Eric is hands down my favorite drummer. Criminally underrated for sure! Cool to see this video. I’d love to see you guys do something with one of his signature snares if you can get your hands on one!
Agreed! I didn't realize that the headphones I used before I got the EPs were just kiiiilling the sound of my kick. I can hear a way clearer low end now
Being a life long Remo guy, I’ve also tried many other things but always go back to “home”. Experimenting is fun and this is right up my alley. I’ll order the pair and pick a snare to put it on and give it a whirl. Never know - maybe I’ll be as pleased as you appear to be and discover my new Holy Grail. Doubt it, but life is too short to to go through without smelling a few different roses. Thanks for the great video (as always).
I've had the same exact experience through my 35 years. I always go home to Remo. But - back in 1999 I started ordering Attack heads for the shop where I was teaching, and I really liked them. I had pretty much completely switched all my drum sets over. I really loved the 2 ply med. thin "Thin Skin" heads on my toms.
Only 10 seconds in and over my terrible cell phone speaker i could describe these as completely focused..great sounding and just may have to give these a try! thanks for the demo!
I tried the ToneRidge1 single ply batter over a the 5 mil snare side on a 14x6.5 Tama SLP walnut snare and it’s like a louder, more open version of this sound. These are great heads, don’t let the low price fool you!
Super fascinating! VERY curious about 5mil snare sides; I’ve never been super jazzed by any 2ply snare batter tbh, but I’ve never even THOUGHT to try one with a similarly thicker snare side 🤯
Those heads sound great and the batter looks intriguing. I'm going to check those out! I've experimented with the Remo Emperor snare side head, which, I guess, is a 5mil gauge, as well. I don't think it works on every snare or in every musical context, but it makes sense that you would also want a heavy (maybe pre-muffled) batter head to go along with it.
Well, I'm sold! Gonna replace the Powerstroke on my Acrolite for sure! I actually really like the low end wallop it gives on more subtle playing. Reminds me kind of recent Grizzly Bear type tone. Thanks for the review!
I didn’t get Eric Singer snare side heads for my back up snare, but I bought the $10 snare side heads. They don’t tune easy and need stretching. They do sound good after alot of work, but for $4 a piece more, get one of the big 3 American heads.
Justin we have many other options that you might dig more - the Singer head is one of the highest prices heads in the line up - there would be a far larger savings with practically every other model in the brand line up - thanks for the trying our product we do truly appreciate it 😊
In Europe, we have mostly Remo and Evans, Aquarian are not well distributed, Code Drumheads (UK made) are starting out... Attack would be more than welcome I think.
We would live to come to Europe - please tell your favorite music store or drum shop to reach out to us at sales@cardinalpercussion.com it’s the only way for us to get into your territory 😊
Those heads sound great. My main heads are Evans Genera dry, but might have to give these a try. Would have been nice to see these heads put on different snare drums. Wondering how they soon wood snares or 6 x 14?
So would this head combination be a good choice for big fat snare sounds when you still want an effective rimshot that will crack through a mix? Thanks for the video guys!
Hey Cody! LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!! So how do you compare this snare batter to an Evans HD Dry. I've not yet found another batter that cuts down all the overtones that drive me up the walls the way that the Evans does. And thanks for talking about the 5 mil reso head. It's good to know that you tried a 3 mil as well. Very cool.
Cody my main man thank you again brother another very informative video I've been using the two ply mylar Evans you know I got the red hydraulic and they are badass dude and I slipped them on my Birch DW's and they are no joke thanks Cody from San Francisco California thank you
Yep- that’s the sort of comparison that we’re saving for a dedicated series that covers comparing products rather than tunings and does so in a different format. We need more support to make this possible. Please consider joining our Patreon to help out and you’ll gain access to extra content like our exclusive cymbal series.
Loved it. Just wondering what you think about 2ply pinstripe heads from Wish. I was pleasantly surprised by them. Sound good in my garage without mic's. It would be interesting to hear them from your perspective. Thanks for all you do.
