My cousin served in WWII and Korea as a fighter pilot. He had a desk job at the Pentagon in 1968 and volunteered for active duty. January 1969 he was shot down. MIA for 2 years and the POW for 5 total years. He was a man’s man and loved his Country. God Bless all veterans and may our country bless all our Vietnam Nam veterans.
I was with the 11th ACR in 69 with the 919th working as a combat engineer.... the same outfit as your dad was in. Our first mission after we arrived in country was clearing mines from the road between Blackhorse and Xuan Loc. A few months later they moved us up next to the Cambodian border near An Loc where I was shot. I'm sure your dad appreciated your respect. One thing most people who haven't experienced combat is the deep love you discover and experience for the men you're fighting beside. Wish I'd known your dad.
As a kid growing up in the ‘60’s & ‘70’s the Viet Nam War was on the tV news every night. “The Living Room War”. We lived in Champaign, IL, a college town. My Dad worked there. I remember the student protests, violent demonstrations burning campus town. I get really emotional for our men & women Viet Nam vets. The tail gunner tale “We came in low & hot, tail toward the trees” gets me, really gets me. I just saw a tribute to a local Viet Nam hero in Peoria, IL w/ pictures & quotes in the display @ The Riverfront Museum. Powerful words like, “Dump everything you’ve got & kill them all.” What as a commander of a platoon under siege he was calling in for air fire on the enemy so they could pull out of an ambush in the jungle. PTSD is real. I see it in my son in law while served in the Army 2008-10 in Iraq & Afghanistan. As the Viet Nam & Desert Wars vets age their psychological & physical needs amplify yet Congress cuts their medical funding. You better believe I’ll be voting those jerks out of office in my state. My Dad was a combat engineer in Xuan Loc 1971-1972. Some of his team mates were wounded or killed. But he said he was grateful in that his group had a clear mission and knew who and where the enemy were. He said once we knew that we were successful. Unfortunately for the U.S., it was not always clear who and where the enemy was.
Cassidy my dad did 3 tours in Vietnam as a combat engineer. He was never the same and died at 58 yo from horrible cancer. I was really proud of him. Thanks to your dad for his service. ❤🙌

My grandfather served in the Vietnam war in Combative Logistics and field supplies. He fought in multiple battles throughout both North and Southern Vietnam. He got injured from shrapnel due to a Vietnamese attack in 1973- he was brought back to the US and retired in his hometown Sheboygan Wisconsin.

I spent my tour of duty running convoys in a M543 wrecker from Saigon to chu chi , Tay NIngh, Plieku and Long Bingh. I also worked at the ammo dump at the 25 infantry division unloading ammunition and rockets from convoys when I was not on the road. At night I was sent to the where the Huey's airstrip was and pulled rotors, transmissions and turbines. I was sent out into the field and pulled power packs on motorized 155 cannons and any other type of vehicles that had engine problems. I was shot at by snippers and mortared whenever I had to spent the night out in the field on the road or in a rice patty. I had a U S serial number and was used like a red headed step child out of the five in our section. It was a very intense year for me because everyday I was on the go.

Thank You .We had two days to clear post and after I turned in my M16 ,Helmet, gas mask and anything that was issued to us when we reported to our duty station 4 APCS were hit that night outside of base camp and I was asked if I wanted to go out and retrieve them.They knew my orders had come in so I said no and I was expecting a problem but nothing came of it. My whole company had been called out to guard the bunker line and I didn't have a weapon if we were overrun. It was kind of scary since I had spent a whole year over there and I was coming home after my tour of duty.
I was on a fighter base in Thailand and we played this song over and over in the Airman's hall, we were all dreaming of getting back home, but not until our job was done.
What a video. Bringing back the confused state of my mind as a young man. Torn between patriotism and fear of the unknown. I was drafted and failed the physical, and still had torn feelings. What did I miss? All these years later I still feel like I didn't do my part. Beautiful song though. A time when the U.S. was almost, *ALMOST* as messed up as it is now.
I served in 1969 at the age of 20, with the army and got severely wounded, spending 8 months in hospitals and had multiple surgeries. Don't be too hard on yourself. It's not like you were a coward who didn't fight for his country. Failing a physical isn't your fault. Many of us guys who served in 'Nam wish we hadn't passed the physical.
@@postalinVT I'm still kicking at 75. I was born two months premature, and I'm in no hurry to leave. Got wounded in 'Nam at age 20, rolled over my car at age 22, lived through a horrific car accident when I was 5 years-old, and have suffered multiple concussions. Nothing has stopped me yet.

I know what you mean, but i think the reasons why they were there are a loot moore important. They sent kids to die in a jungle they didn't even know was there before all for nothing. Something that should not happen again.
This war ruined the joy of my childhood. We lost three boys on our block to this war. At 16 we had to register for the draft and take the physical and mental tests. At 18 you could be drafted. It was like Russian roulette, you never knew when your draft number would be called.

