- Truck Driver Students! Our Backing Maneuver videos are short and easy to understand.
CDL instructor Atom Guinn explains both Parallel Parking maneuvers in under 6 minutes. All CDL students must perform a Parallel Parking maneuver during their CDL Skills Test. This video gives new students a few reference points to use while backing.

This video saved me and my classmates during our DMV Cdl testing a couple days ago. My instructors taught us to take the rear tandems and line them up against the cone. That technique caused four people from another school to fail on the parallel at the DMV testing site, because they were consider technically outside the line and would of hit the tractor beside them with their trailer. So while watching that class struggle to parallel, I remember watching your video on the parallel like I do everyday and I gathered my Classmates around to watch this video a couple times. We went 3/3 on the parallel and now we are all CDL certified. Thanks a million CDL COLLEGE !!! I learned so much while watching your videos and I will continue to do so on my trucking journey ✊🏿
Your comment is amazing, Pray4us! We had to pin it. Thank you for caring enough to introduce your classmates to our videos. You're a hero! Killer karma! Wishing you the best in your new career and stay safe out there.
Thanks for the vote for this technique. You have saved me ahead of time,
I most say these videos got me over the top my driving test is coming up and im ready respect from Baldwin park California
BEst Tuturial on YT hands down very straight forward and not confusing.
All your videos are helping me a lot I watched over and over since I don't have instructor Thank You 👍
this video is by far the best to the point parallel park video i've saw yet plus the cool tune at the beginning i'm going in for my CDL soon passed all my written tests first shot with videos like this i'll pass the skills test first shot also.
Awesome video! Helped me nail it 1st try!
The video and Birds side view really helps
I hope to said the same at the last comment. It save me!!
Before this vdeo i couldn't understand all these maniobrs. Thanks for your help!!
Awesome set of videos, man. Thank you. Having a tough time getting the backup maneuvers at the CDL school I'm attending.
hey atom, a lot of students are screaming for a alley dock video, hope you got one coming soon.
you have the Best videos on youtube.....bar none.
Hold on! Tell those folks to stop screaming as it is most unnecessary (not sure why I'm speaking this way).
Our Alley Dock video can be found here: ruclips.net/video/PqLEdFbCQa0/видео.html
Thanks again, 'Beats.
CDL College LLC Lol didn't mean screaming in a mean or negative way atom, but in a good and positive way, we really love your videos , we would never scream at you, maybe it was a poor word choice......my bad.
I got you the first time around. It's all good!
There is a Time and a place for screaming and when you can't find a decent Alley Dock explanation, screaming is appropriate.
If you guys have ANY questions about the Alley Dock after watching the video, hit me up. Peace!
This really helped me alot ...
great video can u do a alley dock plz
Testing in Alabama, we don't have to demonstrate this maneuver. But i still want to learn it in case i need to use it someday.
Many videos for Parallel and Offset Parking BUT No one is teaching """HOW TO FIX THE PROBLEM""" or """DO GOOD SETUP"""
That thing about steering to the right to go left only works in straight backing up instructors should stop teaching it like that because when it comes to backing in an alley or tight spot if you don't understand the relationship between trailer and tractor you're in trouble. When I just started learning straight backing, it was so easy for me I backed up through cones easily and for a good distance, The day my instructor said alley backing I always had to be pulling up to make corrections and couldn't understand why the trailer keeps coming around even after im steering in the direction that it's going to push it the other way. I sat down one day and thought about what was happening at the kingpin and 5th wheel and that's when it all came to me went back to training backing up the unit with no fear because I knew how it worked I knew how to set up and if I need corrections I know how to pull up so that I can correct the move. People Steering to the left to go right and right to go left get that out of your head.
Thank you that's the best video
Jony Boy: thank you for watching and commenting.
Excellent...
Thanks for watching and commenting, Rohit. Did it help?
Two keys to this are that you start out perfectly straight with the box and that your tractor and trailor are straight...if they are not you will either be to deep or to shallow
Very helpful thank u guys...
You're welcome!
Great vid
Hi, Tyler! Glad we could help with your training. Stay safe out there.
Does this apply for a much smaller trailer? In California they don't allow using a 53' trailer. We test using a pup trailer . Thanks
It's very helpful. Do you have a similar video for a Class B license? It is a bit different.
Hi Atom
Question please about straight line backing is it better to watch the drift over the lines and correct in the same side of the drift with a little correction and back to center ? Or it s better to watch the sides of the trailer if one side goes bigger I correct in the opposite site ? A little confused here attending school next week
Thanks a lot Mr Atom for your helpful videos
And also Can I use the brakes during the straight line backing to slow the combination a little more?
Good video can you do one on alley dock ?
I pointed out on my blindside I sat there and gave up because of the lack of practice I got
What if there are only 4 to 5 cones on that vertical or parallel line? Most schools only put certain cones there, so what else can be used as a reference point when backing diagonally to that line?
Confusing, Bruce. The side line is supposed to have 10 cones. The front and back lines should have 4 cones. Which lines are you referring to?
