Well, he did clarify not to go over the "double solid painted lines," but he did provide very little clarification as to that detail and I don't think he mentioned it that specifically at any other point.
@josifish4 yep already noticed the other two comments. I just didn't catch the part about it being the car pool I guess. The way the clip is cut makes it sound like he was saying all lane splitting is illegal. Situation as a whole wasn't as clear. Everyone was overly angry.
Can’t see if anyone’s confused on why it’s bad to lane split but I’ll say it anyways; riding on a solid or striped line is just as bad if not worse than riding on puddles because it has much less if not any grip unlike the road has; very dangerous especially for a bike
You kinda forget that the reason ticket was valid and the cop was both professional and informative. Heck he even cracked a joke about not making bikers look bad.
For yall saying lane splitting is legal in california, it is, however not in this case where he clearly said the dude was splitting double yellow lines which is illegal for everyone.
He wasn’t breaking any law though. The officer factually is wrong. Go read CHPs own website. “LANE SPLITTING-Defined by California Vehicle Code Section 21658.1 as driving a motorcycle, as defined in Section 400, that has two wheels in contact with the ground, between rows of stopped or moving vehicles in the same lane, including on both divided and undivided streets, roads, or highways.”
He was riding on a double yellow, with his flashers on probably going slow saying look at me.. I would actually expect to get pulled over on mine doing that. You can't cross over solid double yellow
I believe that the lines he is talking about are solid lines, which in that case, you can't cross a solid line, unless it's to pull off the road, in a breakdown or emergency. It could have been a lane sharing or a passenger vehicle lane, I think they call it. If it's a doted line, you can legally lane split, if done safely. He could have been doing it not safely, or at a high rate of speed, which is illegal and people doing that can ruin it for everyone. In those cases, I agree with the cop. More should have been shown on this video, because we don't know. Motorcycles are supposed to only do lane splitting, during traffic backups, because of bikes like mine, that are air cooled. I still won't drive on the line. I will stop close to the line at lights, but that's incase the car behind me, if it doesn't stop, which it's happened, where the person behind me ends up beside me and hits the person in front of me, or runs the light. It's probably happened twice, maybe 3 times, in the over 10 years mostly driving a motorcycle, to save on gas. I have gotten a ticket for parking where my foot was on the line and I took it to court and I was paid for my day of loss wages, then maybe $50 more. I had to pay for parking, so maybe a little less. I would have rather not gone through harassment and worked that day.
@@batvette not a single line was seen in the video. And officer didn’t even verbalize that detail until after he erroneously stated that its lane sharing and not lane splitting. From the CHP of California website: “LANE SPLITTING-Defined by California Vehicle Code Section 21658.1 as driving a motorcycle, as defined in Section 400, that has two wheels in contact with the ground, between rows of stopped or moving vehicles in the same lane, including on both divided and undivided streets, roads, or highways.” Edit: I’m reviewing again, as of 2024 there’s no restrictions to lane splitting. It’s advised to split only between the far two left lanes (protected or otherwise - your magical double lines don’t count). The only restriction isn’t actually lane splitting: driving on either shoulder isn’t allowed. i.e. you can’t use either side breakdown lane to split. It’s also recommended you split at 40mph or less… but again not legally limited.
@@shamaYahu8635 the double yellow lines are irrelevant. California law is pretty explicit on it. You can look up CHP California lane splitting laws right now and see it all written on their own website.

I know there is ABSOLUTELY no lane splitting in Texas anymore. It's new, came out last year, but no more in Texas. Don't understand sharing lanes. Unless you share with another biker, and I don't know a state where that isn't legal. I guess Cali must have a bunch of tiny little cars. Because in Texas, you aren't getting anything in next to our pick-up trucks. 😃
I do! It’s scary as hell. Lol. People on Tesla autopilot everywhere. Tailgating the hell out of me. Lots of riders pass me and that ok - I pull into a gap quick and let them through.

Geez the cop is one hundred percent correct whats wrong with you people. The issue isnt splitting vs sharing. The issue is obviously that this guy was riding right on top of the double yellow between the #1 and carpool lanes. You cant do that. You have to be either in the carpool OR the number one lanes, you can share those with a car but you can NOT cross over the double yellows or ride on top of them, or "split" those lines.
