thank you for not stopping the video and commenting, and the minimal comments while you were listening. thats probably the heaviest song you'll ever hear...its a trip...which was their intent. The beauty of the song is that at the end of it, you have no idea what you just heard.
"Echoes of a distant time." Yup. Literally, when hearing this song now. I don't just remember, I FEEL the autumn of when I first heard and got into this song. It's so visceral.
I know how you felt when you first heard Echoes. It was a spiritual epiphany. It's way beyond being just a piece of music. You become absorbed into the piece. It picks you up and carries you. You have no control of any of the emotions you're feeling. You have to go where ever it takes you. I know what you felt when you said you were emotionally drained. It really is an incredibly evocative and powerful piece of music.

You were proper brave for taking Echoes on! It lulls you into a false sense of security before taking you into the depths, and eventually back up into the sunlight again, in the most glorious way imaginable. After Rick Wright passed away David Gilmour stated he would never play Echoes again. "Echoes is a musical conversation between Rick and I. With Rick gone, that particular conversation has ended."
From a musical mosaic was born this work of art, here is how: The band sat down in January of 1971 to begin to work on what they felt would be their best piece to date. Work began by allowing a very open atmosphere for creativity, putting down any and all ideas that anyone had. First, 24 concrete musical ideas were recorded, which was later expanded to 36. One of the experimental ideas that was used for creating this piece was that the group would decide on a key, and while the rest of the band left the room, one of them would play something, each person adding bits and pieces. While playing around with his keyboards, Rick decided to amplify them through a Leslie rotating speaker. One particular note stood out very clearly. Dave called it "a strange resonance ... kind of a feedback thing ... Ping! A complete accident. We said 'That's great!' and we used it as the start of the piece. "

Remember as a 13 year old in 74 had Echoes on sitting in my back room with my mates lights off scaring the pants off them! Phenomenal LP by the greatest band ever, love seeing younger people appreciate this genius music.
This piece is still powerful 50 years after hearing it. You can never know how profoundly a piece of music can be on a person's life, but I do not think things are quite the same after hearing this. So many people use the word Journey. And it can even be repeated. Under certain circumstances, the crows... hearalds of impending death, scared the bejesus out of me. But then, there is the soft, beautiful, ascending ending too. One of the best reactions I have ever seen, thank you so much.
Can you believe this was recorded in 1970? Yes, 51 years ago! They were so ahead of their time. You dont listen to Pink Floyd, you experience it and it takes you on a journey that touches your soul. Please listen to Hey You from The Wall album, but you must see the lyrics while listening. A powerful song about loneliness and isolation that will spark your emotions.
I wouldn't say ahead of its time, I'd say it's exactly in the proper time it should be and it's timeless. They took all the music they had absorbed and made an amalgamation of Blues, Rock, Jazz, Classical, film scores and added an electronic component to it. This is what they're known for and no one has been close to repeating it, I think it's unrepeatable without being derivative.

I introduced the band when they previewed this whole album in Norwich Norfolk U.K. - what a privilege! The music is literally transcendental. GDAŃSK was the finest concert that Gilmour did IMHO. Dark Side of the Moon will blow you away guaranteed - particularly GREAT GIG IN THE SKY
This masterpiece best experienced laid back on your bed, in a dark room WITH your eyes closed, and big puffy analog earphones cable-tethered to an ol' skool hi-fi stereo turntable playing that entire b-side of the vinyl with the obligatory hisses, pops, and scratches.. I’ve been doing ketamine therapy at a medical clinic and I listen to this song with my eyes closed in a dark room. Although I’m in a medical facility when I do it, it is a religious experience. It’s a little jarring when the the nurse wearing scrubs walks in at the end
This is my favorite song ever, because it shows all the different shades of life. While you were listening to it, I was accompanying and soloing with my guitar the entire time in my little flat in Paris. Of course i was crying because it's Pink Floyd, they just get us. It’s great to finally find someone with the analogy that I thought. I would love to talk about this music with someone. I’m yet to meet them. Echoes will be my forever and I will be forever thankful to Pink Floyd for giving me a positive direction in life.
I have known this piece for like 50 years and I'd drifted away from it. But I've remembered lately what a phenomenal piece of music this is... quite remarkable.
I love the first half of this song quite a bit, the second half too. The chiming, the slow introduction of new instruments, and the lyrics. Telling the story of the genesis of humanity and the constant fight from life to exist. But then the song gets quiet. We're left alone, in the world that was created for us. No hope from above. And then we hear it again. The chime returns. Warning that our journey is not yet over, that there is more to overcome.

