I have an old single frequency FM radio up in storage right now. I got it about 20 years ago in Philadelphia. Mine was presented to businesses and had the station information screen printed on the plastic front. This radio was in a wood cabinet, and I didn't have any problem changing its frequency. There's one station I listen to here in Maine, and when this radio comes out of storage it will be tuned to my favorite FM station.
I had one of those back in the probably late 80s early 90s for KMOX 1120 that was given out or picked up from a St. Louis Cardinals game since they were the official radio station at the time. It had a slot on the back for a 9V battery and a power/volume adjustment. I used that thing for years to listen to the games. This brings back so many memories. Thank you for this!
@@ozzie_goat You joke but I've listened to a game all the way home from central MO (100+ miles away from StL) to Dallas (600+ miles from StL) without ever once dropping the station! I have one of these Bloomberg radios in the box too, although I lost the warranty card. Still turns on. Got it in my Christmas stocking from my grandfather.

I worked at Bloomberg a while back and these sorts of promotional items were pretty common around the office. I believe they were supposed to be handed out at trade shows and the like, but many employees had BB swag at their desks.

Not crystal controlled, as I was able to get inside and re-tune it to the station I wanted! Must have had a pretty decent AFC. No advertising on it - I always wondered whether it might have been made for a commercial setting such as a dentist's office. Sadly, it is long gone now.
That might have been a subscription service radio. Doctors offices and such subscribed to a commercial free elevator music type service for there waiting areas for a fee. They would get the type of receiver your describing. Believe it or not you could also get a white noise generator that would make it difficult to overhear conversations with clients in a adjacent room too! Radio has a lot of weird genres.

Hello Eric I remember awhile back we discussed high prices on Realistic RadioShack Radios, I finally got a Base radio out of Texas TRC 434 and it's like new even came with the Book out the door price $90 bucks, I vaguely remember the One channel Radios growing up I kinda like them. If each step was 10 khz that would work just fine and they could set any frequency using exactly the same design. I really wish you would do a video showing the insides in detail
I got a little tiny black pocket AM radio "Bloomberg Radio" for NY WBBR 1130. Obviously living far away from there it is just useless even though it works OK. I assume if you get inside you can retune it to something nearby. As it is not synthesized or anything expensive like that. I just got it out and put batts in and it gets a late night signal with the fine tuning but not certain where. Novelty item, unless you are a Bloomberg fan for some reason. I might see if I can modify it to one of the locals. With no tech data obviously.
OK I was actually getting 1140 on mine with the fine tuning fully CW from somewhere. Now I am getting sports at the other end of the fine tuning. Maybe it tunes plus or minus 10 khz(one channel) for fine tune. This is late at night without that intereference you got. Try it outside away from noise sources.
I seem to remember a 700 WLW radio shaped like a baseball or something. Not sure if it was a single channel or not. Really vague ,fussy memory, but I recall seeing it on a shelf at my friend's house in his dad's "pool table room" next to some signed baseballs back in the late 70s (maybe very early 80s).
A few years ago, a Local radio station in a major city TORONTO, attempted to send a ceramic mug with their logo TO EVERY PERSON IN THE CITY...I have no info on how many were sent out though. You should do a live stream or record a video where you go up on top of the mountain at night and see how many shortwave and regular am station you can pick up. Be interesting to see how many am stations you could pick up at night. At night I pick up 1200 woai in San Antonio 1510 I think in Nashville and another up in new York, and im down in south Carolina

