Transatlantic Return, Ep. 3: No one stops for a gam anymore

  • In the middle of nowhere I fall in with another westbound sailboat! But they just sail right on past. Whatever happened to the days of stopping for a gam, swapping stories of great whaling exploits and scantily clad Tahitian women? A few rain squalls supply me with some oh so precious fresh water. The brisk winds of the past week get progressively lighter.

      With very little electronics on board (GPS/InReach/VHS) and charts. A dark hull, beautiful, heavy, long keel, traditional Gaff rigged Cutter with no engine. Relatively slow compared to other lighter sail boats, this boat will not run away from weather but it is well equipped to take a beating. This boat is also his home. Whatever decision he makes, he literally has to live with it. An experienced, talented and ingenious sailor with fine seamanship and good judgement. A clear and easy to understand narrative style with no artifice. Mix all of that into a "one pot" meal and you have the making of a channel with an interesting and unique proposition. 😎

    The garmin inreach uses the iridium constellation for messaging. Maybe your comms trouble areas are where you are on a sat coverage overlap zone. Where you get 2 sattelites but at an unfavorable angle to both. There is a good animation here. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iridium_satellite_constellation. If you could hook up an better gain antenna that would improve. But i suppose there ir no external antenna plug on the inreach. Thank you for posting! If you're not already familiar... there are smart phone apps available that track the Iridium satellites and tell you when they'll be overheard. These apps work offshore, too, as all of the telemetry data is downloaded/installed before you leave. We timed our weather downloads to when a satellite was "in range", and it made a world of difference in how quickly/reliably we were able to download passage weather on our eastabout transatlantic. We use the Iridium Go offshore, but I'm pretty certain that the Garmin unit uses the Iridium network. Love your videos, by the way. All sailing!!! This pandemic has kept us stuck in the US - our boat is Portugal - your videos are keeping me sane until we can finally go "home" and back out to sea. Anyway, here is the app on Android: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.blueskynetwork.satfinder&hl=en_US&gl=US And, here is the app on Apple: apps.apple.com/uy/app/iridium-satfinder/id1528250647

    • @howtosailoceans1423
      @howtosailoceans1423  3 года назад

      Thanks for the info! So it seems that lack of satellite coverage may in fact be the problem. Are you happy with Iridium GO?

    • @Dptransom4u
      @Dptransom4u 3 года назад

      @@howtosailoceans1423 Yeah, there is not always a satellite overhead, but they pass by fairly regularly. It seems that they're out of range just long enough for the devices to "time out". We also use an external antenna for the unit, and that apparently helps with reception of weak signals. However, we absolutely experience a lot of "time outs" even with the antenna if we don't wait for a satellite to pass overhead. The satellites orbit in a N-S direction, so where you are on the globe shouldn't matter. As far as being happy... it's a little difficult to be happy with something that costs a small fortune (both for the unit and the service). However, generally, yes, we're pleased with the service. It generally works as advertised -we get our weather, and we can send and receive emails just fine. I haven't compared data rates to the Garmin, so I can't opine on their competitiveness in terms of price. If Garmin is indeed buying time on Iridium satellites, it seems likely that Iridium traffic might take priority (though I have no evidence to support that statement).

    Kevin, from what I can gather, you have two Garmin devices. The yellow one (GPS) that you use to report your position and the red one (InReach) that you use for messaging and marine weather reports.
    Your GPS device seems to work normally. You do have a problem transmitting to Iridium. Either this is a problem with Iridium which I doubt (they provide 100% coverage) or the batteries are getting old in your InReach device. Transmitting requires more power. That device did work in the past, isn’t it?
    If you are satisfied with the Marine Weather Reports and since you are already familiar with Garmin products, I would suggest selling both devices and getting the Garmin GPSMAP 86sci which merges the capacity of both devices. The 86sci provides tracking, backup navigation with charts and altimeter/barometer and 3 axis compass that you could use, among other things. Garmin also offers a powered mount which I would get.
    Overall, this solution might provide just the right features and capacity that you require. I would investigate this solution before investing in a PredictWind/Iridium solution. I am not sure if that solution offers two-way messaging. Also, it will likely be more expensive. Finally, I would download the 86sci manual from the Garmin web site and read it before going ahead with any purchase. Good luck and thanks for the videos.😎

    I don't know if you already have a HF rig as a backup, but digital modes for HF are kinda a game changer. That and similar advancements to radios to other forms of tech, and they are way smaller, more reliable, and consume much less power. You should look into js8call; you can message and send email on about 5-10 watts of power, and update your position with aprs or WSPR with under half A watt of power. A xeigu g90 would be a good choice. Cheap, small, 20 watts output.

    Can I suggest you turn the Inreach, so that the stubby aerial is not pointing straight up, as there could be a radio frequency null at position....try 45 degrees from straight up ! I'm an amateur radio ham G1 DJT.....

    How do you keep an eye out for ships, yachts or floating debris at night? Or while your trying to get some shut eye!? I saw one sailor come about 50 yards from a rusty peice of a ship about the size of a pickup truck just floating around out there.

    • @sdcofer52
      @sdcofer52 2 года назад

      If you have an AIS it helps. As for floating debris or containers, it is very hard to see and avoid, particularly at night.

    Thanks for the video, entertaining and a learning experience. I was having a casual conversation with a yacht designer and he mentioned that over his long career he had a problem with a boat with a foam core/glass transom hung rudder that was painted black bottom paint. He mentioned that the color was causing the exposed rudder top to heat up and causing the rudder to distort and bind. I like the look of your black hull but have you had any overheating problems in the tropics with your black hull?

    • @howtosailoceans1423
      @howtosailoceans1423  3 года назад

      No, not with overheating, I did have a problem years ago with water getting into the plywood core.
