He said that this form of love is thought to be more of a sad type of love, and it is what he likes to write some of his films about.

i watched the movie for the first yesterday...I am so glad I did because my god.....this movie was great, just a fantastic world of fantasy with lots of character development and emotions and the animation....holy crap do I love Makoto Shinkai's work.