I still remember the first time I listened to this song. Like 25 years ago now… and at that time the song was already like 25 years old. A depth that can reach across generations. Love.
The back story is that Pink Floyd wrote it to sync with the final act of Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. When you watch the sync, both movie and song make perfect sense and you’ll never see art the same way again
I can still remember sitting with friends back in the 70s listening to this (altered state of mind of course because that's what you did back then) and commenting how we would still be listening to this 50 years later.... I've always interpreted the middle scary part as an unwelcome journey into some dark depth. Just when it seems all hope is lost the faint ping becomes a life line that builds gradually to a crescendo breaking through into the light.
Or taking a deep dive into an underwater cavern, and getting lost inside. Then before running out of air, a geyser shoots you up through the roof of the cave and into the streaming sunlight beaming down below the surface. Guiding you back up.
A little late to the party, but... your reaction reminds me of my own, when I first heard this 50 years ago, as a 16 year old. Played it over and over, standing in front of the stereo, sweat running down my body. Now here I am, 66, and I still think Echoes is one of the most perfect pieces of music ever recorded. I remember thinking, "Wait... is it alive? Is there life? it's alive! it's life!" That hypnotic ping, like water feeding the scorched earth and then the chords,... and the sorrowful viola scanning the scarred earth, but proving that the life was real and new and then I realized the slowly growing, slowly entering my mind syncopation, getting stronger, life bloodflow, and with the guitar comes animation, and the symbals. and then suddenly running....
Pink Floyd have create many Songs that by Masterpieces, but for me "echoes" was the Song that is on Top off all. The lyrics and the composion are absolutely unmachted. It is the highest piece of Art in Musikbuisness and History. When People listen to it in 100 Years, the will blown away, it is timeless. This Musik is from another World and tear out your Soul and penetrate it and but it back to your Body. I´m a Pink Floyd fan for decates and "echoes" is the crown jewel auf the entire Music History. I have been listening to Pink Floyd since 1973 when I was 13 and I fell in love with them and it has never lessened. They have gotten me through some bad times. I’ve heard this song a million times. But watching her reminds me of the first time I ever experienced this magic. But to what it works through someone else is beyond words. I can feel what she is feeling. She is really listening, really experiencing and you cannot help but see & feel it with her all over again. Music truly is the language of the soul.

I was fortunate to see them live twice (The Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wall). At the end of The Dark Side Of The Moon they went off and came back on again for an encore. As soon as we heard the first two "pings" on the piano we knew that they were going to do Echoes for an encore (and they did all of it). Amazing night.

