I've been playing the ocarina since 2016; I picked a $20 seedpod from Amazon (blue with little cracks in the glaze) and it sounded amazing. I played it for my Chinese World Music Class-- my presentation was on ocarinas, which are an instrument similar to the Chinese Xun. The difference between the ocarina and the Chinese Xun is that the Chinese Xun is shaped like a pot with a hole at the top and has no fipple- or mouthpiece. The ocarina has a tube-like structure called the fipple, which you put your mouth on and blow into. There are many different shapes of the ocarina, and different sonic structures-- bass, soprano, tenor. Seedpod refers to the English structure, which has four to six holes and is shaped like a "seedpod". The sweet potato variety is oblong, and the standard has anywhere between 4??? (6) to *twelve* and "ocarina" means "little goose" in Italian-- which refers to the ocarina's shape, which looks reminiscent of a sweet potato or a goose's head and neck. Sweet potato ocarinas can have multiple chambers, which extends the ocarina's range. Some ocarinas are made from ceramic, plastic, metal, and can be homemade from a variety of materials-- they can also be made from purple clay, which is special because it absorbs moisture which can make the ocarina sound better over time (taken from the STL website). The ocarina originated in Aztec culture (as little clay whistles), and were made into the sweet potato shape much later in Italy. They were also taken along by soldiers in WWI and issued in WWII as moral support. They became popular in Japan, and were introduced into mainstream American culture by the game "Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time". The Chinese Xun dates back 7,000 years ago. There you go! That's what I can remember from the presentation!

I play the ocarina as well and I love the way it sounds with my singing bowl too. Goes good with a didgeridoo I have gotten one yet but one day. Tribal drumming is good with the ocarina as my husband drums and I use the ocarina the kids like to work with the singing bowls it's all so relaxing and just lifts ur spirits and grounds u at the same time

Just enjoy the sound and work at getting clear single notes. Nobody usually starts an instrument as a master. When I began guitar, I had a hard time at first just tuning it by myself. It was before electronic tuners and phone apps. I had a tuning fork that was an A note. I persisted despite a few broken strings and got good at it. Then came building callouses and playing clear notes. Then chords. After a year of practicing 30 minutes a day, and meeting Ed Bennett, who taught me, I got good enough to play publicly. So don't give up. Take your time. Find the little victories. Remember, it is for your fun and enjoyment.