YOU might need to plug headphone that is use as the antenna. but next time you go into town/city take it there might be a radio station that is broadcasting on that channel.
I bet this would go good with a low power AM transmitter like the ones they use at churches and things. You have a bunch of these cheap radios and tune the transmitter to them and for a few hundred yards everyone gets to listen in. Maybe for a museum or something.
This is got to be the most BRILLIANT advertising campaign ever imagined!!! Can you imagine a gas input on your car that only matches a gas pump at 1 brand of gas station.....!!!????
The postage would cost a lot more than the actual radio itself You literally could get 10000 Crystal single-channel AM radios made for well under a dollar each probably a quarter if that, so 2500 dollars and then pay someone to do door to door and drop them off If you found the local newspaper company and talk to the delivery drivers of which there's only a few that actually deliver all of the papers and pay them to deliver to each house they would do it cheaply Much cheaper than even bulk junk mail rate
This is a cool novelty item that I've never heard of and I'm older than you. Personally, I enjoy listening to AM Broadcast stations, especially at night. But having said that, there are gazillions of flea powered AM stations that are peppering the country that serve no useful purpose. And as such, they do not "serve the public interest". I wish that most of them would go away so that I could hear the 50 Kw giants across the country, especially California. But the FCC is making too much money off of the licensing fees so I'm sure that will never happen.
Interesting radio . With today’s technology it seems those radios could be made smaller and cheaper , look at the ATS-20 or the Raddy rf 160 It would be a great promotional product. , if internet hasn’t killed radio completely.
They did! I doubt your alone being in the dark about these as even in the heyday of AM/FM radio, they were not too common. More of a way for a station to really push listeners to their channel.
There are certain stations in the US called clear channels that are allowed to run a very high wattage so they can transmit far away- in order not to overpower stations on the same frequency they reduce power. That is the very simple answers- there is more to it.
The dial allows one to decide. A fixed frequency could be dangerous if the powers that be have a woke mindset, i.e. propaganda etc. Interesting piece of history however, Erik Aside - There is currently a 10k watt independent AM radio station In Santa Cruz which serves from Bakersfield Ca to the south up to the southern reaches of Sacramento Ca. Search - KSCO 1080 AM But I digress....
The VHF 1 watt business band radios were crystal Radios. They had 2 spots for the RX and TX crystals The really amazing thing that I discovered was that the crystals were not universal You would think that there would have been a common method used to build the circuit for the TX and RX so that the crystal would be identical no matter what radio it was plugged into just like the scanners whether it be a bearcat or AOR or ICOM, the 10 Channel or 4 channel scanners from way back when they used crystals they all used the same method and I'm guessing the same reference Crystal for the receive circuit and I remember each RadioShack would have a bunch of crystals usually about 20 or 30 crystals that had the frequencies for what was most popular in your area So upstate New York 155.370 155.340 155.400 155.445 155.680 158.730 158.775 155.715 46.42 46.48 46.50 Etc.. And you could special order any Crystal that you wanted and they would send a request and get the crystal made for you When I started buying old Crystal two-way radios made by ADI and GE and a few other companies and I wanted to replace the crystals to operate on the frequencies I was using after doing some research and this was pre-internet I finally found a company in New Jersey and I don't know if they actually made the crystals there or if they ordered them from overseas but they had all of the different specifications and they asked for the exact manufacturer and model and serial number and they explained that each manufacturer was different and each model was different and the Crystal the actual frequency was not the same for each different radio So if you needed to operate on 150.450 in a specific GE model they would have to make the crystal to resonate at the frequency to give you that based on the way the radio was designed and that same frequency would be different in another radio so you might have to Crystal's one for the GE that's actually 140.980 and the ADI might be 160.540 to give you the TX of 150.450 in both those radios It was really weird and I was dumbfounded that none of them though they should all use a standard method so the crystals would all work off 1 method A good example of when all the manufacturers did use the same method was for C band radio when satellite first came out They all used the L O of 5150 So whatever receiver you were using they all worked off of 5150 as the L.O. So all the receivers received on 950 to 1950 MHz But, for Ku, the different manufacturers use different LNB specs, so there were 6 different L.O.s and you had to program the receiver for the L.O. you had Very complicated and you see this all the time in business where they make all these different types for the same product like wiper blades there's six different ways to bleed can attach and you would think why in the world wouldn't they come up with a standard for everybody to use The same thing with wiring that here we use black white and green but every country uses a different color code Makes no sense I could understand back when the technology first comes out but after a couple years you would think everybody would standardized But they don't
First time I ever heard of this.

