I have plenty of problems with how Ahsoka handled Thrawn, but him being supportive of the Empire on the surface and hiding his allegiance to the Chiss isn't one of them. This explanation that Zahn gives is actually the exact same reason Thrawn did the same in the original EU. Contrary to what newer casual canon fans who have only read or even just heard about the OG Thrawn Trilogy think, Zahn does write Thrawn as the same character in all his works. The Hand of Thrawn Duology had already planted the seeds of his true loyalty to the Ascendancy and his ulterior motives. This is further explored in Survivor's Quest and Outbound Flight. EU Thrawn was already both a great villain and a complex character before the new canon. I do hope they get Timothy Zahn as an official writer/co-writer, creative consultant and/or executive producer of some sort in the future. Ahsoka failed to really show Thrawn as the greatest military mind and leader in the Star Wars galaxy to new fans. He didn't do as bad as most say, but he definitely should've done so much better. Lars Mikkelson does do an excellent job acting-wise, we see his charisma, personality and how he inspires loyalty in his men. And yeah he does do a background check and some surface level analysis on Ahsoka, but none of the more complex psychological, Sherlock/Moriarty level rational thinking he does or his passion for art, history and culture which he uses to study his opponents.
Filony and Company need to change their story to better reflect the masterpiece that Timothy Zahn made, not the other way around. If I were Zahn, Disney would have a lawsuit on it's hands. I still have the 1990s hardcovers, and I'm not giving them up.

I was so disappointed. This pissed me off big time. Filoni doesn't know shit about Thrawn. And Zahn can't fix it. They fucked up Thrawn and Zahn knows it.
None of Thrawn's crew or soldiers are from his homeworld. He's not going to foster deep loyalty from storm trooper with a slogan like "For Chiss!" or even by talking about Chiss. To keep his crew motivated to survive in the hostile alien galaxy, building up a cultlike loyalty to the fundamental concept of "The Empire" was a reasonable path to take. In Thrawn's mind the abstraction of "The Empire" still has to do with his ultimate goals of defending the Galaxy (and thus his homeworld) from future invasion, and not loyalty to Palpatine or the Sith.
Problem is we don't get any glimpse at his actual motivation in this show. The only proof we've gotten that he cares about his people most is from people who didn't even write the show he was introduced in.

I'm hoping that Naboo's idea will be used, I thought that would be the best way to redeem Thrawn -- take the remnant out to Chiss space and have them fight the Grysk. It would make everything right and not mess up canon. If there is now going to be inserted into the New Republic timeline a big war between Thrawn and the remnant versus the New Republic, it makes The Force Awakens even more off as that movie never mentioned anything about a major war taking place between the fall of the Empire and the time frame of the sequels. Yet I fear that this idiotic direction is where Filoni is heading. I'm a fan of Filoni, but what he is doing to Thrawn (if he goes the Thrawn as the new Emperor route)is nothing but stupid. I'm reading the Thrawn Ascendancy books right now, I really don't see Thrawn being able to evaluate the potentials of reviving the Empire before returning to the actual SW galaxy. The Imperial Remnant might not be too keen on having a blue-skinned alien leading them as Thrawn received more than a bit of prejudice while serving Palpatine. Since the New Republic managed to defeat the Empire, why would he assume the remnant would be able to be QUICKLY revitalized (remember, Thrawn has been away for at least 9 years and he doesn't know what is going on in the Ascendancy during that time. For all he knows, the Grysk may have already overwhelmed them)and that they would be willing to fight against the Grysk. It is clear that poor Timothy Zahn is merely trying to do damage control for Filoni's reckless disregard for Zahn's well crafted stories. It is really sickening to see that Filoni was handed the backstory for something great with Thrawn, and instead of making an epic tale, instead he went for the pathetic and easy Thrawn-wants-to-be-Emperor route like any generic Imperial villain. Thrawn would have made a much better Anti-Hero than he would a villain. And, what will happen to the Ascendancy when Thrawn is defeated by the New Republic? The Grysk will simply destroy the Ascendancy and Thrawn will go down in Chiss history as one of the biggest failures. Very, very sad, and all due to Filoni's arrogance and/or Kennedy's determination to made watered down SW movies that are politically correct before anything else (such as having a good storyline).

It’s a complete travesty we didn’t get a single mention of the Chiss in this show. Mind you we didn’t get a lot of time for that to happen, so maybe in the future. But Thrawn’s motives ALWAYS focused on the safety of his people. He was only loyal to the Empire so that he could either topple it, or use it as a weapon against the Grysk. I think Timothy Zahn is trying to justify the writers of the show shaping and molding Thrawn to their needs to fit the story instead of using the established canon and source material.
He is a chiss. he is not searching to destroy his own people. The Yuzang are the enemies.😛
@@danielschoch4881 *Grysk
@@danielschoch4881 and I think it’s a well known thing that the Grysk are a stand in for the Vong in the new canon.
Dude for me this is so easy. He said long live the empire because he cant let people know he’s secretly loyal to the chiss. It would blow his cover
@@kiki42719 what would be the consequences if they did know. I don’t think anyone who was working with/for him personally cares about the empire. The nightsisters to be sure. Interesting thought, but I think they’re just trying to pretend Zahns books and trilogies don’t exist. Typical Filoni
Mr. Zahn's words can kind of explain a plausible reason for Thrawn's so-called loyalty to the Empire, but it doesn't address how stupid his military tactics and decision making were. Thrawn was just terribly written in Ahsoka, and Zhan is being diplomatic.
Thrawn: "I was only helping the Empire because..."
Mussolini: "I was only helping The Third Reich because..."
Hirohito: "I only allied with the Third Reich because..."
This kind of logic is why I hate the EU.
Read the room pal.
The fact that Timothy has to reason Thrawns actions in Ahsoka just shows how poorly written the series was.
More like shows what an incompetent buffoon this overrated hack is and how blind his fans are. It's bloody obvious why Thrawn's not talking about the chiss: he is surrounded by imperial soldiers and officers, his return to the chiss is conditional on first returning to the Empire alive. He can't go around telling them, that he doesn't give a cr*p about them, and they are just a "means to an end".
Not that I particularly care. Thrawn was always a trash Villain Sue, from an incredibly trashy series, that's protected by rosetinted nostalgia goggles thicker than a Death Star.
Thrawn in Ashoka was boring…and Thrawn shouldn’t ever be boring
Just another example of how everybody else has to fix Filoni’s terrible writing.
How do you mean "fix"? He doesn't own the character anymore and his opinion of the character means as much as my opinion which is jack squat.
Ummmm excuse me but this pathetic version of thrawn is motivated by reading the script.
I understand why Zahn is trying to fix this but the problem is Filoni screwed up by not bringing up the matter of the Chiss Ascendancy at all in the show. Sadly, it looks like just another attempt to fix plot holes after the fact, which has plagued Star Wars in the Disney era.
i'm sorry, theres two thrawns running around...... unfortunatly. if the grysk dont show up soon, then its another adaption/remake of thrawns og trilogy... if the grysk dont show up in skeleton crew......
Thrawn was always an overrated trash character, from an overrated trash novel series, protected by rosetinted nostalgia goggles thicker than the Death Star's diameter. I read the Thrawn-trilogy when I was 13, before I became a hardcore fan of the Star Wars movies, and even then, I thought "this guy doesn't understand a thing about Lucas's movies".
