It’s hard to beat FFT in my book. Like a lot of people it was my first tactics/strategy rpg. However, I’ve had a LOT of fun with Triangle Strategy since it’s release. It has a very similar vibe to FFT.
Final Fantasy Tactics was a bit tough at the end. The main Boss is a Royal Pain as he is able to teleport all over the place and you have to have the right skills to trap his sorry ass. Once you do ( took me like 3-4 times ) you can just wash the floor with him. Just make sure you are way up in lv and job skills to make an array of ways to nab him.
Funny thing, I got Fell Seal on my PC and had my kids "make their characters" my younger son wanted to be a fighter, my oldest wanted to be a healer. In combat they got to tell me what their character does. My younger son, being the bull he is, always charged in, and his brother would spend the entire fight trying to protect/heal him all while getting frustrated with him for being reckless. Some really fun gaming memories. Great list as always. Great time to be a JRPG/SRPG fan.
Triangle Strategy floored me! It was AMAZING! The characters are interesting and the story is amazing!! I love political intrigue! I replayed it multiple time to do every single path, including the “secret best ending” and never regretted a single second of it!
I'll admit I'm more partial to traditional turn based rpgs, but I've been getting more into strategy rpgs lately so this is a great list for me to keep in mind
I really DESPERATELY want them to release FFT:WotL on PC. I grew up with Nintendo, not with Sony, so unfortunately I've never had the pleasure of playing FFT. I did get to play FFTA and FFTA2 (the latter which I ADORED), so I think it's only reasonable that Squeenix releases WotL on Steam. Just for me. 🥺
There was a leak some time ago that mentioned a few games that would be released on modern consoles, and one of the games was fft. I know they're simply rumors, but one of the other games mentioned was tactics ogre, and that released already, so I feel it's just a matter of time.
@2:19 David states that the original version of Tactics Ogre was on the Playstation 1. The original Tactics Ogre actually was a 16 bit title on the Super Famicom. There was a later port to the PS1 of Tactics Ogre however. It's a slight mixup akin to saying the original Final Fantasy 5 was a Playstation game, when in fact it was a Super Famicom game later ported to PS1
@@sunekoo I feel like a jerk by being so nitpicky. Almost everyone says they have OCD and I don't think I really have a disorder, but when I hear anything I know to be factually inaccurate I have a strong compulsion to correct that statement regardless of how small and meaningless that inaccuracy might be.
Seeing Midnight Suns in there was a pleasant surprise. It’s honestly one of my favorite games in a long time. Shame many people wrote it off based on prerelease marketing. Its one of the most engaging, fun games I’ve played recently.
Have you played Troubleshooter: Abandoned Children ? It is a really in depth game with a lot of content. Another good one which released not too long ago is Brigandine The Legend of Runersia. There is a new SRPG released recently for the PC, Crimson Tactics: The Rise of the White Banner, any plans to review it ?
So I tried to look up Symphony of War (game #9 that was mentioned @2:43 ) for the switch but I can't seem to find it. I found a article that claimed it was coming in the summer of 2023 but as we are heading to fall I have not seen it out for the switch yet.
great list, David!! i've played and beat 7 of the 10 listed here, with the other three already sitting in my backlog. won't be long til i get to them, as strategy RPGs are my JAM. i audibly cheered when you mentioned Fell Seal and Symphony of War, those games deserve a bigger spotlight. i would like to also shout out a trio of games not on this list that are real hidden gems that i think any fan of this genre would greatly appreciate - the Rad Codex trio of games, Voidspire Tactics, Avlora Tactics, and Horizon's Gate. they're all on steam, and if you're reading this comment, please look them up! they're all very good and deserve so much more attention!!
The key to me playing a SRPG is it having exploration. I dont dislike SRPG combat, rather I actually love it, but I hate 99% of them not having it. Thats why the Shining Force series is still in my all time top 5. I liked Fire Emblem 3 houses as well because of the stuff you could do in between missions, but I still would have liked exploration in it.
Gonna add a couple more I've enjoyed: Ash of Gods The Way, Crimson Tactics Rise of the White Banner, Troubleshooter, Lost Eidolons, Wartales, Dark Deity, King Arthur Knight's Tale, Sword Legacy Omen, and Into the Breach.
I’m so sad that Midnight Suns will probably never get a sequel. I had so so so so much fun playing that game and would’ve loved to see how they expanded things in a sequel. Especially when there are so many other supernatural-based Marvel characters they could tell a story with.
I just finished sea of stars 100% and have had wandering sword on my list since you reviewed demo. Was looking at my wishlist and was pleasantly surprised to see it just released!
Aww man, Fell Seal was my favorite recent SRPG too. I also really enjoyed Symphony of War and Chroma Squad, but that last one is going back several years.