In my first job my boss was Marine brass in Vietnam, the stories I heard and pictures he showed me, you will not learn in any college history class about Vietnam. And we watched MASH in every lunch break.
I remember sitting at the kitchen table watching the evening news, I was 6 or 7 and the daily kill count came out on the news. My Mom always cried. I felt the same way watching the gulf war, Iraq war and the mess in Afghanistan.
The gulf war was different and so was Afghanistan. We cleaned house in those wars . I mean, we treated Iraq like they were a bunch of amateurs, same with afghanis

My grandpa was a vietnamese type 59 tank gunner in the early 1970s. He said that he and his team can die at anytime, so why not spend your last years of your life fighting for your country,doing everything you could for our felow south Vietnamese brothers and future generations. He said that his platoon was nearly destroyed by napalm bombs,but still not afraid to fight back,even though his tank was the last one standing. At that time, my grandma told me that when she was at her hometown rice field with her brothers and sisters,she felt thirsty and went on a break. Thats when she saw 2 fighter jets ( i bilieve f4s) streak past her,dropping their bombs.All her siblings died and and even more terrifiying,she watched her brother fly up into the sky because of the explosion.Also when the fighters flew through,she saw the american pilots face.If she wouldn't have taken that water break,then i have no clue if i am existing today. WAR IS HELL,i respect all soldiers,they dont want to go to war either,but if their country calls,their just doing what they are told.😥

I'm French, we fought each other also. All of this is so terrible, a terrible waste of lives. So many young people dying on both side, Vietnamese, French, American, Australian etc ... This is really sad. Now, it seems like this was so far from us, but we have to remember all these people who fought for their own cause, or for their duty. Yes, "War is Hell" said Sherman, an American general... I would never have the misfortune of knowing what it really is.

Our eldest brother, did 3 tours. " To save the buddies".. jumping out of helicopter and pulling the wounded buddies in. He was heroic. Maybe the war was a 🍕💩....but the survivors are heros.

Thank You .We had two days to clear post and after I turned in my M16 ,Helmet, gas mask and anything that was issued to us when we reported to our duty station 4 APCS were hit that night outside of base camp and I was asked if I wanted to go out and retrieve them.They knew my orders had come in so I said no and I was expecting a problem but nothing came of it. My whole company had been called out to guard the bunker line and I didn't have a weapon if we were overrun. It was kind of scary since I had spent a whole year over there and I was coming home after my tour of duty.

What a video. Bringing back the confused state of my mind as a young man. Torn between patriotism and fear of the unknown. I was drafted and failed the physical, and still had torn feelings. What did I miss? All these years later I still feel like I didn't do my part. Beautiful song though. A time when the U.S. was almost, *ALMOST* as messed up as it is now.
I served in 1969 at the age of 20, with the army and got severely wounded, spending 8 months in hospitals and had multiple surgeries. Don't be too hard on yourself. It's not like you were a coward who didn't fight for his country. Failing a physical isn't your fault. Many of us guys who served in 'Nam wish we hadn't passed the physical.

@@postalinVT I'm still kicking at 75. I was born two months premature, and I'm in no hurry to leave. Got wounded in 'Nam at age 20, rolled over my car at age 22, lived through a horrific car accident when I was 5 years-old, and have suffered multiple concussions. Nothing has stopped me yet.

I’m named for an uncle I never met that worked MACV-SOG for most of the war.
He died of long-term complications before I was born.
This war ruined the joy of my childhood. We lost three boys on our block to this war. At 16 we had to register for the draft and take the physical and mental tests. At 18 you could be drafted. It was like Russian roulette, you never knew when your draft number would be called.
It's called California Dreamin', yet it makes me feel like I'm in the jungles of Nam.
'66 Mama's and the Papa's, came out when I went to staging Bn. at Pendelton.

My dad's war was vietnam. I did 3 tours in the middle east. One to Iraq two to Afghanistan. The only thing we have in common is we both killed for nothing.

In my first job my boss was Marine brass in Vietnam, the stories I heard and pictures he showed me, you will not learn in any college history class about Vietnam. And we watched MASH in every lunch break.

I remember sitting at the kitchen table watching the evening news, I was 6 or 7 and the daily kill count came out on the news. My Mom always cried. I felt the same way watching the gulf war, Iraq war and the mess in Afghanistan.
The gulf war was different and so was Afghanistan. We cleaned house in those wars . I mean, we treated Iraq like they were a bunch of amateurs, same with afghanis

My grandpa was a vietnamese type 59 tank gunner in the early 1970s. He said that he and his team can die at anytime, so why not spend your last years of your life fighting for your country,doing everything you could for our felow south Vietnamese brothers and future generations. He said that his platoon was nearly destroyed by napalm bombs,but still not afraid to fight back,even though his tank was the last one standing.
At that time, my grandma told me that when she was at her hometown rice field with her brothers and sisters,she felt thirsty and went on a break. Thats when she saw 2 fighter jets ( i bilieve f4s) streak past her,dropping their bombs.All her siblings died and and even more terrifiying,she watched her brother fly up into the sky because of the explosion.Also when the fighters flew through,she saw the american pilots face.If she wouldn't have taken that water break,then i have no clue if i am existing today.

I'm French, we fought each other also. All of this is so terrible, a terrible waste of lives. So many young people dying on both side, Vietnamese, French, American, Australian etc ... This is really sad. Now, it seems like this was so far from us, but we have to remember all these people who fought for their own cause, or for their duty.

My uncle served with the 11th ACR in early 1972 after transferring from 2/5 Cavalry. He was Assistant Squadron XO with HHC 2nd Battalion 11th ACR came home with a Air Medal and The CIB
