- Greg hikes into the cold winter mountain bush with one item, determined to build a shelter that can help him survive the windy snowstorm and long dark night.
Greg is a self-taught survivalist from Canal Flats, British Colombia, who, since he was a boy, has read nearly every book on the topic. When he is not out in the wilderness, he is a professional dry-waller. He started his first bow drill fire when he was thirteen and spent the next forty years learning bushcraft and studying plants and edibles. He has even developed some of his own survival techniques and is a skilled hunter with both a bow and a slingshot.

"Comfort is a luxury, survival is necessary." Well said Greg..and well demonstrated
Interesting to me he doesn't wear gloves, I looked at his bare hands and thought "that looks uncomfortable!" 😅
I enjoyed your video. I am trying to learn as many survival skills as I can and at 70 years old I need it be simple and easy to watch. Thank you for being so down to earth.
I am an engineer working on a blast furnaces. We always discuss risks. I am so glad that you put that start to the video.
Risks can be managed if they are recognised. And tes, sometimes you get bitten by an unknown event. But covering any risks reduces the overall risk.
A vessel is always useful
I definitely think Greg should do an abandon car over night! love how you always come up with amazing content❤
That's how you get tetanus
@@thegreatoutdoors9769i used to work with steel had rust in my skin all the time, stepped on rusty nail few times in my life never got a single issue.
It might save your life if you came upon one, but it'll be nasty, and yeah, a lot of sharp, rusted metal and tetanus hazard.
Ok, 57 year old Ontario farmboy Canuck here. Glad to see a fellow Canuck making the best of the internet. Subscribed.
I love how down to earth he is. He doesn't care about money and I'm sure can buy a new truck but buys an older model probably so he can work on it himself. He's a good guy.
..hello, me too..
My son has your dogs “brother” he bought from the same people you got yours from just from the next litter. He loves him!
I too own a shepherd and was loving this vid just because he photo bombs him just like mine. Great video, beautiful dog. Thanks for sharing.
😀
I pray for the day theres an ovens x outdoor boys crossover. i think you guys do the best outdoor survival content out there.
Totally agree, have watched every single one of Ovens video's and a huge Outdoor Boys fan as well.
Agreed!!
I just thought this today. Cant comment on lukes videos to mention it there though. That would be INCREDIBLE! one in canada one in alaska!?
outdoor guy is eating wayyyy too much sugar with like anything, meat, eggs, sausages ... the worst diet you'd imagine
@@unboxing4319ok mum
If anyone's still wondering, that old car is a Buick... '66 or '67... not sure which model since the Canadian versions sometimes had different names and such... but the aluminum brake drums are the tell. As bad as it looks, it might actually be worth something since it's a 2 door hardtop.
I will go with 68' Grand Sport 400, judging by the missing big block that someone dragged up that hill, and the sqare brake vents on that front fender. In any case the body lines ID that as a Buick GS with the downward sloping door crease, and window outlines.
Looks like it even had 4 on the floor from what I can see. So 4 speed Buick GS 400? 68'?
Glad you could figure out the model. My first thought was 60s buick but i had no idea what it was.
@@coffeyscarburetors6437 Well , it's still just my best guess, but I would'nt bet on it cause someone might chime in with a correction before long.
Thank you for still teaching bushcraft and survival. Some RUclipsr's when they get big they turn into a reality show or advertising equipment. This was great.
Yeah and they pretend they sleep in the snow and pretend they have no water and food. Then the sleep in the car.
@@alexanderwright9064 I hope u guys dont refer to Luke from the Outdoor Boys.
@richard13794 No. there are the genuine but so many frauds... I live in the Northern Territory of Australia in the bush . My lifestyle is not city folk. Camping in Monsoon now .Crocidiles sll around me daily life. Greg is just a genuine bloke.
Oh, you mean like Fowler? I unsubscribed for that reason. Very likeable guy but went gimmicky.
@@bradjohnson8100 Yes!
Finally some good old greg content again!! Love it
Where should I buy a decent bow and arrow? Nothing too crazy, but one that is good quality and will last.
I’m a beginner, only looking to do it for fun /sport .
But I want a good enough bow that I can practice and get good with??
Thanks
Greg is, such a natural person, no airs and graces just down to earth genuine guy. I could watch and listen to him for hours, and I do.
