He said there were no Shias during the Prophets SAW time.
There are many Shia and Sunni hadith where Muhammad SAW said that Ali and his Shia(followers) would be successful in the Afterlife which means that certai people were referred to by Muhammad SAW as the Shia of Ali.
It is also worth noting that Sunni, Salafi or Sufi were not mentioned in the Quran, but Shia is mentioned in more than a few places.
Ibrahim AS is called the Shia of Nuh AS and there is also the man who is identified as a Shia of Musa.
If any group fits the definition it must be the 12er Jaafari Shia since they fit the description better than any other group.

It was narrated from Mu’aawiyah ibn Abi Sufyaan (may Allaah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) stood among us and said: “Those who came before you of the people of the Book split into seventy-two sects, and this ummah will split into seventy-three: seventy-two in Hell and one in Paradise, and that is the jamaa’ah (main body of Muslims).”
Narrated by Abu Dawood (4597) and others; classed as saheeh by al-Haakim (1/128)

@Yusuf Lewis did the prophet saw call any Muslim a kafir ?? Did the Sahab call any Muslim a kafir ?? In fact when the prophet saw did a survey in madina to count how many Muslims are there he said who ever claims to be a Muslim. He didn't say who ever prays or who ever gives zakat. He just said who ever claims they're a Muslim count him in. Now look at the salafi movement today and what they say: Shia? KAFIR. Sufi KAFIR. ahmadi ? KAFIR. Subha Allah the truth is soo clearer than the sun. May Allah forgive all that believe in him and his messenger and guide them and guide all the none Muslims to Islam.
