I'm a huge fan of Great Lakes freighters, how have I never heard of her before??

The tug/barge combos don’t get the same love as the self propelled vessels do.
Check out the other videos on the channel, the views help me a great deal!

@@PereMarquette1223 for sure, I knew of the Dorthy Ann, VanEnlk, both Mckees, and G.L. but not this one!

@@PereMarquette1223 I was on the Racine beach yesterday and saw the Olive but I was having a hard time making out the silhouette. Thought it was the Robert S Pearson.

@@lifevest1 Rand, aka Lower Lakes has at least 3 ATB’s that they operate. Two are converted barges the other is purpose built.
Besides the Dorothy Ann, Interlake also operates the PM 41 / Undaunted. The larges tug barge in the world is the Presque Isle, and she’s with the Great Lakes Fleet. Most of the cement carrier fleet are now tug barges that are either purpose built or converted. St. Mary’s has around 3 tug barges and Holcim has around the same number as well.

How can the tug captain see where they are going ? What happens if the wind catches the barge and blows it sideways ?

The barge is connected to the tug with a coupling that keeps it connected to the tug. There are also thrusters in the bow of the tug to assist with steering.
The tug itself if you study it further has a raised wheelhouse for improved visibility over the barge and surrounding areas. They are not pushing blindly.

How many people work on her? I’m assuming sleeping quarters are just in the tug? Just can’t picture what it would be like to be on her tug. 😊

I believe it’s between 15-20 crew on these, I don’t have an approximate number
