  • Christians are the people of 'The Book'. The Bible is the most read book in the world. It is also the most translated book into thousands of languages. The word 'Bible' came from 'Biblos', a Greek word meaning book. It inspires, motivates, and transforms generations.
Reading is a transformative act as it enlightens the reader, who in turn will be able to enlighten the peer groups, families, communities and nations. It is the ability to read that transformed communities who were once marginalised. Reading could challenge structures of oppression, slavery and untouchability.
Reading is a communicative act. It inspires intrapersonal communication within the reader, that motivates the person to initiate communicating with the people around.
A book can also be a companion on a dull and boring journey or it could be a conversation starter, but it could never be a waste. For anyone who knows how to read, a book is not just pages of entertainment but also of knowledge and wisdom.
India celebrates 'National Reading Day' on the death anniversary of social reformer PN Panicker. Known as the Father of the Library Movement in India, Panicker passed away on 19 June in 1995 after revolutionising the practice of reading in the country.
Juanna P. Joyce is our Sunday School student. She recites a poem on the importance of reading.
