- Documentary looking at the amazing Battle of Sagrajas, or Zalaca, an epic clash between the Almoravids under Yusuf ibn-Tashfin and Alfonso VI leading the Kingdom of León-Castile in Spain. On October 23, 1086, the Leonese and Almoravid armies faced off in battle at Sagrajas, northeast of Badajoz. Alfonso’s army contained roughly 2,500 men, composed of about 750 heavy cavalry, plus some 750 less-experienced light cavalry, and around 1,000 foot soldiers. The Almoravid coalition outnumbered the Leonese forces by roughly three-to-one; in total, Yusuf had an army of around 7,500, made up of Almoravid forces as well as taifa troops from the Iberian Moorish states. Though he was greatly outnumbered, Alfonso VI trusted in the strength of his heavy cavalry, which he believed could break the enemy formation and deliver a quick victory.

Is Sagrajas the same as Zalaca?
I like how you pronounce names and places correctly. It is annoying to hear someone stumble over words. Like gaol being pronounced as gall :):)
Spanish people call it sagrajas while moroccans and arabs calls it zallaqa
that's true
Zalaca is in arab means the slide Because the fighters were slipping from the blood
@@محمدالمغربي-ي6ش no
Zalaca is the name of the location of the battle “Now”
It's a figurative idea. There wasn't so much blood that people were slipping and sliding.
thanx for doing this video .

😂😂😂🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦
you know Mauritania was an ancient kingdom in northwest Africa, encompassing regions of modern-day Morocco and Algeria. Although it shares a name with the modern country of Mauritania, they do not overlap. Your country name was taken from this kingdom and France named you the same name. go read about it

2500? It's not even half the Roman legion XD
Yes, armies were far smaller in this period than during the height of the Roman era.
@@mhm8113 There’s no way in hell Leon could field an army 30k strong. The Roman Empire in Constantinople during this time could barely field an army that large. 2,500 is way, way more in the ballpark
@@Zakariya3603 There is zero chance they had 80k, I’m sorry. Alfonso rushed over to Sagrajas straight from Zaragoza. It had to be mostly horses. Most armies in this time were a couple thousand horse, a few thousand foot. If he mostly brought horse, 2500 sounds about right. France is A LOT more populated than Leon was. Leon had a tiny population. They were great warriors, but they had a very small population. Probably 1/10th of France, if that.
@@judsonwall8615 80k was impossible for an army in this period, even for the Muslims, who had the largest armies by far during this period. There is absolutely no chance that either army was anywhere close to that large during this battle. Historians agree that Alfonso had around 2500 men at this battle, while the Almoravids and their allies came to about three times that, around 7500.
