I knew about the Y2K Bug years before it became widely known in the mainstream. I'm not an IT professional or extraordinarily tech savvy, but read Survivalist magazines since junior high and things of that sort. One time I mentioned it to a bunch of my sister's friends sometime around 94'. One of them went off on me what an idiot I was and how could that possibly be a real issue, people must be feverishly working to avoid it, or patch it. etc. I was like yeah well they better get hopping. Even with worldwide tight buttholes New Years Eve 1999 I still left the Wilderhood and visited Phoenix to go to a party he was at. I had forgotten mentioning it and his denial, roasting me yadda yadda. He hadn't; It was pretty funny when he brought it up and kinda gave me a little redemption. It wasn't so much a matter of "supposed," no one really knew or was sure. They didn't even start the full court press to remedy things until '98. The US alone spent over $600 billion.
As an example I remember when Microsoft released the patch for Windows 98 for the Y2K bug, it really wasn't something that that didn't need stressing about. Have you seen the computers used in ICBM facilities?

same^^ was confused by that on the wannacry video. apparently the "main" and "secondary" story are not directly connected? feels a bit weird. but maybe I am missing something
me neither i thought he was implying that the guy who created the my.doom was the same person who created the mega.io download service since the email with leaked information implying that the virus spreads using the computer to send emails to other computers and by making the emails dangerous to use was file share thus making people rely upon services like mega to upload files and only sharing the links contening the files but whem it changes to copyright issues so idk
Nobody: The Thumbnail for the video: Nightmare worthy The Actual video: Tells a sad story about how an abusive father caused his mother to move and tells about how amazing computers can be but how much they could corrode, essentially teaching a life lesson that while computer are some of the funnest things in the world they can easily make you insane.
Im almost certain that the thumbnail is just an artbreeder image in album mode. AI generated images tend to look pretty scary. In fact my pfp uses some of these images that I printed out to make a mixed media collage.
@@AshHeaven It was more or else that Disrupt read off the whole article, the wire asked politely to take it down since they disallowed him from ripping off from the article. He said on his community post it was good and was resolved.
The amount of time and quality put into this vidoe is incredible and underrated as hell. The only problem I have is that there's no answer about wtf happened with the main topic of this video, the MYDOOM virus, what happened with it later on? why was it created? etc
@@yaaaaay24 This^^ asked myself the same question on the wannacry video of this series. it apears as if the stories are not directly connected. as much as I like the presenting stile of disrupt, having two unrelated strories presented this way feels a bit weird. but idk if there is more behind that
Why have I just now been recommended this channel?!? The quality of the content and dramatic presentations are better than anything else I've seen and the STYLE! Your work is a breath of fresh air, thank you
@@AceLeach can you tell me if I’m correct. But the original video said that the virus was made by someone who was doing a job for someone on the deep web. An he didn’t wanna do it, since he knew that it would be use for bad things.
@@jarynh7800 That is an accurate summary. He switched to a "white hat" hacker at some point, but someone else blackmailed him more-or-less into creating the virus for him. Out of the thousands of RUclips videos that I've watched over the years, this is one of 4 that I've rewatched multiple times. All of them were Disrupt videos.
Turned the video on for some entertainment and accidentally learned about the history of a file sharing service I use all the time. This is a super cool series dude!
Great choice putting the Kim Dotcom story in here, I was one of the millions of MegaUpload users when I was a kid and use Mega to this day. Kim is a legend to me.
This channel is brilliant… You can tell a great deal of effort is put into every video & I’m glad RUclips is a home for content like Disrupt…. this is why the internet was created 👏
I'm rarely impressed by how well videos are done. I especially liked the meme inserted unexpectedly into the otherwise serious video said in a serious voice. The commodore introduction really makes me feel like a kid in those years who's seeing a screen like that for the first time. Bravo, sir. You got yourself a subscriber
Each video in this series talks about two unrelated stories. The mydoom story is one thing and the megaupload story is another, there's no connection. You get two stories for the price of one.
@@aloysiusdevadanderabercrombie8 that's very nice to do that but maybe he should acknowledge it somewhere so the viewers/listeners aren't completely confused. I was listening to this at work and was very interested in the virus story, and then at some point I'm like... Wait what does Kim Dotcom have to do with this? Wait why are the credits rolling? Did Kim and Mega create the virus and I missed something?