I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan. In fact it is my favorite band since I heard them for the first time, a long time ago. There are many Pink Floyd songs that I love, but Echoes is my favorite. Besides the live concert versions of this piece you might like the very early video at Pompeii with no audience, just them being recorded in the open air. They are hardly more than boys here. It is in two parts. I think this is during the time period when they were melding into a creative force, Roger's bass gives a mesmerizing beat to the dreamy flow.
Greatest piece of music of the twentieth century, Floyd's best song, and at least one of the greatest love songs ever written too, although it goes deeper than that.
It's definitely not my favourite Pink Floyd piece, but Pink Floyd is indisputably my favourite band, and has remained so for decades. Echoes is best enjoyed w/ the Live at Pompeii video. Where you get to see the band members, and a young and gloriously beautiful, David Gilmour playing it in a haunting amphitheatre.
@@saintejeannedarc9460 Live in Pompeii? NEVER. Only once, have I ever heard a live recording that's better than a timeless studio original: Bullet the Blue Sky live in New York, from Rattle n Hum. Otherwise, there's ALWAYS so much missing. A studio original, has so much depth, so much of the intellect poured into it: that's just not there. Another example I give, is another complex song (and my favourite Led Zepp): No Quarter. It's simply too complex to possibly do justice live, there are too many layers, too much is missing. Another thing, is that pretty much ALL live music sounds good-when you're there, but it sounds dreadful in recordings. But anyway, I appreciate that you at least appreciate Floyd.
I loved your emotional reaction. Nice to see someone really feeling this music. This was the album in which Pink Floyd really found their own new musical direction after the departure of their founding leader, Syd Barrett. It laid the groundwork for their best works to come (Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, parts of The Wall).
This song never fails to move me every time I hear it. I still remember the first time I heard it, and seemingly had a very similar reaction. It truly is amazing art.
You react so strongly to music, and it’s an absolute joy to watch. As you move your arms and hands to some parts, the expressions on your face, in your eyes, makes me understand Abd be moved by the music more… thank you…. 💕 Added later: what I got was life emerging from the seas onto land, right through to the movement/development into space and the universe.
For me this song represents life and earth as a whole. The initial high pitch piano note at the start represents the start of the universe or the start of earth and the creation of it all. David’s first solo along with the background keyboard makes think about how beautiful the creation of earth is and then the song gradually gets more hectic as it leads up to the high pitched screaming sounds, which could represents the chaos of the planet and the universe before life started developing. The high pitched squealing part gives me the feeling of loneliness as if the earth is now capable of producing life but it’s empty. And then finally the gradual build up to the ending and once again the single piano note represents life rising up and slowly becoming what is to be our past, present and future. That’s how I view this piece when I listen to it. I had to listen to it a couple times before I fully understood this concept but it brought a tear to my eye once I got it :)
When I used to listen to this as a 1970's high school kid, it felt like a journey from the blues to an alien planet--and somehow that worked very well for me.
That spooky mid section instantly (and I mean INSTANTLY) made me think "this is what it sounds like after death, in the state between two lives/incarnations. I've never had such a strong reaction to any music before or since.. It was instant recognition, like a hammerblow to the soul. But not in an unpleasant way, just tremendously impactful. Love your soulful response, by the way. Your soul is as beautiful as your face..
Early on in the song, you hear blues and funk. Keep in mind that the founder Syd Barrett named the band after two blues artists: Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. As the band progressed, they moved away from shorter songs, pop, rock, blues and more into experimental and psychedelic, as you hear later in the song. One of the greatest musical artists of any time. There's a reason they've sold more albums than almost any artist on the planet.

The great groups do take control of your emotions, take you for a ride: Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin always assume control of us; Dire Straits, Jethro Tull, Supertramp, Rush and Eurythmics are pretty darn good at it too. It was a far less litigious time. It really doesn't matter in the grand scheme. Phantom is a great song that moves many people to this day, as does Echoes. It seems better to me that both exist.
I first heard this song in the backseat of my parent's car on a day trip. It was exciting hearing such revelatory much. Put me in a good mood. And, I still go back to it over a decade later. It's a special song. I've been studying geography, and one of my favorite things is learning about various African cultures. It'd be disappointed if I never got to see Nigeria someday. Cheers! ✌️
After so many years and listening to Echoes hundreds of times this is my favorite PF song. Just so prefect, mysterious, so many layers and great transitions. You are right it is a journey. That is why the longer prog rock songs are so great. The band has time and space to develop the scene and theme and take you on a wonderful ride. If you like Pink Floyd you should also try Yes in the 1971 to 1977 time period. They were also masters of prog rock epics that could take you on a sonic journey and create a movie via sound. So much amazing music was made at that time. I see you have reacted to many PF albums and you are not afraid to try the longer epics (like this) so that is a great reason to subscribe. Continue you Prog Rock journey. And do not worry for a first listen your reaction is perfect and is the way we felt 50 years ago. Bought this when it was released, after being being transported by Atom Heart Mother, and Echoes remains my favourite PF track, and your reaction reminds me of when I first heard it, loud on my hi-fi, perfection. For something different, do try Epitaph from King Crimson’s first album, In The Court of the Crimson King. 😊

