Who Will Lead American Islam? with Javad Hashmi

A great number of organizations - traditionalist, modernist, and Islamist - compete to lead the highly disparate American Muslim community. Who is gaining, who is slipping behind? As Middle Eastern influence diminishes, is a new, uniquely American Islam emerging? What is at stake?
Javad Hashmi is director of research and strategic communications at the Los Angeles-based Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC). He specializes in Islamic studies, with a focus on Qur’anic studies, Islamic intellectual history, and religious violence. Mr. Hashmi holds a BA from UC-Berkeley, an MA from Harvard, and is currently a PhD candidate at Harvard.
