    Rhetorical question for those reading... When you were devoting yourself 8-5 (plus prep and commute time) to a job, did you ever wish you were doing something else instead? Like, you were staring at the car bumper in front of you in rush hour traffic, and you thought, "I would rather be....[fill in the blank]". Or you were in a meeting in a cold conference room listening to your boss talk about "hitting the mark", and you thought, "I would rather be... [fill in the blank]". I remember just wanting to go grocery shopping in the middle of the work week. I remember just wanting to not "have to be" somewhere in the morning. I liked most of my jobs, but I just wanted the simplest of things, like taking my time getting up in the morning, and not rushing. Looking back, all I wanted was time. To have time. And to have that time belong only to me. Now, since early retirement a few years back, I can get up at 5am or not. I can go back to sleep or not. I can sip my coffee as long as I want. I can just do whatever I want and whenever I want to. I can go shopping in the middle of a Wednesday and take my time, never rushing. I wander the aisles and find items I never noticed before because grocery shopping was always a hurried chore on the weekends. Since I retired early I moved to Europe, where clothes dryers are a scarcity. I hang-dry my clothes and take my time enjoying the process. People ask me what I am "doing with my time". What I do "all day". I ask them (who are working 8-5), "what did you do today?". The private thought in their silence is palpable and telling. What WERE we doing all those years 8-5? There is absolutely nothing wrong with spending 8-5 now taking extra time to sip morning coffee, wander aisles at the grocery store, walk the dog, watch a little Azul on RUclips. Just do whatever you want. Look, just relish in time. Take your time. Just relish in you. Once you shake off that past, the present comes into focus pretty easily.

    Was laid off and so retired during the pandemic but had saved into a 401K for 35 years without really ever thinking about it until looking into it. Can afford to do most anything normal but am instead enjoying growing my hair into a cool ponytail, my beard in a big grey bush, feeding wildlife in the back yard, and playing simple electric guitar! :) Am done travelling but will make one trip with Mom to Italy for October, only because she wants me to go with her and we haven't seen each other in some time.

    My company paid a consultant to provide retirement classes when I was 24 and just started saving for retirement. The class was called "The Kids Table" and basically their advice was go with a target retirement fund that aligned with your 65th birthday. That was 20 years ago. It is the only thing I've ever invested in. How else can I better my finance?

    • @DhanaPayar

      target date funds have made me a multimillionaire. i also watched them drop 40% in a very short time and take a long time to recover.

      Agreed, when it comes time to retirement planning, following the steps of a well experienced advisor did the trick for me in barely 5 years, turned my $500k capital to 5 figure monthly dividends. If you want to keep it very safe, then Vanguard TDF may be for you.

    My take after twenty years of retirement and at age 79 is that you need a challenge or challenges. Gardening, sight seeing, golf etc. are good ways of passing the time but there isn't a challenge. Going on long distance hikes, a Camino, is a challenge, studying French in Paris is a challenge but there's no challenge in wandering around with a tour group. You also need to stay fit and healthy, and you should challenge yourself physically, not just gentle walks but hard exercise, hiking or cycling up a mountain.

    Retirement is no different than when I was working. I spent my whole life focusing on Physical, Financial, & Intellectual goals, they all paid off. I focus my retirement on those same goals, just without a job I spend more time on those goals. I train physically all year so I can go backpacking on Appalachian trail every spring. As an income investor I focus Financial goals on reinvesting unspent income. For intellectual goals I. Can fund my own research on Plasma research, electrical power systems, low carb recipes, medical research, whatever I am interested, never stop learning new things.

    I prepared as best as I could before I retired. Getting use to one check(pension/social security was the easiest part!)…I took a good look at my hobbies
    Reading, drawing, painting, gardening and working out …BEFOE I retired…..so I knew what I would be doing…to help with adjusting the week before my retirement I signed up for AARP classes and Michael classes..this helped me to adjust well the first several weeks.

  • @here_now_I
    @here_now_I 21 день назад

    Searching and defining a person's identity is by far the most challenging endeavor in life. In fact, most people likely treat meaning/purpose of life as a moving target and regularly change their definition over the course of life to temporarily distract or entertain themselves. For folks who are really serious about it, searching for the meaning of life is a life-long task, not something you do after you retire. In fact, for someone who is luck and has found a relatively satisfactory answer, retirement may not matter that much for him/her anymore. The ultimate meaning would allows you to do nothing without feeling lost, or do a lot without feeling frustrated.

      It’s really heartbreaking to see how inflation and recession impact low-income families. The cost of living keeps rising, and many struggle just to meet basic needs, let alone save or invest. It’s a reminder of the importance of finding ways to create financial opportunities. You've helped me a lot sir Ricky! Imagine i invested $50,000 and received $190,500 after 14 days

      I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of
      information can be a big hurdle. I've been
      making more than $200k passively by just
      investing through an advisor, and I don't have
      to do much work.. Inflation or no inflation, my

      people who panic.