the second half of the story got removed from this video bc the author of the article he read from asked him to take it down. sorta silly to reupload it when half the story is missing but whatever. he replaced the second half with the megaupload part for some reason.
Born 1998... Copyrights, Limewire, MegaUpload, Call of Duty... This video gave me explanation of what I grew up around in my childhood... Amazing, amazing content..
The DisruptTv logo and the bumpers you have adds that feel of a full fledged tv channel and that ties in hand in hand with the amazing editing. Keep up the good work.
15:16 “he spares no expense” (quick clip from Jurassic Park where Hammond the brains behind the park explains he will spare no expense! The editing and writing on this channel are amazing.
honest review. I love the effort you put into these videos, not just this one ("IT's like I'm watching a documentary."). However, a particular thing that holds me back from ranking you as high up as, say, Aperture, is the *seemingly* separate stories, sorta breaking the mood or thought process going on my mind's background. I do get what you wanted to achieve here though, tying every loose end in the...end (still am not following the MY.DOOM virus transition to the megaempire, is this a video combining several other videos taken down or something?). This is hard to compare to Vsauce, who gives nuggets of cool and weird facts, which seldom have a link, but the overall topics of his content consists of just that - informational, but short tibbits of sciency stuff, whereas with this type of content (incredibly gripping to be honest), *you're telling a story.* It's probably better if you either reduce timeline jumps and/or perspective changes, or integrate them into the story (which, is so difficult I can't give an immediate example for) i doubt you didn't account for the weird pixel breaking of a lot of those transition shots (trippy ngl), but it doesn't look like an intentional design choice. if those are too persistent, perhaps because of RUclips videos' compression algorighm being drunk, i recommend doing something simpler:) youtube compression makes scenes where the whole screen has a lot going on look really bad. tl;dr i love your content and do in fact appreciate the incredible work you must've put in, just some ideas about how the video couldve been done. Perhaps I didn't get or appreciate cliffhangers like when the Mercedes crashed enough, oops:p on a lighter note...put some jokes in mann
I agree with the story switching but only in part. There are other disrupt tv videos that do the same but I find them less confusing/overwhelming... I'm not really sure why. As for the trippy transition effects (like video moshing) I'm pretty sure those are absolutely intentional and I really like it, so I disagree on that bit.
You remind me of the style that the people at adult swim do for the 10 second blurbs with their name in it during an ad break...but it's for a whole dang video. And your narration is great too!
I really think I can say this is definitively the best produced content on RUclips, period. I’m stunned every time at the effort and skill and it’s just...perfect every time. So entertaining, such a pleasure to watch, it’s like candy for my brain. It’s like a content flow state, the perfect amount of stimulation that keeps me from tabbing out and getting distracted with something else (as someone with ADHD). I hope you expand the content you create, you have real fucking talent. I cannot believe this is FREE.
I am so confused. It's supposed to be about a virus, but suddenly it's about a movie-theft thing? And then it just ends with no conclusion? I'm totally lost.
I legit though my computer sht it's self about 2:30 into the video until i realized it was just something in the video that proves the amount of editing and the amount of work put into this video is good.
id just like to say this is the first time I've watched a video where the annunciation was so clear that the auto-generated captions are accurate, and I thank you for that
You've put so much effort into this! Great job my good sir, I knew this story a bit but damn did the hole just got deeper. Brilliant page turning storytelling!
What makes these bugs so successful is the fact that most people simply cant resist the temptation of opening a file they know they should not be clicking on
I think people just had no sense of digital literacy, common sense today but Hindsight is 20/20. if dudes working at big tech companies realized that they could lose their cushy office job over clicking on a fake .txt file, I don’t think they would do it.
Most of the people would be sitting at their work desks, half dead due to the combination of the nature of their daily function, fluorescent lighting and recycled air. ….why not just keep clicking?
@@thermochemist I was very confused throughout this video. I thought it was going to be a backstory of the maker of the virus. Then, the years didn't add up anymore. I had to watch another video about the virus to verify that Kim had nothing to do with it. I was genuinely thinking I was just being dumb and failed to see the connection between te stories somehow.
@@thermochemist It was the first video I saw of this guy. I gotta say, there is something strangely entertaining about the bizarre editting of the video. The 2-stories-in-one feature might grow on me as well.

