IUCN Status: Least Concern (Population Decreasing)
Description: Dark above with its rich, rufous colour neck, cheeks and flanks, and bright yellow gape. The rufous is replaced by a dirty brownish grey in non-breeding and juvenile birds.
Food: Aquatic invertebrates, larvae, molluscs, crustaceans, frogs and small fishes.
Habitat: Heavily vegetated areas of freshwater lakes, ponds, sheltered bays, reservoirs, slow-flowing rivers, lagoons, swamps, and rice-fields.
Distribution: Europe, Asia, New Guinea and Africa.
