I retired as a captain/patrol division commander in 1997, frequently filled in as a deputy chief when my boss was out, and got a good look at the job of a police chief. The politics at that level is nothing I’m good at & I had zero interest in any promotions beyond captain. All police chiefs get hired to be fired when the political winds shift.