Thanks for your quick reply. Anyway, I was referring to that parallel parking, driver-side maneuvering. What if there are only 4 to 5 cones or less? Some schools don't provide enough cones to their training spaces, (boxes, or whatever you wanna call it). Any other reference point or ways I can use?
I would suggest using the back line of cones in the passenger mirror. If there are 4 cones on the back row, shoot for 2.5 to 3 cones (just like on the driver side parallel).
I was talking about the reference point that you mentioned, the 8th or 9th cone on the parallel line. You mentioned use the 8th or 9th cone as a reference point. You said, stop when you see that 8th or 9th cone, when the truck is already straight (diagonal and about halfway inside the box). Not all schools uses enough or 10 cones to cover the entire line of that box. I hope you understand what I'm really trying to say...thanks, by the way. I'm considering to go to your school, if only you are authorized or takes the GI Bill to pay my tuition, I could have been enrolled in your school already...:( I really like your guys method or ways of teaching, I think you guys are very professional and you stand out from the rest of these CDL schools or instructors...:)
Thanks, Bruce. What I typed earlier still holds.
If you don't have 10 cones on the side line, you can use the passenger side mirror to spot 2.5 to 3 cones on the back line.
Why do this? Because the length of the back line is 12 feet. The length of the side line is 85 feet. It's easier to work with 12 feet than 85.
I can't believe that some schools operate without a cone budget...
If this didn't help, let me know. Questions rock!
Will I get points deducted if I look out of my back window? If I need to?
Please do also Parallel - Left.
Both parallel sides are on this video
Can you redo this video with the volume louder, I want too save this video on my phone, thanks in advance
midnightpassion43 No. No we can’t. But you can clean the wax out of your ears. Thanks in advance. 🥴
@@grady1807 in stead of me cursing u out, I'm just going too say, God bless u
Good one
HARD LEFT, HARD RIGHT, BACK TIL STRAIGHT, HARD RIGHT , HARD LEFT
With the hard turns, will it jackknife? We doing skills in an sleeper Bert + 53ft box
No. You're only going to 45 degrees then stopping and straightening everything. Thanks, Sheila.
Thxs Adam for ur quick response. They instructor stated that hard turns will jackknife even with that angle
Patently absurd.@@sheilashelton4527
Very good vid
Hi I have a question this skills are for California dmv
California? Hmm. That state does EVERYTHING differently. I think we have had comments from Californians who have passed using this video. Thanks for watching, Carlos.
Thanks u hopefully I pass I have my appointment June 26
So if you're in a truck with a sleeper how do you know when the trailer is over one of the tractor Rails?
In the case of a sleeper, you could use the landing gear. Most students test in a day cab. Thanks!
The trucking school I am in is absolutely horrible, the instructors are awful. The way they explain things make no sense and then say we are not paying attention.
Many experts have no idea how to teach their expertise to others. Your situation sucks scrambled eggs. If you have any questions during training, we'll help you, Stargate. Hit us up right here on RUclips.
How about a 45 ft trailer?
Q
This is probably the most helpful video I have seen so far. Thank you!
i wish my former instructor would have taught me this method. i could have easily passed my CDL test.
Thank you, steelfan81.
steelfan81 Same here
This is the absolute best teaching method I appreciate this opportunity
Nice! Thank you so much, Sheila. We also have a 10-speed double clutching video that has helped MANY people. Watch it here: ruclips.net/video/z6AKaBeRNU8/видео.html. We like helping you our viewers.
Great video I am going to try this Friday. I used your technique for Alley Docking and it work perfectly. My instructor at school sucks horrible at explaining these maneuvers. Thank you 😊
We must go to the same school
Turning till the trailer corner is over the frame rail only works with a day cab and rear window.
If you have a sleeper unit than stop until you see 3 quarters of your landing gear like he says
This video helped me greatly. One thing to look out for that threw me off was, the truck I was driving had the rear trailer tandems slid all the way forward. Splitting the line with the tandems in this cases was putting me a little too deep in the box. I backed up until the rear tire just barely touched the line and it worked.
Black Keyz I'm dealing with spread excel plus I have long nose pete it take football field to turn so made some changes to work with my truck and trailer but this video helped me a lot infect I watched all other videos by CDL College.
Best video on RUclips just helped me pass I aced my road test & now have my CDLs thank u God
I think this video will help me greatly
If you have any questions about the maneuvers, hit us up right here in the comments section, Richard.
If box is on the right,
1. Hard Left 2. Hard right
3. Straight Back. 4. Hard Right.
5. Hard Left. 6. pull Forward.
@Cdlcollege
IN another video, while doing straight back up, the guy says to turn in the direction of where the trailer is veering off to. Ex: if in your right mirror you see the trailer going to much to the right line of cones, then turn your steering towards the right a little bit and come back to the center. Im confused with your video because you say the opposite? Thanks.
