For future reference on wanting a semi permanant mount try clear silicone adhesive. As a truck driver I kinda of know rough vehicle bouncing around. I think it would have been an option for the compressor/toolbox. It is the miracle wonder stuff jack of all uses.
Did you install or are there sturdy oem anchor tie down points, d rings inside cargo trunk area of the OBW? How and where to install if needed to tie down a 12v fridge, cargo boxes etc? Thx.
Question, how are you mounting your maxtrax, shovel and axe to your cross bars? Can you provide a link to the hardware you used so I can do the same for my OBW? Thanks!
We have a video specifically designated to the rack and the components we used to mount all the items on top. It also has links available for the products!
Check out 3M mounting tape, if you heat it up using a heat gun or lighter its basically permanent. Used to do this to GoPro mounts for mountain biking. May not work in all situations, but its really strong and can open up a lot of options for mounting things in the car.
I'll be honest. I'm not all that interested in Subaru offroading and I figured this would be less off road adventure and more dirt road at most. But the fact that you are trying to figure out a winch for it tells me you have other plans. Kinda interested now. Lol
@@roamingwithjosh I just try and support good channels. So ill check out what you come up with. Id guess you will corner the youtube market on that content lol
Bud I know this video is older now and you might have taken care of that compressor by now, but look into molding fiberglass. It’s incredibly easy and it’s essentially creating your own perfectly custom shaped boxes. Just cover your spare tire well with suran wrap, get some fiberglass dipped in whatever the hardener is called and cover the inside of the well with it, wait a few hours and then trim off the excess going outside of the well so your left with only what you need.
Price and uncertainty. I’m not exactly sure what I’m going to do entirely yet in terms of the roof rack set up, but I needed something to carry the few items I have that don’t really have another spot inside the vehicle. I may make a change in the future, but for now I like what I have working.
Really exciting to see what you are up to with the Outback. I am saving up for my FlatOut Suspension upgrade with the heavy duty springs to support the added weight. Kudos on just adding the bars with a roof rack, great weight saving idea! As for a a winch I saw the guys from myrescurewinch have a portable option that seems interesting. Why the ARB air compressor,? Another idea I had was to get a small inverter, maybe like the one used in the Honda Ridgeline. It's designed to fit under the back seat so figured to do the same w/the Outback.
I’m thinking flat out also, just trying to see what my needs are. I’ve seen some portable winches, but a come-along is just as good and cost far less. The compressor is for airing my tires up after we get off a trail as well as adding pressure to my water tank. My buddy is building me a battery pack that will be my main power station for all our devices that I will keep in the vehicle when we travel. Thanks for the input!
I'm about to install the RAM Mount version of the rail system on my Wilderness. So glad I show this video in confirmed and answered a couple of outstanding issue I was have. Was wondering if you could show a photo of how you ran the wiring. I will be mounting my phone and GPS on the rail. Thanks in advance
@@roamingwithjosh from the devices you mounted on the rail on the dash to the plug in source. Source could be the like of USB or 12VDC. Did you try to hide them or did you just run them with an adhesive clamp here and there. Or just drop them (the wires) over the dash to the centre console area? Thanks
Have you determined what the part number is to replace that top center dash piece where you mounted your phone/device mounts? I ordered some stuff from 67 designs last night and would like to go ahead and get a spare of that top center dash piece.
@@roamingwithjosh I ended up doing a similar dash setup as you did. My first time using 67 designs. That’s some really nice stuff! Also, I determined the part number for that top center dash piece. I ordered it from my dealer and picked it up on Friday. It was only $27. Part #66241AN00A.
This is exactly the type of videos I’ve been looking for! I’ve got a 2020 Outback XT and I’ve wondered if someone would ever fab a new plate mount where the center speaker grill is located - I like your alternate idea! Keep these vids coming!
@@roamingwithjosh Driving Sports TV was showing your car with a lift and rear diff lock. I'm sort of surprised Subaru doesn't offer a diff lock on Forester and Outback.
@@roamingwithjosh Thanks. I had same then went with a Yakima LockNLoad platform which has been great but lately I’m thinking of going back to HD crossbars and a cargo carrier. Thinking 60” would allow me to mount awning on one side and WaterPort on other side 🤔
Hello, fellow wilderness owner here. What did you use for the ignition trigger under the hood of the car for the trigger 4? I have mine coming and was curious as what you used or if you just hard wired to the battery. Thanks! Love the build!
Hey, matt! I just wired the trigger to the battery. The red and yellow wires I put to the positive terminal and the black to negative. Hope that helps~
@@roamingwithjosh ok so yours isn't activated with the ignition it can be turned on whenever the car is off? I don't know if I trust myself (or my kids) to do it that way. Lol thanks for the reply. Appreciate the info!
As always your wilderness videos are heavily appreciated. Regarding the compressor- really impressed with the set up you did to make that work. Is that plugged into a 30A input on your trigger system? Do you use a relay of any kind for that? Or are those not needed. Thanks in advance !
Thank you! I did use the 30amp for the compressor and although the we’re not using a relay, I wouldn’t say it’s not needed. I’ve just never used them when installing my compressors and have never had any issues.
@@roamingwithjosh appreciate you man. Your channel has been an immense resource for me. (Trigger, ditch lights, compressor, roof system) I got my Wilderness in June 2021 and have been following every bit of modification content since then and your build tops the chart. Also, thanks for that shoutout to Wade in the Wilderness. I got a lot of work to do to catch up to you guys
No worries at all and we appreciate the support more than you may realize! Sounds like your build is coming along and would love to see it on the trail someday!
Great content, really liking how the build is coming along. Have you considered getting an external microphone? Your b-roll and other shots are good, now I just want to be able to hear you better, especially in a garage environment with lots of concrete and hard surfaces.
Hi! Courtney here! The wilderness is a FANTASTIC mombile! The kids are comfortable in the back, I’m comfortable up front - there’s no adjusting my seat to make sure the car seat fits in properly. The trunk is big enough for a stroller plus a ton of groceries! Great on gas, because I hate getting gas lol. It’s a very spacious comfortable car. Add in the bonus that this car can pretty much go anywhere, it’s perfect!
To keep the phone mount from jiggling put some 1/2 or 1" foam under mount. Loosen the adjuster screw & push down on bracket, tighten adjuster & that should take out the jiggling. Looking good so far. Still think you should hit a junk yard in the near future. At least to get some replacement parts for the plastic parts you drilled into. ps Might want to throw in some Jeep material so your original subs stay interested.
Great idea on the foam, I was thinking something similar. It’s coming, just a lot to get done on this vehicle and I want to document it as much as possible. Appreciate the input!
I am stoked for what you’re doing, but I have one criticism. These videos would be much better with about 80% less chatter. I’m not sure if you write and edit a script ahead of time, but this speaking style is like a stream of consciousness and not a lot of communication. As you said, “that was a lot of rambling.” Stoked to see what you do next!
I just roll with it, I don’t write a script. Sometimes the stream of consciousness is a good thing and others, not so much. I appreciate the comment as well as the feedback!
Love the work you’re doing on the Outback. Ironically, before I watched this video, I saw a video from Flatout Suspension in which they installed a Warn winch on a new 2021 Outback. ruclips.net/video/MHv0SzYLxOU/видео.html. Looked like a pretty clean install.

You can try Yakima platform, rhino platform with universal kit or prinsu(not sure they have for wilderness or not)