Meddle with Echoes is not an easy listen.
I have known this piece for like 50 years and I'd drifted away from it. But I've remembered lately what a phenomenal piece of music this is... quite remarkable.
Best band of all time, possibly best piece of all time, best reaction video I’ve seen, this song is very emotional, and intense.
I love the first half of this song quite a bit, the second half too. The chiming, the slow introduction of new instruments, and the lyrics. Telling the story of the genesis of humanity and the constant fight from life to exist. But then the song gets quiet. We're left alone, in the world that was created for us. No hope from above.
And then we hear it again. The chime returns. Warning that our journey is not yet over, that there is more to overcome.
Pink Floyd is one of my favorite rock and roll bands and your emotions were sincere and raw that's what happens when music hits you to the core of emotions pink Floyd does that to people
I still remember the first time I listened to this song. Like 25 years ago now… and at that time the song was already like 25 years old. A depth that can reach across generations. Love.
The back story is that Pink Floyd wrote it to sync with the final act of Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. When you watch the sync, both movie and song make perfect sense and you’ll never see art the same way again

I can still remember sitting with friends back in the 70s listening to this (altered state of mind of course because that's what you did back then) and commenting how we would still be listening to this 50 years later....
I've always interpreted the middle scary part as an unwelcome journey into some dark depth. Just when it seems all hope is lost the faint ping becomes a life line that builds gradually to a crescendo breaking through into the light.
Listened to it in the 70's and now I'm in my 70's and it's still great. Oh to be young again:)
Or taking a deep dive into an underwater cavern, and getting lost inside. Then before running out of air, a geyser shoots you up through the roof of the cave and into the streaming sunlight beaming down below the surface. Guiding you back up.
I think of it the same way.
Great reaction. IMHO, I believe this is one of the greatest songs ever written and Floyds high water mark.
A little late to the party, but... your reaction reminds me of my own, when I first heard this 50 years ago, as a 16 year old. Played it over and over, standing in front of the stereo, sweat running down my body. Now here I am, 66, and I still think Echoes is one of the most perfect pieces of music ever recorded. I remember thinking, "Wait... is it alive? Is there life? it's alive! it's life!" That hypnotic ping, like water feeding the scorched earth and then the chords,... and the sorrowful viola scanning the scarred earth, but proving that the life was real and new and then I realized the slowly growing, slowly entering my mind syncopation, getting stronger, life bloodflow, and with the guitar comes animation, and the symbals. and then suddenly running....
This is a masterpiece. I love the bits that are almost 'not music' but they just set you up for the massive chord progressions to follow.
Pink Floyd have create many Songs that by Masterpieces, but for me "echoes" was the Song that is on Top off all. The lyrics and the composion are absolutely unmachted. It is the highest piece of Art in Musikbuisness and History. When People listen to it in 100 Years, the will blown away, it is timeless. This Musik is from another World and tear out your Soul and penetrate it and but it back to your Body. I´m a Pink Floyd fan for decates and "echoes" is the crown jewel auf the entire Music History. Pink Floyd is Perfection in the form of music
Younger generations cannot cope with original creative music whereas we oldies at that time just jumping up and down with it....could not wait to get the next album from Pink Floyd..or from a whole host of bands all striving to be "different"

I have been listening to Pink Floyd since 1973 when I was 13 and I fell in love with them and it has never lessened. They have gotten me through some bad times. When I am feeling down I just put them on and I am transported outside my mind and my trouble's.

I’ve heard this song a million times. But watching her reminds me of the first time I ever experienced this magic. But to what it works through someone else is beyond words. I can feel what she is feeling. She is really listening, really experiencing and you cannot help but see & feel it with her all over again. Music truly is the language of the soul.

I was fortunate to see them live twice (The Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wall). At the end of The Dark Side Of The Moon they went off and came back on again for an encore. As soon as we heard the first two "pings" on the piano we knew that they were going to do Echoes for an encore (and they did all of it). Amazing night.
as a teenager , when this came out, it requird a dark room, headphones and may be a tipple. the effect was mind blowing.

Echoes was the end of their journey where they completed their progression.
It is their finest work.
I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan. In fact it is my favorite band since I heard them for the first time, a long time ago.
There are many Pink Floyd songs that I love, but Echoes is my favorite.
For me, it is imagining myself traveling through the cosmos aboard an intergallactic ship and listening to Echoes in the background.

Besides the live concert versions of this piece you might like the very early video at Pompeii with no audience, just them being recorded in the open air. They are hardly more than boys here. It is in two parts. I think this is during the time period when they were melding into a creative force, Roger's bass gives a mesmerizing beat to the dreamy flow.