Now if I could only do it as easily as you described it! Thanks
Try to remember this formula: short pull forward, 2 turns, straight back, 2 turns. Steering left forces your trailer right and vice versa. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Best tutorial I have seen, makes me want to drive trucks right now
Nice! Flag one down on the highway, Ryan. Hop in and parallel park that sucker into oncoming traffic. Just for fun! Thanks for watching, mister.
If it was up to me I’d have the truck all to myself for a couple hours, set up the cones, have this video playing as I’m practicing the maneuvers instead of a dude screaming at me
nice major thing to remember is if you turn wheel right trailer goes left and visa-versa.
Awesome video, it has helped me!
I’m in CDL School now(ATI Virginia) I hope this helps 😠🤪🤣😕
how can you see the corner of the box above the frame rail? should you be able to see this in the mirror?
Most students train and test in day cabs. They look out of the rear window to see the frame rail.
So what do you look for if you doing skills in an sleeper Bert
This video is very straight forward. I am sure it will be very helpful for me and many other. Thanks for it and keep it up
You bet, Jose! Thank you for watching and commenting.
Being 3 feet away from the cones works everytime? Will i be too much in the box ?
Not exactly sure what you're asking. Try me again, hiphop.
What if I.m not in a day cab?
How about the pup trailers is it the same method?
Stop when you see HALF of the landing gear.
easier way to back put hand on bottom of steering wheel then the direction your hand goes the trailer goes..
todd gallagher hey todd im in truck driving school now, were you just kidding about turning with the bottom of the steering wheel? does that really make parallel backing easier?
it's just a different way of saying the same thing as they said in the video; "Turn in the opposite direction of the way you want your trailer to move."
Good video will definitely help me out in the near future! Thank you!
Thank you for saying so, and for watching, Fredd.
I’m pulling a 40ft flatbed doing hotshot work. I’ve been practicing but my buckets:-) don’t offer the same reference points. But, given the same set-up, would you say the reference points are the same?
THANKS FOR ALL
I swear y'all the best..y'all give the best pointers I'm in CDL school and watching these videos with these pointers and reference points are very helpful thanks so much
Does this work for all size trailers?
It does not, Mr. Mike. Are you backing a pup?
Adam just want to said thank you for this video I just pass my CDL road test this pass Saturday after watching this video a few times is was easy for me thanks once again.
Can you see the corner of the trailer line up with the tractor frame if you are backing with a sleeper cab? I noticed the drivers in this video are in day cabs.
CDL College question can you use the same reference point in a Pup if not what would you recommend or advise if using a Pup
Great teaching techniques. Thanks Michael J of Delaware
Our stupid school in Vegas has a freaking sleeper with a 53 foot trailer! All the other school have small day cabs and small trailers. All I can say is we are bad ass for getting our licenses with these damn trucks! Great video!
We have/ had sleepers on ours as well
Can you do a skill test for a class b cdl video that all i got and driving test for straight tuck
ok on the first pull up for your setup how close do you want to be to the cones when you pull up 3-5 feet in front of them
Thank you so much! So much content that you have to weed through to the good ones! This is a good one
Wrong picture bruh that’s the left corner hitting the frame not the right...
Best best best of the best video. My test is in three days. Thanks guys
So you advise to start turning to the left once you start backing up ?
THE WAY YOU EXPLAIN THE PROCESS IS HELPFUL THANK YOU
I’m going to fail out of cdl school I really need help
Very good instructions very good instructor thanks 😊👍
Awesome
Thanks, Jun!
a class b dumb truck parallel parking please!!!!!!!!!!😊
Great learning technique. Thanks.
Thank you ! It's very usefull.
i just love thank you for this big help
great help. thank you
I like this videos 👍
Nice explanation
My question if anyone knows what about a shorter trailer can you use the same reference point like in a longer trailer as seen on video
FUCK NO, i tried this, i think our trailer is like 23 ft long, it's a box vvan, backing up until the corner of the trailer is over the frame rail in that puts you at damn near a 90° angle jackknife lmfao. i tried this and i was like wtfffffffffffffffffffff lol.
Great video!
Thanks
YOU SHOULD POST JOB OFFERINGS IN THE COMMENTS WHEN YOU HEAR IF THEM!!!
???
Great Teacher Adán is. Golf Job
Golf Job Adam.
I wonder if using the landing gear as a reference point on both sides would be easier to remember? One leg exposed(15deg) turn. Middle of bracket(30deg) turn. Both legs expos5(45deg) turn.
We do use the landing gear in our Offset and Alley Dock videos. Nicely done, James. Stay safe.
That's what I was taught
Great video i already learn my air breaks and pre trip and i start school in 14 days so am just gonna watch these videos for the next two weeks and learn these manuvers so when i reach school i am ahead of the class.even in my sleep i am doing pre trips for the pasts two months.
idk, i thought about this too, but i'm also thinking that if the instructor teaches his/her way, he/she will get mad at you for following these videos even though they're great videos.
@@mentuemhet yeah i think so too but i think its a good idea to learn as much as you can before you go in