Hi David! Love a good strategy rpg. Fire Emblem, FFT, Tactics Ogre, and Growlanser are among my favs (on consoles). Thanks for another awesome video. Your hard work is much appreciated. Have a blessed day everyone!
Happy to see Triangle Strategy on there. What a great game! I'm guessing that all of the news from yesterday will be covered on Saturday's New RPG News?
The ones that filled the void of FFT for me was fell seal, diofield, triangle strategy and fire emblem. I was hoping to see your opinion of cross tails on here but since it didn’t make the list it’s probably not that great.
Having wed FFT in 1997, I'm glad to see so many people inspired by it. Triangle Strategy is getting a lot of my attention right now, and I have high hopes for the Front Mission remakes. What I'd really adore is a detailed mecha strategy game with a FFT-level realpolitik story driving it, but I know that's perhaps harder to pull off well in a modern setting.
Fantastic list, like always. I had not heard of Fell Seal before and it sounds interesting. I am wondering your thoughts on the “Romance of Three Kingdoms” games series. They are very similar to many of these games and have been around for a long time.
Hey there David. Great video. Been a subscriber since the beginning of the year. One improvement I would love to see (if you have time) would be dividing the video into chapters so I can easily go back and see my favorite games to pick up ❤
that was some brutal honesty about fire emblem 3h, though I do agree it was super annoying and repetitive. Engage felt light-hearted a little too light-hearted not that it's a bad thing just deviating from the dark war theme they had in their previous titles.
Sorry David, but I am compelled to "wEll AcTuAllY" you on calling Advance Wars a FE clone. It's the other way around. Intelligent Systems made Famicom Wars in 1988 and then thought "what if we did the same thing but sword and sorcery instead" and created Fire Emblem in 1990. The explosion in popularity for FE, especially on the SNES, led to FE getting more love over the years compared to its big brother. While the GBA duo are beloved, the rest of the series was just so overshadowed that it basically came to a halt on the DS.
We're still in the remake era of strategy RPGs, but hope is on the horizon. I'm surprised Diofield is so high- I think the main criticism is that combat is restrictive. I played the demo and paused on the full game because you can never use more than 4 characters, so combat didnt feel like it progressed or evolved. In the same breath you mentioned Ogre Battle 64, which is a favorite of mine. If you watched the Nintendo Direct recently I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Unicorn Overlord trailer!
I'm so behind on the new SRPGs coming out. Watching your vids made me want to get Advance Wars and Triangle Strategy, but I've been stuck playing Super Robot Wars 30. It's another good modern SRPG.
To add a game to this list, I really liked Dark Deity. It's kinda of a Fire Emblem clone, definitely inspired by these games. Is still a fun game and it takes elements from the very first FE games what the newer ones do not use anymore. This is a indie tactical game I can also recommend to anyone who is thirsty for more tactical JRPG's like I am.
Oh man I'm loving that shirt!... or is it those muscles that are POPPING out of it? lol 💖 OK! anyway, Midnight Suns surprised me although I did have a few issues with the gameplay it was a lot of fun. I haven't finished it because I am waiting for my wallet to re-fill to buy the Season Pass since having to pay UP-FRONT this time unlike FFXVI for the CE of Rebirth! OUCH!!!
David100K! I actually like the Three Houses approach BUT would prefer it not to be younger characters and also those outfits are terrible, so overall I liked Engage better too.
Huh I entirely skipped over engage because of the exact reasons you stated about Three Houses thinking that is just where the series was going. Guess I'll add Engage to my backlog.
Honestly not liking 3 Houses doesn’t mean you will automatically like Engage. While Engage does do away with the social sim stuff. It still has a hub area with a ton of boring things you have to do between battles and one of the worst stories in modern games. The gameplay is fantastic, but I couldn’t play it past 15 hours or so before putting it away for good. The bad just outweighed the good in the end for me. I honestly haven’t liked either of the recent FE games…they’re too bloated with nonsensical junk and annoying hub areas.
I've heard a lot of bad things about Arcadian Atlas, particular about the developer (begging for positive reviews and blaming the players for not liking the game/not knowing what they want). Something to look into before buying. Otherwise, a great list
fell seal is alright. i dont dislike the job system, though i do find myself just grinding them out. i do really dislike the art style though. feels generic or ai made.
Advance Wars had RPG elements? I played both on GBA when they came out way back when, so admittedly it has been a while, but I don’t remember it having RPG elements…
Its seems that second game looks like a system like ogre battle the march of the black queen for the snes specialy with the unit formation and the morale system but i like it and wan it to play it!!!!!
diofield? its ok. but it feels like a facebook game. and every fight kinda felt samey about half way through. by the time iw as done with it i only wanted to finish it so i could delete it off my sd card.

