While I was doing this kind of work about 12yrs ago, I would have charged at the very least 350 to 400€ for this kind of work. IT guys hate working on laptops hardware (except maybe good ones such as thinkpad or gaming laptops, but clearly nothing under the 1000/1200€ mark) and all the problems that could come with it, so the high prices for cheap laptops technique is a very good deterent, when the fix is basically the price of a low end laptop whcih is basically already e-waste from start.
I used a laptop with a broken fan for years, but as i was not an idiot i had a base i used it with that had fans in it so it still had cooling until i bothered to replace the fan.
Sounds like my old acer in 2009. Tore the entire back off the thing exposed drive ram cooling pipes ect. Poor thing was propped up vertical with a box fan blowing directly onto it 😂 It work with a second screen like that for two years. That poor laptop ran 1400 hours of Dota and then shit the bed.
How about servers a couple of inches above rising water with loose dangling cables? (If I remember correctly we had no local IT and someone from HQ several states away would have to fly in to set up or fix anything.) The builders installing something in the bathrooms had drilled through a water pipe, put a ineffective patch on it, and left for the weekend. I opened on Monday and my feet went squish when I came in. Called the boss, then got to work fixing what I could.

Good luck replacing a laptop fan in a PC where the entire motherboard has to come out for the replacement. Been there, done that, would charge double that if I weren't just doing it for free to help a friend. $35 is a fantastic deal, especially since he removed the entire heatsink and applied new thermal past as well.
@@Tankurface You have not done much work on the mid tier HP Dell etc laptops have you ? The motherboards come out half the time to get to the CPU cooler and fan. The fans are sandwiched between the motherboard and keyboard plate, you have to disassemble them from the bottom up, meaning bottom cover, then motherboard, then you have access to the fan, that means every single ribbon connector, tiny fragile connector etc has to be disconnected. Higher end laptops are easier. My Dell XPS is pretty easy, but not all laptops are though. $35 an hour is suitable for an individual without massive overhead, but your not just removing and replacing the fan, your taking out the heatsink, cleaning off rock hard thermal past off the cooler and CPU die, cleaning the heatsink fins out, dusting the rest of the laptop put, giving the exterior a good clean etc if your doing a good job, then booting into the os, installing some load software to verify its functionality and to see how hot the machine is getting under load to make sure the customer isn't going to have issues. Because most people do not take care of their devices sometimes you have to deal with a crap ton of dog hair, dirt, and sometimes cigarette smoke and the wonderful smell of cat pee, way more common than you'd think. Generally any work I'm doing I would also go over the overall machines health, if they have any garbage installed or malware etc I would also make the customer aware and probably remove it as well with no additional cost. These things are built into repairs because it is good practice and will ensure the customer doesn't have any issues unrelated to your work, that they will inevitably blame you for anyway. $35, is absolutely more than a good deal, especially when the manufacturer or a lot of repair shops will charge you $150 or tell you to go kick rocks.
The point is they're way faster. No moving parts, but just like a CPU they produce waste heat. They do also 'wear out' especially if you fill them completely as they have to move data around periodically do preserve it and the NAND cells only have so many read/write cycles
They are rocks we made do math. Math makes heat. But basically. They dont move but have current(electricity) running through them, and that makes heat. Though, ssds overheating is probably more a laptop issue than a desktop issue.
Yep. As he told the customer, a SSD recovery would be $200 or more - possibly much more. And there would be no guarantee that everything could be recovered.