Greg, your videography skills have gotten so good! Really capture the essence of what you’re doing and makes us feel like we’re there with you! Keep it going brother!
Hello there fellow Weaver 😂
Mate, I remember when you first started the channel after the "Survival Challenge" with the Ginger Camper. Fowler only has 1.5 M subscribers, and he's been doing this a hell of a lot longer than you. That says it all. I bet you never thought you'd have nearly 800K followers. It's awesome that you stuck with it. Because you're literally the only one that "Lives" a Wildlife style of existence. Instead of all the others, like Mr. Fowler, that only do it on weekends or holidays. You're the real deal. So, thank you for continuing to do what you do so well.
what i like about this channel, its real, its raw, its shows you that its not always comfortable, this is true survival
This guy is the #1 RUclips survivalist!
Yep. I only watch him and Xander Budnick
I mean... Les Stroud?
Outdoor boyz is the biggest channel for a reason 😃
That’s not a survivalist style @@johnchimbani8473
Everyone has their favorites..No disrespect to any of these real outdoor youtubers that have been on RUclips for many ,many years , and if you are a avid watcher of Bushcraft , you know who they are ... 😎
Greg, snowing while you’re building a shelter makes it a real world survival situation. Awesome videos.
If I'm alone in the woods I would want Greg with me,great job with the sandwich boards the other day outside the supermarket with Chef !.
Maybe if you had some giveaway stuff you could attract more interest.
@@sevenravens me? It's not my show fella 😉

@@davidsmith8997 I'm autistic and take things too literally,your right I think .
@@johngordonhouchen1312 Please explain to me some of your autistic quirks if you don't mind. Just curious.
Greg I could type a hundred sentences about how you’re the best but all I really have the energy to say is that I freakin love you, Finn and everything you put your energy into. That was a good shelter idea and I pray that your back won’t bother you too much through the summer months. Peace and love from the western states.
Great video as always Greg! Looking forward to Part 2 when you beef up the shelter; Hillside Hilton!
one thing I like to do is stack firewood on the cold side of the reflector/ 1-2 feet offset.. This both serves as a wind break for it, and dries any wet firewood.
Absolutely stunningly beautiful day here in Scotland today; no winds, no rain and a lovely light warm sunshine all day. It's the odd one day this beautiful that makes up for the pissing rain every other day!
My dad was from Scotland always wanted to visit their. My name is Erskine my twin brother is Lucian Stockard.
68 bruiick...well done Gregster...from Texas
Now that's a Greg Ovens worthy off-road truck! Nice and light. Bigger isn't better in snowy and icy conditions. Nice find.
Greg, I truly respect you! To me, you are the true definition of a man and a gentleman. I absolutely love your channel and thoroughly enjoy watching your adventures!!!
Down to earth and real, love it! Cheers from Norway!
Thank you and fin for your teaching us more responsible cramping and hiking. Smart advice from the the bush master. Fin runs like the wind . He so happy. Beautiful shepherd two shepherd 's in the bush. We love you and Fin. Thank you. O.R.M. rules!
The guy looks like the real deal. He lives what he teaches.
I'm angry. Why hasn't Ovens got millions of views!?🧐😠.He's amazing!! Share share share every1!
Because rel outdoor living/survival, is alot of work, too boring for ppl looking for quick fast easy entertainment....😏I enjoy these real vids...
Nice looking truck. Great advice making sure you communicate to someone where you're going and when you expect to be back. That alone could save your life. Great video, Greg - as usual.!
I think I would have found a few boughs for the bed even in the dark.
Greg love your videos in hospital right now so the video is helping with the time spent here lol keep up the awesome stuff ❤❤
That old cars been there for years right behind a cabin hes lived in for years hes never saw that car before .lol right on 👍
Please do part 2. Soon! Love you Greg. Videos are the best and I learn so much. 🔥Stay well, keep your joy and know you are blessed. ❤🔥
Great! The essential basics! Survive the night. Fire and shelter. Keep dry. That's it! Thank you for your content! It helps a lot!!! Best regards from Oldenburg/Germany! Jörg
Can't wait for part 2. I'd like to see you get a good night sleep in that shelter.
Yes definitely going to keep my eye out for parts 2. Poor Fin, he must be starving!
