the battery significantly when not in use. There may be some static discharge, but there's no quartz timer or LCD that stays on all the time with these, as is the case with newer camera models.

    Dear sir ..
    if I have a Nikon FG20 and a Nikon Fe, what is the third Nikon camera that you recommend for me like (Fm or Fm2 or Fe2 .....), in terms of accepting all lenses such as Ai-s ais and nikkor s auto and non ai-s and DC lenses.
    There will also be a diversity between electronic and mechanical cameras.
    and the same thing on canon camera، Note that I have a Canon AV1 now.
    Thanks

    • @DavidHancock

      Do you have a good battery in it? The shutter won't fire without a battery and the lever won't advance without the shutter firing. If yes, have you shot through an entire roll of film and not rewound it? It neither of those is the solution, let me know.

      @@dubtofukstep713 Hmm. That could be an issue. There could be an electronics fault with the camera if the battery is fresh and it's not working in "A" mode. Thank you

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  3 года назад +2

      No it won't with this camera. Basically you're going for whether this camera can work in program mode, with the aperture and shutter speed selected automatically. And it does not have a computer capable of that. Basically, the camera needs a specific aperture to calculate exposures. I'm not sure what would happen if you set the lens to "A", but I suspect that none of the photos would turn out.

    which would you recommend for beginners, ae-1 or av-1? i’m just someone looking to buy a film camera for fun, for quick easy shots. i’ve heard great things about the ae-1 since it has such a great reputation, but i’m scared it might be too finicky for a beginner

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  4 года назад

      The AT-1. The AV-1 and AE-1 are both designed to be automatic so they won't do as good a job teaching you about film photography or exposure. Also, the AT-1 is probably the cheapest of the three (and the most well built.)

      This is quite the change from your first comment. Yes, creators can see comments that you
      And no. It's not like a point and shoot. It's and SLR designed to be user friendly, and to do some of the exposure calculation for the user, but not all. It's a camera designed to give people who don't want or don't need to learn all to details about using a camera with the ability to still take good photos.