That sounds pretty amazing. I have always found the 5x14” Supra one of the most overrated drums in history and generally really dislike how they sound (I’ve owned a few) but with that head combination I have to admit it really sounds great. Looking forward to check these heads out.
sounds very well, but, honestly, Cody could tune some plastic shopping bags on the drums and they would sound good......... btw we don't have any distributor for Attack Drumheads in Germany anymore...........what a shame
How did you tune the reso head? I know you tend to tune each lug with a ruler, but do you know what the pitch of the head comes to? I keep experimenting, but I haven't settle on a good tuning with snare reso heads. I just got a Black Beauty and I'm trying to get the most out of it.
Fair question - honestly it varies every time I’m setting up a different drum (or the same drum for that matter), no prescription just using my ear for what I want to hear that day. -Cody
@@SoundsLikeADrum Do you have an idea of how many turns on each tension rod after leveling them? I've watched your snare tuning videos multiple times and I'll probably watch them again. Thanks for your help!
@@weeschwee bit of a late reply, but it’s not about how many turns per tension rod. Just take your time and match the pitchs of each lug for both heads, then when you have the batter in the place you want it, experiment tuning the snare side up or down in small increments while making sure it stays in tune. This goes for any drum. It doesn’t have to be more complex than that most of the time. Tuning is time consuming and takes practice and this is how I’ve become great at it. Try to discover what your drum sounds like at all the different intervals you can do. A few things specific to snare side heads you can try once the head is in tune is tightening all the outer lugs that aren’t next to the snare wires for a more articulate, snappier sound or loosening them for a sloshier, fatter sound. This method is especially good for large snare wires that may be harder to control the sustain of. Just use your ears like Cody said and experiment. All the information you will ever need is on this amazing channel basically 👍
@@benshone7703 thank you for your advice! I think it's a long journey to mastering drum tuning, but sometimes it's nice to have reference points. One thing I've learned about myself is that my ears can adjust to many different sounds. That can be helpful in some situations and bad in others. It's easy to lose perspective. So while it's good to be able to simply listen and tune accordingly, it's also nice to have reference points. I feel like reference points can also be a tool for learning. But everyone is different. I will take the knowledge you guys have provided and I will keep practicing.
Lol. That would sound interesting on an album. I’ve seen it, but it’s usually a kid asking advice about why his drum sounds terrible! Some new drummers just arent aware that a snare side head is a specialized item (or that shoelaces aren’t the same as snare cord 😂) Besides, everyone knows he used unicorn skin for the snare side, that’s why nobody can replicate his sound. Bonham used both Diplomat and Ambassador SNARE SIDE heads, which are 2 and 3 mils respectively. Hazy or clear. A coated Ambassador is a batter head, it’s 10 mils thick and coated, so it could never work as a snare side head. (It sounds like rocks in a can btw) Bonzo’s been gone 40 years... Still the most referenced drummer on the interweb, still inspiring legend, mythology, and misinformation!
@@SoundsLikeADrum It's an interview with Jeff Ocheltree and I simply remembered the details incorrectly. He said for recording he used coated ambassadors on the resonant side of his toms, not his snare. Shame on me.
Sounds Like A Drum, no. Haven’t tried these heads. Speaking as an engineer who runs a studio house kit. I recently recorded two brand new snare drums (Ludwig Venus, Yamaha Recording Custom Birch 14x8), on both I went from stock to Evans Heavyweight batter + 500 snare side. Through watching channels like yours, I was turned on to the Canopus brand of snare wires. I got 30’s for the Venus, 42 for the RC. The RC in particular, tuned down, with your wallet trick, kicked butt. Admittedly, the Evans are not the Attacks, but I think the secret ingredient might be those huge snare wires. What a Snr_Bt track! Perhaps a video on the topic? That house Ludwig of yours is amazing! Just curious to see what sort of transformation these types of snare wires would give. Thanks for the interesting topics :)

I generally always want an outer dot for durability. Is that an issue here for heavy hitters?
Would sound even better for epic heavy playing with a heavy shell like cast metal or stave.
