    *Ya gotta bring me along for one of these trips sometime.* The Hudson Line to Poughkeepsie is easily the most beautiful commuter rail route in the United States, it's been covered before but would be excellent for a report!

    Good video but a few corrections are in order. Firstly, the M7s didn't replace the M3s, or if they did, only in really small numbers. Metro North got enough M7s to replace their aging New York Central era ACMU cars (Air Conditioned Multiple Units) and their Penn Central era M1A cars. Though the latter were almost indistinguishable from the M3s so there's legitimate room for confusion.
    Secondly, the M3s did get an interior overhaul in the past 10 years or so. Don't know if they'd had the faux-wood Formica paneling that some of the New Haven line cars had, but the seats were changed in color from the alternating navy blue and maroon (like on the New Haven line and M1/M3s on long island, to the lighter blue scheme you see there. They also got massive improvements to air conditioning so the windows were sealed.
    Thirdly, I'm less sure of this but I don't think it has been decided by Metro North what to replace the M3s with. I could be wrong and it may be that they've got options of the M9 model, but my last info was that Metro North was getting the M3s another refurbishment while they consider long term options.

    I like the double doors better. The first M 1 cars were similar to the subways R 44 & R 46. The doors don't chime ding dong like the subways but that whistle like bell when M 1 cars & beyond sound like. Glad you did this video. I love these rail cars a whole lot. 👍✅⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

    Double doors close faster, which reduces station dwell times. Hardly any commuter trains outside the US have single doors.

  • @russellgxy2905
    @russellgxy2905 Год назад +2

    My best guess of the double doors is a mix of
    - Dwell time: MNRR seems to favor frequency ofer capacity, seeing as it doesn't operate any bilevels and many of its non-electric trains have center doors on the cars
    - Subway Similarity: It seems the rounded ends are the only thing these old Metropolitans have with the Subway's now-oldest cars

    It is not confirmed if the M3As will be will replaced by the M9s 100%, they might replace them with M11s because the pandemic certainly delayed the possibility of M9s being possible and the M3As are in much better health than their younger counterpart M3s on the LIRR. They could last at least another 5 years or so

    • @LonestarTrips
      @LonestarTrips  2 года назад +5

      I had read that Metro North was in the process of restoring some of their M3As because of the pandemic delays, which would lead to them being replaced by M11s like you said. I may be misremembering that information, but I seem to remember hearing something like that.

However the M9AS for metro North are definitely gonna have the same exact design just like the M9 s just like the Long Island railroads R211as /TS just like the Brand New R262/as .

    M3as are honestly not that rare to find these days especially during rush hour but it will be sad to see them eventually get replaced by the m9a in the future. They are much better maintained than the LIRR counterpart m3. Although, the M3s were taken out of service for like almost 2 years now

    4:51, the interiors are not the same as when they were built. After the M7s were put into service, Metro-North changed their M3A's interior to match them. The LIRR's M3's have their original interior.

    3:23 - 3:24 and those people would be stupidly ignoring the 2006 memo saying it's allowed.
    Luckily, most of the people I encountered were cool - last time I got to ride the M2 prior to their retirement, for instance, even got some honks of the horn from the engineer!
    Once had a very hostile engineer back in 2009 whilst watching trains in Mamaroneck - even threatened to call the department of homeland security on me (I called his bluff, he was full of shit) - week later, the prick harassed me again, and I just snapped, replying "hey, kiss my ass." Not sorry, if someone is gonna be THAT hostile, respectfulness is off the table.

    • @LonestarTrips
      @LonestarTrips  2 года назад +5

      I was fairly certain I was allowed to have a camera up, but I didn't want any trouble, so I took it down when asked. But as far as hostile guards go, I didn't have any problems with them, and honestly, most people seemed as friendly as ever. I did, however, have an Amtrak guard argue with me about filming while I was at Princeton Junction, saying I wasn't allowed, which is ridiculous because it's public property, plus I was _techinically_ a ticketed passenger at the time, so I have no idea what is problem was.

    At 2:56 you said tell you why the M3A have double leaf doors because they were a joint order that was supposed to resemble the metro R44 and R46 order at the time it was the 60s and 70s they were plans to make expansions across the entire metro system and commuter system in between that with the interchanging lines between the metro system and commuter system so that LIRR and MNRR can operate from 42nd time Square station out to the suburbs and your daily N train coming from the City out Woodside but the stock market crash of 1975 mess any plan or that ever happening