Curious. Is this wonderful game coming to Switch or other consoles? No PC.
Ditto was just about to ask the same question
I asked the developers on Discord and they said they are optimizing first for PC and then look at consoles. Switch was on their radar.
@@Matthew7772005 nice im a console gamer, I'd definitely buy the switch version

I like brigandine more than FFT to be honest

Correct. This is a pretty basic and bad oversight in an otherwise good video

Love seeing this genre surviving and thriving in the modern era. Come to think of it, I haven't played an SRPG in a pretty good while...
Super Robot Wars V and Disgaea 5 Complete are also great modern strategy rpgs
Thanks Dave, fabulous list!
I wasn't aware of and will buy "Wargroove" immediately.
Triangle Strategy, Fell Seal and FE Engage are my favourites!
Hey Davidvinc! Thank you so much for sharing about Wandering Sword! :)
My pleasure!
Have not heard of the top 2 games before, so those are now on my Wishlist.
My first ever rpg was a tactical/Strategy rpg called Project x Zone but honestly prefer Action combat. I really need to play more tactical rpgs.

Great list. Been playing wargroove a lot lately. Think I’m gonna buy Advance Wars today
never played a strategy RPG, but with your top 10, it may change. :) Be safe David.
No one talks about Shining Force 3 but I think it deserves to be on top 3 at least
Diofield needed to explain the ending more -- All these games are aces
Just to note that Arcadian Atlas is yet to be released for consoles. And when it does I will be buying it!
I have not tried your top two. They are on my Steam wishlist. FFT is still the GOAT.

Hello David how are you
Advance Wars had RPG elements? I played both on GBA when they came out way back when, so admittedly it has been a while, but I don’t remember it having RPG elements…
No
Still waiting Arcadian Atlas to be release in the consoles 😢 also Fell seal it’s a great !! One of the best!
I almost feel bad in saying this, but if it doesn't have that particular look (wargoove, fae tactics, tactics ogre), I just can't play it. 😅
do yourself a favor and play Yggdra Union and Gungnir
Its seems that second game looks like a system like ogre battle the march of the black queen for the snes specialy with the unit formation and the morale system but i like it and wan it to play it!!!!!
Divid u should play xcom2 .
diofield? its ok. but it feels like a facebook game. and every fight kinda felt samey about half way through. by the time iw as done with it i only wanted to finish it so i could delete it off my sd card.
DioField wasn't bad, but it just pittered out. The easy difficulty and the limited mission objectives didn't help.
Still waiting on Shining Force IV.
Shining Force > every other strategy RPG
No xcom 2? :( not a jrpg, but I really this game
Unicorn Overlord by Vanillaware was just announced I’m super excited
Where is the disgaea love?
Por que es tan guapo .
La estética de advance wars me sabe a mierda, que asco, el que más me interesa es triangle strategy.
No Lost Eidolons, really? We get tactics ogre instead. A game that is... not modern.
Zaddy
top 10 " modern strategy rpg "
ok but where are the modern strategy rpgs?
its just remakes and reports or whatever of things that already existed
All are good except war groove, advance wars and feel seal! 😂