Yes to an overnight challenge in a car. But I think a 2 week survival challenge in the bush would be awesome too 🤣🐾❤️
This is a really great video Greg. This looks 'do-able' to me. Looking forward to the followup video. Stay safe!
Great job Greg. I agree, good thing you made the Shelter. Love the reflective fire idea.
Mr Ovens presents another Merch quote:
"Survival: It's not quite the same as the Hilton you know"
What a legendary guy
Finn is such a happy dog
My daughter believes your name is "Greg Muffins" and your dog is called "Tika", and nothing I say can convince her otherwise, but she is only 3. Thank you for having such a great channel, I put it on now and then to teach the kids survival skills!
Back to the old school shelter building survival videos I absolutely love it Greg thank you for this
finally some classic greg survival. love it
This kind of videos of Greg are life saver! and I like them the most.
I love how this is a survival video! you're like Bob Ross of Bushcraft
Many thanks to you mighty Greg for share you experience! Big hug from Italy!
Dear Greg, even if your lighter is empty, you still have a chance for a little flame. Remove the metalpiece from your lighter, and warm it up in your hand for a while. Then press the gas permanently with your left thumb, and ignite with the other hand. Now you can see at minimum a little blue flame, and you can start a fire.Greetings from the Black Forest
After watching your lighter video, I never go anywhere without out one. I keep one in my car and in my bag. Thanks Greg!
I love how the fire is away from the wood of the shelter. I remember several shelters catching on fire on alone, scary
Too many people don't bother with making a fireplace/ chimney.
brooo the dog is so cute that i can't focus on the video every moment the camera shows it has something in its mouth to play with 😆
I’ve never clicked on a video so fast
I was like how come it’s not playing? Oh…🙄
Absolutely love your channel. Love your German Shepherd companion. Look forward to following you.
Good to see you back!!!
Nice truck Greg! That should do it for you. Greg, I think when you are doing these you should bring a few backup items with you, like some food and water backup communications, and a couple of other things. just because you are showing us what to do doesn't mean you have to take a chance on not making it out alive. no need to put yourself through this every time, we will still learn. we are getting older and you never know what can happen when putting yourself through this stuff. we may handle it fine when we were younger but there is many things that can happen when we get older. protect yourself!
Yeah Greg ought to do an overnighter in an abandoned car!!! Love you Greg
Yes Greg, I did learn a few things about prior-oratizing the situation from this video! good stuff.
I really enjoyed the relaxing drone air shot with the chilly music at the end. Good content!
In all aspects of life, communication is of paramount importance. Really good basic awareness/knowledge conversation of pursuing outdoor adventures that far too few people ever even get close to talking about. Great video.
Greg, since finding your content I've fallen in love with the channel. Very informative, in fact a few things I put to practice myself after watching your guidance. Keep it up sir!
Greg I work outdoors on ZUG ISLAND 30 years and I survived in 52 below zero wind chill keeping the plant running and I know what survival is and your show is exactly what these spoiled rotten kids need to learn thanks for your time and your show!10 ⭐️’s to Greg and Finn!
Instructions unclear, got kicked out of the hiltons when I made a campfire in my hotel room
Nice 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😮
lmao
😂🤣😅
😂
I can see it in your eyes that you are a good man who suffers. I don't know what's hurting you but I wish you strength and peace of mind. Great video, hopefully I don't find myself in a survival situation.
I'm a simple man. Ovens puts out a video I click it and watch it.
What a great video!
This guy is a legend. Tough as they come. Doesn’t even bring gloves or a hat. He’s nuts 😂
Our bodies can withstand a lot and this guy shows it great inspiration
A true bushman.
As someone who has gone through a search and rescue looking for a loved one in the bush, I appreciate you speaking of the safety aspect. Not many bushcrafters discuss it on their videos, it's rather concerning.
Great video and yes part 2 and Hello Finn you are getting so big and beautiful ❤️🎉
The BEST shelter we've seen you build yet!! Looking forward to the part 2!
always learning from you
A classic Greg video! You love to see it 😍 much love from Augsburg, Germany
I always say my one item is a knife. I knew you were gonna go with the lighter. There’s some great common sense tips here. People go missing for these reasons you went over. Serious common sense that’s not as common now 🐸🍺🔪🔥
Your dog is awesome. He has a perfect look in the face. Add color everything. I would love to have a dog like that
This is gonna be a good video.
