How Apple Makes So Much Money

Share

  • Published on Feb 12, 2026
  • Today, Apple is the third most valuable company in the world. Generating about 391 billion dollars in fiscal year 2024.
    But that’s total revenue. If you subtract their costs like research and development, employee salaries, materials, and manufacturing, Apple is left with 93.7 billion. Which is a 24% profit margin.
    But where does all that money come from? Well, the largest and most obvious source is iPhone sales.

      What is a fan?

    • @commentarysheep
      @commentarysheep 8 months ago +29

      Being a fan and/or user of Apple doesn’t mean you have to blindly follow their corporate stance.
      If you want better products from Apple, you HAVE to come up with criticism about certain things you don’t like about iPhones.
      And yes, I’m glad the iPhone has started gaining a lot of customisation options since iOS 16, USB-C and Android-like features (widgets, an app drawer, customisable Control Centre, sideloading and 3rd-party storefronts in the EU, etc.), but I’m also eager to criticise them for their intentionally horrible repair pipeline that wants you to just buy a new phone instead of fixing the old one, the removal of the headphone jack port (still hurts almost a decade later) and the laughing stock that Apple Intelligence is.

    • @SalzmanSoftware
      @SalzmanSoftware 8 months ago +17

      @commentarysheep I’m in the same boat. I use Apple stuff but am eager for regulatory pressure to force them to increase the quality of their software

    • @housepianist
      @housepianist 8 months ago +3

      I don’t see that logic at all. Even if you like a company doesn’t mean you like to praise every single thing they do, but you don’t have to have a “fuck Apple” mentality either. That kind of attitude tends to come from those who actually hate Apple and everything they do. That’s not the case here with AE. There are a number of fans, users, etc, of their products and services who are also critical of them too.

    Actually, you can still buy Apple products from third parties. While I imagine that most Apple sales occur at Apple Stores including their online store, their are still third party sellers like Best Buy and Walmart and even a few remaining independent retailers. Sure the independent Mac retailers market isn’t what it was in the 80s and 90s but it’s not nothing.

    Setting up Stores and looking after customers is what really cemented Apple as the consumer choice.
    Yes the hardware also had to be great but the peace of mind from knowing they will resolve your issue if something goes wrong ( eg they often replace devices if needed) keeps customers coming back for other products.
    The pc industry is notorious for junk quality and zero support. Same with Android phones. Apple stands for quality and support.

    I'm curious what percentage of Apple service revenue is directly tied to their device sales vs platform agnostic. My understanding is that Apple Music can be played on Android and Windows devices so if there was a slump in Apple hardware sales it wouldn't directly effect Apple Music revenue. However services tied to Apple devices would be adversely effected if for some reason there was a slump in hardware sales.

    it's like i'm forced to pay for extra storage that i don't need or f around a lot to get it back down to 200GB (i'm just shy of 300GB). that step up should be illegal - 200GB to 2TB, wtf

    Makes perfect sense, think of the car industry. The whole industry isn't about the car itself but about the resources you constantly pay for the vehicle, fuel, insurance, constant replacement of the battery, head lights, brake pads, windscreen wipers etc. The car is just a tool to get you to spend elsewhere.

    I’m going in my new penthouse apartment saying proper because I have to speak proper to my neighbors and the concierge and the desk clerk, so the only way for you to even enter the building for your new penthouse apartment is to say proper when you speak to the realtor, you have to speak proper the only way to live decently is to say proper Your level of proper is going to be defining factor on you achieving it