Greatest piece of music of the twentieth century, Floyd's best song, and at least one of the greatest love songs ever written too, although it goes deeper than that.
It's definitely not my favourite Pink Floyd piece, but Pink Floyd is indisputably my favourite band, and has remained so for decades. Echoes is best enjoyed w/ the Live at Pompeii video. Where you get to see the band members, and a young and gloriously beautiful, David Gilmour playing it in a haunting amphitheatre.
@@saintejeannedarc9460 Live in Pompeii? NEVER. Only once, have I ever heard a live recording that's better than a timeless studio original: Bullet the Blue Sky live in New York, from Rattle n Hum. Otherwise, there's ALWAYS so much missing. A studio original, has so much depth, so much of the intellect poured into it: that's just not there. Another example I give, is another complex song (and my favourite Led Zepp): No Quarter. It's simply too complex to possibly do justice live, there are too many layers, too much is missing. Another thing, is that pretty much ALL live music sounds good-when you're there, but it sounds dreadful in recordings. But anyway, I appreciate that you at least appreciate Floyd.

I loved your emotional reaction. Nice to see someone really feeling this music. This was the album in which Pink Floyd really found their own new musical direction after the departure of their founding leader, Syd Barrett. It laid the groundwork for their best works to come (Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, parts of The Wall).
A subtle way this tune I've always felt describes a part of life's creation.

The middle part you talked about. I swear it sounds like people in Hell being tormented 😫 that's the feeling that I got.
For me this song represents life and earth as a whole. The initial high pitch piano note at the start represents the start of the universe or the start of earth and the creation of it all. David’s first solo along with the background keyboard makes think about how beautiful the creation of earth is and then the song gradually gets more hectic as it leads up to the high pitched screaming sounds, which could represents the chaos of the planet and the universe before life started developing.
The high pitched squealing part gives me the feeling of loneliness as if the earth is now capable of producing life but it’s empty.
And then finally the gradual build up to the ending and once again the single piano note represents life rising up and slowly becoming what is to be our past, present and future.
That’s how I view this piece when I listen to it. I had to listen to it a couple times before I fully understood this concept but it brought a tear to my eye once I got it :)

When I used to listen to this as a 1970's high school kid, it felt like a journey from the blues to an alien planet--and somehow that worked very well for me.
That spooky mid section instantly (and I mean INSTANTLY) made me think "this is what it sounds like after death, in the state between two lives/incarnations. I've never had such a strong reaction to any music before or since.. It was instant recognition, like a hammerblow to the soul. But not in an unpleasant way, just tremendously impactful.

Early on in the song, you hear blues and funk. Keep in mind that the founder Syd Barrett named the band after two blues artists: Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. As the band progressed, they moved away from shorter songs, pop, rock, blues and more into experimental and psychedelic, as you hear later in the song. One of the greatest musical artists of any time. There's a reason they've sold more albums than almost any artist on the planet.

It was a far less litigious time. It really doesn't matter in the grand scheme. Phantom is a great song that moves many people to this day, as does Echoes. It seems better to me that both exist.
I first heard this song in the backseat of my parent's car on a day trip. It was exciting hearing such revelatory much. Put me in a good mood. And, I still go back to it over a decade later. It's a special song.
I've been studying geography, and one of my favorite things is learning about various African cultures. It'd be disappointed if I never got to see Nigeria someday. Cheers! ✌️
After so many years and listening to Echoes hundreds of times this is my favorite PF song. Just so prefect, mysterious, so many layers and great transitions. You are right it is a journey. That is why the longer prog rock songs are so great. The band has time and space to develop the scene and theme and take you on a wonderful ride. If you like Pink Floyd you should also try Yes in the 1971 to 1977 time period. They were also masters of prog rock epics that could take you on a sonic journey and create a movie via sound. So much amazing music was made at that time. I see you have reacted to many PF albums and you are not afraid to try the longer epics (like this) so that is a great reason to subscribe. Continue you Prog Rock journey. And do not worry for a first listen your reaction is perfect and is the way we felt 50 years ago. You need to listen to this type of music a few times to really hear it. Great reaction.
Bought this when it was released, after being being transported by Atom Heart Mother, and Echoes remains my favourite PF track, and your reaction reminds me of when I first heard it, loud on my hi-fi, perfection. For something different, do try Epitaph from King Crimson’s first album, In The Court of the Crimson King. 😊