Yeah buddy 🐸
Greg is the most authentic person doing survival videos. I also appreciate that he loves German Shepherds, as do I, which are the best breed out there.
Absolutely one of the best! I learned from the best..... My Native American Grandfather . Not bragging just fact's. I can find water where most never could, I can track an ant over a rock, set a snare, fish, use a bow, and dress a buck with the best of them .not afraid to break a nail, as my Grandfather always told me I was born with a knife in my hand.
Wanna start a family? Lol
You forgot to say how humble you are too !
That would have been cool but think ur a little presumptuous about being the best I was taught hunting from age 6 an I don't claim to b best or better than anyone as it's survival not a damn competition but we'll done as most ladies wouldnt
@@georgeogilvie3560 you misunderstood I was referring to Greg being one of the best not I. My Native grandfather was by far greater than i.
@@summerrainsong7506 ah a see sorry bout my presuming u meant urself lol

I absolutely love your videos. Best bushcraft vids ever. Greetings from Czech Republic. 🔥🇨🇿
Greg im back watching your videos love all the way from England
Greg, this is the stuff we like. We want you to stay safe, but enjoy your survival videos.
Great video, Greg. I love to see you do a collaboration with Amos and Zach in a survival challenge using only cast off, materials to make everything necessary for survival. Like Alone meets junkyard wars.. then ather the challenge is over each person describes the tool and equipment that they made and why it would be useful..
How much money is zach taking from you? With your amount of subs you should be getting a brand new truck
He's not a materialistic man ! He's a practical man
@@gman33198exactly right & best way to be even when you are rich, nothing screams “validate me” more than unnecessary flash 😊
On god. I’ve always wondered that. Zac’s videos are so boring and kiddy-like. This guy is the OG and his videos don’t feel so scripted and edited.
The man has a net worth over 5 million. I don’t think it has anything to do with people stealing money . I think he prefers to live a simple life and not one to be changed by money like many are .
$10000 Ford ranger easily fixed in the bush or $60000 brand new whatever towed out of the bush. Practicality.
Can’t wait for Part2!! 🏕️
Definitively learned from your experience. Thanks for the tips! Greetings from Chile.
You had me at priororitizing😄 modern day mountain man, thank you this might save my life someday
One man's garbage is another man's treasure. There is no shame in making the best of a situation.
@ClickOnProfile6.. My cellphone is out of service at this time. Going through difficult times. Thank you.
Greg is the real deal, out there in the elements showing how it’s done 😎👍 I can empathize with you and your hurting back after sitting on the hard cold ground all night 😬
I took Greg's word, not only did I Buy a lighter, I got a feros rod, a compression fire stater even a mini magnifying glass, but I still need to work on my bow drill technique.
BIGFOOT !
Excellent job constructing the shelter. Well designed. Very fortunate to have the rocks available. A lot of hard work. 👍🌲
Nice job Greggy !
I still appreciate your survival and informational videos Greg. I know it must be a lot of work but your videos are still for the average Joe. Thanks for the adventures.
Excellent video Greg, best one yet❤
Thank you so much for sharing this information with us, cause I have read & learned stuff from books & passed down info , like if animals eat we can , so again thank you 💯👍🏻❤️🙏🏻🤠🇺🇲

Great content,Thanks man!
Thought I was watching a episode of Gold Rush for a second there 😀
Thanks Greg, love your vids. Hi from the Netherlands.
Also.. I have been watching your videos for years now since you started, but last year I could not.
Your vids got SO much better! The way you do things is so professional. Props man, keep it up! 😀
Nice Ranger! I got a red ‘98 ranger with the 3.0L V6 4x4. It’s a little rusty on the bottom but so is every vehicle that’s 20+ years old. I love it! Put some work into it, it needed ball joints and new stainless steel brake lines and new a cam shaft synchronizer. Other than that it’s a great light duty hunting truck.
Thanks Greg
You have taught me tons thanks greg
I’m impressed GREAT JOB ❤
Great stuff again Greg. Thank you.
Love watching Greg Ovens doing his thing.
Idk how he copes in the cold, Id be hibernating, either that or chasing the heat/summertime.
Lotsa love from Australia 😊
