I often use Context filters to force Tableau to filter data the way I want it to appear. In the SuperStore data if I want the top 5 states in the East region if I do a dimension filter on region and a top N filter on Sales, I do not get 5 states in the east region. If I make region a context filter, Tableau filters to the east region, then it properly applies the top N filter and I get my top 5 states. I would argue that the context filter straddles the line between something an admin would apply and something a user would use. Sure it can improve performance, but it also can be used to increase interactivity.
