I think that scissors are a personal choice; best chosen after trying the scissor type out. Scissors styles are an individual preference; some feel better than others when being used. I prefer the KAI scissors; they are well made and stay sharp. I like these models: Kai 5100c: 4-inch Needle Craft (Curved Tip) Scissors and the Kai 5130: 5-inch Double Curve Embroidery Scissors or Kai 5130p: 5-inch Blunt-Tip Double Curve Embroidery Scissors.
Yes my favourite sissors are the duck bill and I have been using them for years whilst dress making. I do use a pair of gunolds and a small angled pair of Maderia sissors as well. I'll come clean - I have never sharpened them even though I have the Fiskars sharpener! So guess what I shall be doing tomorrow......
Thank you for the tips. I have a pair of the duckbill scissors and never liked them and now i know I used them incorrectly . Now I will try them again.
Thank you for this information really useful. I have never tried the duck bill scissors although would like to get a pair. But since I was the lucky winner back along of the gunhold scissors I have found them really good and keep them somewhere safe so nobody else gets there hands on them, I have found my trimming around applique has improves ith these scissors. Before I would either not cut close enough or when trying to get in to corners on certain shapes make a real hash of it to close or sfabric shredding not cutting
I have used duckbills for ages. But I was taught that the bill always went under the fabric when you cut. I’ve noticed many people using them the opposite way. To me that would be uncomfortable. Thank you for the videos. I really do enjoy watching.
I haven't really ventured into applique yet so therefore I haven't gotten appropriate scissors yet. All I have ATM is straight pointed scissors. FYI- you could possibly contact a local pet groomer or hairdresser and find out who they use to professionally sharpen their scissors. They usually are in the know re: professional sharpeners.
I use duckbill scissors sometimes for larger areas but my favorite one for applique is small snips with a curved tip. They are very sharp so you need to be careful but they do a faster job for smaller areas.
I like the Great Information. I am going to have to invest in some of the ones you showed, since you keep teaching us all those cute Applique projects!!!!! I am from the world of Tackle Twill, no cutting. I have not cut into any applique, YET!!!! But, I have Cut a nip in something while trimming off my CutAway Backing!!!! Thank you for another Great Educational Video!!!!! Wow!!!!
Oh I love my duck bill scissors....I believe they were my first embroidery scissors I got and I remember they were expensive lol Never seen a sharpener...cool. I usually just use tin foil folded a few times and then cut through it... I also have tiny pointed scissors...I'm quite the gadget girl.
I wish I had this tutorial when I was first learning. I’ve left too much fabric before as well as cut too close and lost a couple of stitches so when the satin stitch ran I fabric separated and left a gap. Thanks for the tutorial!
Thanks for the info! I have left too much fabric when I have trimmed and then the satin stitch looks like it has whiskers coming out. I am always too nervous of cutting it too close.
My favorite applique scissors are the Gingher curse tip with a bend in the handle. They have a sharp point to get into tight areas, but I have to be very careful and not cut through the applique.
I find it impossible to find left handed duck billed scissors in UK. I am sure that when I do they will be prohibitively expensive. Thanks for the information. I have right handed duck billed scissors which are really helpful but left handed ones would be so much better. I have the bent scissors which are lovely as they can be used in either hand. The trouble is that left handed scissors need to have the blades the other way around as well so we can see exactly where we are cutting. Having said all that, I am getting better at trimming nice and close. Thank you.
Also Sue, where did you purchase the scissors from Gunold you speak of. I looked them up on their web site and the shipping was crazy. I do have a tax ID number, but no savings with the shipping being so pricey.
I do need the variety in my life right now!😂😂😂 I am currently using a pair that when I try to cut into corners I’m shredding more than snipping 😕 I know I need a better pair but for now it’s what I have. They were really sharp when I first got them though! Not so much anymore.... I need one of those sharpeners 😁
My biggest screw up with trimming appliqué is not getting it cut closely enough. Then the little threads peak out after the area is satin stitched. So frustrating.

Thanks for all this fabulous must know information❣️
I was using the duckbill all wrong. Using them properly is wonderful. Applique on.. Thanks Sue.
yes, applique on!
I have cut the fabric to close and cut the thread's. Thanks for the video.. I'm going to get me a pair.

I can't wait to see you use the duck billed scissors. I've had mine for over 20 years and don't think I've been using them correctly. 😳

Thanks for your video....I also need to find this sharpener, there are a few scissors wait to get sharp again 😇
Thanks for the tips, I bought the duckbill scissors recently, but haven't tried them yet.
I use duckbill and Applique scissors both

Love the video on the scissors! I have the duckbill but see I have been using them wrong! Thanks for showing the correct way!

I got me my first pair of 2 bend applique scissors while at applique getaway and can't wait until my poor machine is repaired to put them to use.
Awesome video Sue

Thanks for the useful info. I have pretty much all of those and like to use different ones for different projects.
Thank you! Have messed up applique trimming.
Thanks, more really good information
Thanks for the info! I have left too much fabric when I have trimmed and then the satin stitch looks like it has whiskers coming out. I am always too nervous of cutting it too close.
it takes a bit of practice to get it just right!

Thanks, I need a good pair.
Thanks for the tips, definitely need one of those sharpers !

Now I have looked for left handed duckbill scissors I have found some!! Hurray! No stopping me now! Thanks for all the information.

Need to know especially if you do sweet pea ocean table runner challenge. Each block is appliqué. And you need to get close.

Thank you for this info you are the best!!
I need to try and find a hand held sharpener. Much more convenient than the one on my electric can opener.
My biggest screw up with trimming appliqué is not getting it cut closely enough. Then the little threads peak out after the area is satin stitched. So frustrating.
Thank you for share
Great help, Sue! Thank you! Melissa Noel
Thank so much for the information ☺️ I always struggle with cutting to close on the application and mess it up 😳
I have cut the threads before
When I first started working with appliqué designs, I would always cut the appliqué too close and have to redo it😢
Thank you!
Thank you
:)