I wish that most of them would go away so that I could hear the 50 Kw giants across the country, especially California. But the FCC is making too much money off of the licensing fees so I'm sure that will never happen.
the FCC is all about the money-
first time hearing about thoose
For a while, they were everywhere. Now? No one is making these.
The tv station is still on but cable only
Cool!
Must have been a regional thing. Ive been around awhile and Ive never heard of these.
They are really cool. I grew up listening to this station
Bloomberg radio network is cool, but Bloomberg made his money with the "Bloomberg Terminal" One of the fastest way to get news and information.
- with fast access to news, data, unique insight and trading tools helping leading decision makers turn knowledge into action.
Interesting, Now I must research this! BBS era I assume?
Yes 1010 wins NY I'm In upstate NY Oswego county off the shores of lake Ontario
I remember listening to that back in the day.
At $15 to $25 each, I may grab a couple.
I say why not- fun little radio
Interesting radio . With today’s technology it seems those radios could be made smaller and cheaper , look at the ATS-20 or the Raddy rf 160 It would be a great promotional product. , if internet hasn’t killed radio completely.
I would rather listen to radio then half the crap that is on the internet
@@FarpointFarms Ya got that right !
Does anyone know of a pocket-sized radio that continuously scans through channels? Weird question, I know.
let me know if you find one
You can get an SDR dongle the size of a flash drive that can scan massive frequency ranges for cheap
@@tylerdean980 How? Where? I'm not a radio or technical person. I just want to buy something already built. Any suggestions? Thanks :)
I never knew these existed. Mind you, I am classed as a "millennial".
They did! I doubt your alone being in the dark about these as even in the heyday of AM/FM radio, they were not too common. More of a way for a station to really push listeners to their channel.
I tried "single channel promotional radio" and got too much of a variety. Remote control to t-shirts.
Me too. Came up with a lot of things, but nothing related to radio!
The best way to clean up battery contacts is with white vinegar and a Q-tip. Works great.
good tip- thanks
Why was the power of the AM station lower at night than during the day?
There are certain stations in the US called clear channels that are allowed to run a very high wattage so they can transmit far away- in order not to overpower stations on the same frequency they reduce power. That is the very simple answers- there is more to it.
Becauase signals propagate on AM further at night and there are often more than one station per frequency in the US.
Search for "Target Tuners" Eric
thanks for the tip
promotional radio
Thanks!
Eight and a half minutes before he opened the box. Worse than a woman! LOL
Sorry. Not part of the generation z "my attention span is 30 seconds" club. Maybe check out tic toc?
The dial allows one to decide.
A fixed frequency could be dangerous if the powers that be have a woke mindset, i.e.
propaganda etc.
Interesting piece of history however, Erik
Aside - There is currently a 10k watt independent AM radio station
In Santa Cruz which serves from Bakersfield Ca to the south up to the southern reaches of Sacramento Ca.
Search - KSCO 1080 AM
But I digress....
Sort of like Soviet Union did. They had a radio and speakers all over tuned to the propaganda radio, you heard that or nothing.
A agree, and I'll check out 1080!
Isn't that what US "News" looks like these days?
🤡
Single channel Bloomberg propaganda.
That is how many of those single channel radios were, more for advertising, but you can call it propaganda
The VHF 1 watt business band radios were crystal Radios.
They had 2 spots for the RX and TX crystals
The really amazing thing that I discovered was that the crystals were not universal
You would think that there would have been a common method used to build the circuit for the TX and RX so that the crystal would be identical no matter what radio it was plugged into just like the scanners whether it be a bearcat or AOR or ICOM, the 10 Channel or 4 channel scanners from way back when they used crystals they all used the same method and I'm guessing the same reference Crystal for the receive circuit and I remember each RadioShack would have a bunch of crystals usually about 20 or 30 crystals that had the frequencies for what was most popular in your area
So upstate New York
155.370
155.340
155.400
155.445
155.680
158.730
158.775
155.715
46.42
46.48
46.50
Etc..
And you could special order any Crystal that you wanted and they would send a request and get the crystal made for you
When I started buying old Crystal two-way radios made by ADI and GE and a few other companies and I wanted to replace the crystals to operate on the frequencies I was using after doing some research and this was pre-internet I finally found a company in New Jersey and I don't know if they actually made the crystals there or if they ordered them from overseas but they had all of the different specifications and they asked for the exact manufacturer and model and serial number and they explained that each manufacturer was different and each model was different and the Crystal the actual frequency was not the same for each different radio
So if you needed to operate on 150.450 in a specific GE model they would have to make the crystal to resonate at the frequency to give you that based on the way the radio was designed and that same frequency would be different in another radio so you might have to Crystal's one for the GE that's actually 140.980 and the ADI might be 160.540 to give you the TX of 150.450 in both those radios
It was really weird and I was dumbfounded that none of them though they should all use a standard method so the crystals would all work off 1 method
A good example of when all the manufacturers did use the same method was for C band radio when satellite first came out
They all used the L O of 5150
So whatever receiver you were using they all worked off of 5150 as the L.O.
So all the receivers received on 950 to 1950 MHz
But, for Ku, the different manufacturers use different LNB specs, so there were 6 different L.O.s and you had to program the receiver for the L.O. you had
Very complicated and you see this all the time in business where they make all these different types for the same product like wiper blades there's six different ways to bleed can attach and you would think why in the world wouldn't they come up with a standard for everybody to use
The same thing with wiring that here we use black white and green but every country uses a different color code
Makes no sense
I could understand back when the technology first comes out but after a couple years you would think everybody would standardized
But they don't
Thanks for the specs
"Fixed tuned radios" there were a lot of these given away for Christian radio stations. Search for that and you'll find lots. @farpointfarms
Thanks for the tip
