my sorceress is descended from a green dragon who enslaved an entire village of elves because he's a dragon.
he would usually play nice and protects the land from invaders, but when someone in the village displeased him, he basically walked into town and performed heavy amounts of probably not consensual coitus with one of their maidens, often with the whole village watching, to teach them a lesson.
the ones who survived the process sometimes ended up giving birth to half dragons, the rest he ate.

I like to write white dragons as forces of nature, that they're like the wendigo spirit in North American indigenous mythology. Their very presence creates blizzards, and delays spring, and brings winter early. The winters become colder, and animals become desperate and hungry, attacking people more often. People turn to banditry or flee the lands, which means people are out in the open more, leaving them vulnerable to dragon attacks.
In general, I think dragons are at their best when it isn't just that they're powerful, but they affect the lands around them. I think making them animalistic sets them up perfectly to be fucking with nature.

An easier way to remember how all the different chromatic dragons function is to remember that the are all based on 80's movie high school villain stereotypes.
Red Dragons are the *Jocks:* Athletic and powerful they fight to be the alphas of any environments they happen to be in. Extremely prideful and rather hot tempered, they are usually at the top of the class totem-pole.
Blue Dragons are the *Gang Leader:* Not as physically powerful as the Jock, but might still win in a fight as they fight dirty and would bring their minions along to help/be meat shields.
Green Dragons are the *Gossip Queens:* They avoid direct confrontations, preferring to use rumors and slander to get their way. Likes it when people more powerful than them are tricked in to fighting one another. Rules through social influence.
Black Dragons are the *Goth/Columbine kids:* They are loners that hate everyone not themselves. And sometimes each other as well. Not terribly strong, but they might explode one day, disregard all danger and usher terrible and calculated violence at everyone around them.
White Dragons are that *feral kid* who eats crayons in the corner and kills small animals for fun. The fact that nor much is going on upstairs mean that he is an unpredictable agent of chaos. Might grudgingly act as a subordinate for one of the stronger dragons. Close to the bottom of the social totem-pole. But still someone who is too dangerous to bully.

If a black dragon made an instrument, it would be an array of keys each linked to a different torture device attacking a different creature, whose screams echo down pipes to the Dragon. Some torture examples are as such; A salt-covered Maul that when activated, slams into the crotch of a Troll and then rotates if the key is held, A valve that opens a vent to a constantly-brewing pot of well-made rabbit stew, which floats in front of the nose of a near-starved Hill giant when activated, an excruciating but nonlethal neurotoxin that drips into the open wound of a dire Worg when activated, and a dwarven father whose three daughters are shown to him, being tortured, when the key is held.
I didn't know that I was that imaginative.

    • @lordopotamus9109
      @lordopotamus9109 4 года назад +2

While a good start, instruments involving living medium are too temperamental. Sure, it's great for the first ten or so minutes, but then the acid needs to be refilled, the belts start to slip on the complicated mechanics, one of the "strings" has slipped from it's restraint, and your thundering giant has popped it's vocal chords before the the big climax of the composition, leading to an ever expanding field of dead notes on your instrument. For an instrument capable of performing a masterpiece composition of misery, The Organ is required.
Constructed from the remains of countless tortured victims and vile magic, The Organ's sound grows and evolves with the experience of it's owner. One set of keys connects to a set of rib-cages of various sizes, each nested within the other, with each key summoning a spectral bow string to be drawn across a rib, via the "Bone Fiddle" spell. Skulls adorn nearly every surface of The Organ, responding to the input of another set of keys, each one replaying it's own dying scream, reliably reproduced with "Magic Mouth". Stretching from the back of the horrid instrument, several covered tracks lead up and above the rest, depositing the decapitated heads of enemies, victims, or unruly minions at the top, each one wrapped in a helmet and sorted by size. Upon depression of a foot pedal, the corresponding head is subjected to the "Heat Metal" spell, causing it to burst with a percussive pop, the now empty space automagicly filled with the next helm. A more twisted conductor may even curse his torture chambers to permanently bind the souls of those that die within them to The Organ, preventing resurrection, so that they may play the notes of pain upon their victims very souls.

I suppose it wouldn't be too far out of character, right?
A dragon that cares about it's wealth might see the value of raising crops or herding animals for selling to lost, hungry adventurers.
After all, adventurers tend to carry lots of money, so why not exploit their greatest weakness, the need for food, to gain fabulous wealth?
Plus, people love polite customer service, a particularly silver-tongued dragon will make humans love buying from it, they'll come to them time and time again for good conversation and a well priced meal.
In fact, it's not too farfetched to place a dragon as the commercial or political head of a settlement of humans or elves or somesuch, after all, capitalism is the most effective means of consolidating wealth in one place, all a dragon has to do is make sure it goes to _them._

I used an ancient green dragon named Vyzathalon as a recurring NPC once. He lurked in a jungle with his massive extended family of sorcerous hybrids. The party never fully trusted him, even though he was offering them some of his children as soldiers for their war. When they finally learned he kidnapped a baby unicorn just to torment its mother, they barged in to kill him. They weren't even sure if they were strong enough to do it, but that didn't matter, they were *_going to kill this dragon._* He was fun, I like playing green dragons.

