This was one of the best electrolysis how to videos I have seen. Thank you for posting.

I have done this numerous times, with mostly good results. Nickels are tough, they usually come out brown. I have done a lot of wheat pennies, and what I end up doing when I'm done is putting some baking soda on the coin and rubbing them between my fingers, then rinsing them off. It takes that black film off that you see when you pull them out. Note however, you should NEVER do this to a coin that you think might be rare or valuable, it will destroy the value of that coin! But if you just want to clean up a coin or try to see the date, it's a great way to clean them up. I've also used it on tokens and some relics in the past. as well. Great tutorial, would love to see another after you've cleaned up some things to see how they turned out. GL and HH on your next hunt!

Thanks Tracy - can't wait to try it on the shield/badge I found with you last weekend!

Interesting demo Tracy! I also seen where you could wrap tin foil in a ceramic bowl , add baking soda then very hot water, add your coin and one more table spoon of baking soda to the top side of the coin (cover with water) and after a few minutes - a silver coin looks almost in mint state in shininess! 👍

The easiest way to know which wire attaches to the coin is to put both clips in the water without touching and the one that fizzes is the one to attach to coin. Thanks for sharing.

    Hi:
Great video, one suggestion, put electrical shrink wrap using heat to melt it, makes a great insulator.

I've heard that electrolysis removes the patina, a natural coating from the coin, and can cause pits to form, all of which remove the value of the coin. Maybe this method should be utilized for coins that already have a low value to them? Good vide though, thanks for sharing.

I have would only use it on a coin that I can't otherwise identify so it's pretty much toasted

If the coin is that cruddy and corroded electrolysis is NOT going to reduce the value any more.

Ok. Three years ago but… nickels always come out looking like copper. DON’T EVER use stainless steel for this. It makes a toxic mess think hexachromium whatever that was in that Erin Brokavitch movie.

Take a toothpick, and gently scrape off that thick crap.
