There are moments when two artists that you wouldn't normally picture together combine and it works perfectly. Surgeon and Lady Starlight’s unlikely duo is one of those rare occurences.
Surgeon with his distinct brand of industrial techno, with a sprinkling of funk, swing, and dub-space, has been proving for years that hard can also be smart, sensuous, and danceable.
Coming from a distinctly different background, Lady Starlight has recently made the transition from killer heavy metal sets to spicing up world tours for mega-star Lady Gaga with her unique style of techno and 70’s glam.
It was at one of these shows where the unlikely combination was formed between the two, Surgeon having been caught off guard by Lady Starlight’s authentic techno set when attending the show with his wife. Even more surprising was Lady Starlight’s shout out to the techno legend as she left the stage - eventually leading to the unlikely duo combining forces to both confuse and delight fans on a series of live sets.
Needless to say, this is a moment not to be missed.
I am so stoned and going absolutely nuts on this set. This made me decide to write my philosophy master's thesis about industrial sounds and their sheer ability to create such a powerful and direct signal to your body which is unable to be recreated by other forms of media/live performance. Could do really well i think
...Love all that 'back-and-forth' communication between them during the set, especially when they're 'busting each other's chops' for on-stage mistakes:
1. 13:20 - She catches Surgeon skipping a beat, comes up to him and goes "...HA!!"
2. 14:07 - Lady Starlight brings in the Claps out of sync, so he goes up to her and "...HA!!!"

And this makes the whole set very real. I like imperfect sets

Tbh what you’re seeing in my opinion is extreme focus or what some call flow or in the zone. Often times people frown because their faces are relaxed when they are hyper focused.

What an amazing duo. Surgeon is my new synthesizer hero. It can't be that easy for two musicians on such advanced gear to play one song for so long and so seamlessly. I jam with other musicians and don't really dig it. These two are special.

SebastianItaly Well, probably they can't comprehend the fact dance music is created right there, from machines and devices they have never realised existed and played a big part in the creation and evolution of dance music. That live means more than just a person being on a stage in a big show centered around this person.
This isn't meant to be antagonistic or argumentative but I don't think the only reason people dislike this is because they don't understand what synths and drum machines are. And even if so, if it takes some kind of technical manual for you to demonstrate the value of your music, maybe it's a bit over expectant for the masses to enjoy it.
I produce and perform live electronic music myself and I find this rather boring as well. Am I missing something or is this an hour of a 4/4 kick with long form arps that slowly change filter and texture with some mildly changing upper percussion?
Kind of wondering why I bother putting any sort of dynamics in my music if this is all it takes to be one of the most well known techno producers in the world.
Matt Greer Music it's improvised techno, take it or leave it. Your music fine but it is neither.
The performances with Starlight are generally much more driving, although I think Surgeon's Freerotation/Dockyard improvised livesets are more interesting and have a lot more character to them when he's on his own (your videos are awesome by the way!)
Definitely true. Hence it's not made for the masses to enjoy. I've learned when it comes to music in the last 20 years, if the "masses" enjoy it I generally won't. But honestly, as someone that grew up in the rave scene with breaks and DnB in the late 90's, I have no idea why someone would need a manual to enjoy true techno. With or without the video, it's still solid techno...turn off the screen and listen. Most people have no idea what a standard DJ is doing most of the time, not sure how this is different. If someone disagrees, then they should go back to playing their now-mainstream EDM tracks. Enjoy, we won't be seeing that at Movement in Detroit anytime soon God willing.

You can love or hate Lady Ga Ga
But for me, choosing Surgeon and Lady Star Light to play an acid techno set as warm up... could have gone the other way - lady Ga Ga was influenced by her father's love of techno
This was a brave move, and no doubt doing this educated people to techno... I actually respect her more for this move... Surgeon (Anthony Child) is one of the most influential UK techno acts...
So this gig is a Lady Ga Ga concert ? That would explain the ‘tough crowd’ - less than half danciing and most of them with no rhythm. The peeps didn’t realise oh amazingly brilliant this set is and how talented these two are. Great to see Lady S and Surgeon really enjoying it, that in itself tells one how good it was.

This is very interesting. Can someone elaborate as to what Starlight is in charge of and what Surgeon is in charge of? I've seen a Live PA performance of Dynamix II years ago and could tell they weren't tag teaming like djs would when mixing but more of having separate roles but working in unison.
The kick appears to be coming consistently from Surgeon's modular (he seems to be on the MN Tempi module for clocking some key percussive elements). Otherwise the Octatrack is there too, running that classic techno ride sound at the least. Starlight has a Tanzbar and a MachineDrum amongst other stuff. So, both are in charge of techno. ;)

So what? It's not just about the bass drum you know? There are plenty of elements that can make a track sound original, fresh and creative. And if you listen carefully, there's not just one kick in the set.