Black dragons prefer gold coins from fallen kingdoms for two major reasons: First, gold is acid-proof, so they can use their breath weapon in their treasure room without fear of corroding their loot, and second because they enjoy hoarding the wealth of nations that they themselves have outlived.

Grammatic Dragons occupy the LG-LN-LE spectrum. Their main shared ideals are that they hoard things with the main goal of collecting and spreading information, as well as defying the world's chaos.
Lawful Evil Grammatic Dragons are known as Prescriptivists, and see other beings as flawed and in need of "correction". They routinely kidnap members of other races and "re-educate" them to match their ideals and behaviour, and only let their captives return to their home if they agree to spread the dragon's ideology. Their hoards consist of old-fashioned, usually obsolete pieces of technology, which they insist are better than their modern counterparts and include the proper usage of in their re-education. Prescriptivists are stone-gray, with dull scales that allow them to blend in with rocky mountains and caves. Their breath petrifies the afflicted, much like the gaze of a basilisk or medusa. The resulting statue is then either eaten or kept as a decorative statue.
Lawful Neutral Grammatic Dragons are known as Descriptivists, and see other beings as strange and curious things to be studied and understood. Descriptivists treasure knowledge for its own sake, and collect informational items and artworks, such as scrolls, books, and paintings. Descriptivists understand that their hoard is not their physical items, but the ideas conveyed by them, and so will be content to part with any of it on the condition that they're provided an identical copy. Otherwise, the thief will simply not be allowed to leave until memorizing the wanted information or giving up. The color of a Descriptivist is unknown, as their scales are polished to a mirror sheen, reflecting their surroundings and making their silhouette nearly impossible to make out. Their breath rapidly deposits crystalline minerals, sealing away exits, and on direct contact, encasing the target in a thick clear gem.
Lawful Good Grammatic Dragons are known as Progressivists, and see other beings as valuable sources of order and progress that need to be protected from the world's inclination towards entropy. Progressivists seek out and "claim" a civilized settlement as their "hoard", thinking of each citizen as a small treasure to be protected against threats like invasions and natural disasters. Progressivists understand that broadening one's horizons is a good way to further spread ideas, as well as learn new ones, so they allow their treasures to leave their hoard under predetermined sets of conditions, such as returning for frequent visits, writing letters, and traveling with someone that will keep them safe. Progressivists are a wide range of freckled colors, as their scales are opalescent and refract light like prisms. Their breath lays down a thin frost of sharp crystal shards, either onto their treasures as protective armor or onto the ground as area-denial caltrops.

In my first campaign of D&D 3.5, we were tasked by the guild to convince a particularly strong druid circle to not raze a city to the ground for its rulers' destruction of nature. The circle was indifferent to everything except the preservation of their domain.
About 2 sessions or so before finishing the campaign, after surviving a kraken fight on a ship destined for a village close to the forest, getting ambushed and barely surviving a bunch of redcaps, getting tricked by some fey in a cave to a riddle fight and receiving a cursed ring as a reward that turned any non-fey originating race to a tree (luckily I was a half-elf, so only something treant-like), and ingesting hallucinogenic shrooms with a bunch of anthropomorphic druids, our druid rolled a 1 on his d100 for the random encounter.
Out comes this ancient green dragon. It was my first ever game so I knew fuck-all; I thought we'd get TPK'd. Our DM was very experienced so I trusted him not to do that. Instead, after asking us about our mission, the dragon proceeds to use some spells to convince half the party to kill the druid circle we were meant to convince (or you know, attempt to and die horribly in the process). Sadly I wasn't there for the last session and I couldn't witness the outcome :(

Like, Blue Dragons that establish kingdoms as thunder tyrants and take pride in their people's wellbeing and prosperity under their rule is such a fun dynamic to play with in a game. In my settings, outside of chromatic dragons that were raised by non-dragons or chromatic dragons that through exceptional circumstances developed friendships with good beings, Blue Dragons are the only ones that can eventually slip in to Lawful Good on their own due to developing attachments to their subjects and eventually (over a thousand or so years) empathy and sympathy. I have a Blue Dragon paladin that has a giant set of magical armor and a greatsword they fight with, that rules over a mighty kingdom and draws their paladin powers from their conviction to protect their people.