I kind of missed where the explanation of My.Doom went. I thought it would go full circle, but instead the story of My.Doom is left incomplete. I think we can intuit what is implied and I gather from the presentation that creator has never legally been found. at any rate, great quality production and creative measures as always.

@@Tee-ina-Skee-Mask I'm with you! Sorry I can't stand making little typos and stuff + "edited" so gotta correct and repost. No worries m8 we still have Y2K38 coming. Thank your lucky stars for John Titor. /s

Sooo, am I just dumb or did I miss the part where my.doom and mega are connected? I'm a bit confused, but this was a great watch still.
same^^ was confused by that on the wannacry video. apparently the "main" and "secondary" story are not directly connected? feels a bit weird. but maybe I am missing something
@Yettere Gaming So the whole main/my.doom part is worthless in this upload? That was just a waste of time...
He does 2 stories and splits them across the vid
Probably to keep people watching
me neither i thought he was implying that the guy who created the my.doom was the same person who created the mega.io download service since the email with leaked information implying that the virus spreads using the computer to send emails to other computers and by making the emails dangerous to use was file share thus making people rely upon services like mega to upload files and only sharing the links contening the files but whem it changes to copyright issues so idk
@Yettere Gaming no, the other story was also unrelated to mydoom
Nobody:
The Thumbnail for the video: Nightmare worthy
The Actual video: Tells a sad story about how an abusive father caused his mother to move and tells about how amazing computers can be but how much they could corrode, essentially teaching a life lesson that while computer are some of the funnest things in the world they can easily make you insane.
Almost the entire video is filler. It's fairly annoying when you click for the story in the title and get a filler video.

Yes I also very much enjoyed this video, but I’m a bit slow can someone explain to me how the virus and the story about Kim are related?

I’m so confused I thought the video was about my doom then in the middle he talks about megaupload
I'm in the same way
Why the video is called "MY.DOOM" but it talks about the mega upload service?
Each video in this series talks about two unrelated stories. The mydoom story is one thing and the megaupload story is another, there's no connection. You get two stories for the price of one.
@@aloysiusdevadanderabercrombie8 that's very nice to do that but maybe he should acknowledge it somewhere so the viewers/listeners aren't completely confused.
I was listening to this at work and was very interested in the virus story, and then at some point I'm like... Wait what does Kim Dotcom have to do with this? Wait why are the credits rolling? Did Kim and Mega create the virus and I missed something?
the second half of the story got removed from this video bc the author of the article he read from asked him to take it down. sorta silly to reupload it when half the story is missing but whatever. he replaced the second half with the megaupload part for some reason.

honest review. This is hard to compare to Vsauce, who gives nuggets of cool and weird facts, which seldom have a link, but the overall topics of his content consists of just that - informational, but short tibbits of sciency stuff, whereas with this type of content (incredibly gripping to be honest), *you're telling a story.* It's probably better if you either reduce timeline jumps and/or perspective changes, or integrate them into the story (which, is so difficult I can't give an immediate example for)
i doubt you didn't account for the weird pixel breaking of a lot of those transition shots (trippy ngl), but it doesn't look like an intentional design choice. if those are too persistent, perhaps because of RUclips videos' compression algorighm being drunk, i recommend doing something simpler:) youtube compression makes scenes where the whole screen has a lot going on look really bad.
tl;dr i love your content and do in fact appreciate the incredible work you must've put in, just some ideas about how the video couldve been done. Perhaps I didn't get or appreciate cliffhangers like when the Mercedes crashed enough, oops:p
on a lighter note...put some jokes in mann
I totally agree with you!
I agree with the story switching but only in part. There are other disrupt tv videos that do the same but I find them less confusing/overwhelming... I'm not really sure why.
As for the trippy transition effects (like video moshing) I'm pretty sure those are absolutely intentional and I really like it, so I disagree on that bit.
ngl i agree i found this video really confusing it just randomly switched to being a video about some dude who made mega
This one was a little bit better before the secondary story got replaced, to be honest.
