      @gokudomatic Год назад +5

@@RandomGuyyy Classic mistake. People hope they can stick with their favorite language in Godot. But reality is, the true first class citizen language of Godot is GDScript. C# is more like the largest immigrant community. It has fully access to all Godot API, but at the cost of performance on each of those calls. And vectors, oh boy! Handling vectors in C# is a real pain where GDScript can manipulate them like native numbers.
The faster man accept GDScript, the less painful the experience in Godot will be.

@@TheMeanArena None. When do you imagine the right time to make this decision is? Before or after the bill comes due?
With respect, the whole "what money have you made to justify this decision" kind of thinking is totally backwards and wrong. If you have a game that has already made that much, then you're stuck with whatever choice you made well before release; so there's no decision to make and there may not be a next time successful enough for any lessons learned to matter.
Ergo, the proper time to think about which engine to use, including but not limited to the pricing structure for all levels of commercial success, is long before your game has a beta release let alone a single paying customer.

According to the FAQ, it's "per client install", so if they don't specify, you SHOULD ASSUME that if the same user installs the client on multiple devices (for example, PC and Steam Deck) you will be charged. You should also be fearful of disgruntled individuals or individuals looking to pirate games who can easily automate the process, which would make "review bombing" look about as bad as a "stern talking to".
A "fraud compliance team" would not be able to reverse the damage that could cause to developers' bottom lines. Even if they walk this back, I would not give them any more loyalty.

It's really just the coders that have issues with switching. Artists like me love Unreal, and want to be there anyways. What the coders don't understand, is that Unreal has changed the game development process. It's not just the coders making games in Unreal. The whole team is part of the process, in a way never seen before. For instance, I'm working on a small project right now, where the coders have embraced Blueprints, and the whole team can see the code and how it all works. Me, the character artist and animator, I'll likely be doing the code for all of the movement of the characters, or editing what we have to make it better. Wtih something like Blueprints, the whole team can use their specialties, and add to, or make their own Blueprints, that all work tegether. It's pretty crazy. As artists, we see things visually, and seeing the code work in a visual way allows us to better understand it, and even get involved more in the fine tuning of it all.

One big issue is the breach of trust. If Unity can do this now, even if they rollback, how can you trust Unity to not do something insane again in future in the same manner. For an example Rust developer said they wouldn't have issues paying the fee, but it's not what they "bought into" when choosing Unity = breach of trust. Beyond that this insane sounding pricing plan might also be some concotion of bait and switch, where they come up with an insane pricing model but rollback on it to "less insane" but yet worse than what developers bought into when choosing Unity. This way they could introduce new fees based sales/install to developers and now when that fee would have been sold to developers with bait & switch, they could increase those fees in long term.

Here's the thing, if your going to switch engines and you're not making a AAA FPS with photo-quality graphics why would you go with Unreal? Remember Epic put all Unreal devs releasing on iPhones on the line when they intentionally violated their contract with Apple.
Ultimately there are two things here, the first is just inertia. You're already invested in the Unity ecosystem. You're experienced and trained in it. There is a very real cost in leaving that, so there has to be a very real reason to accept that cost. The reason here isn't necessarily the $0.20, is the fact that they have proven the can and will change the deal under you. That's about trust; that's the other thing.
So do you really trust Epic? You're likely going to be paying that technical debt no matter what you choose to replace it with, so choose something you can trust. I would suggest an engine released under a license that prevents this behavior. There's a number of engines today that are MIT Licensed: Godot, Stride, Torque3D. Even Defold looks like a reasonable license (even if it's not one as widely used).

If Unity had said that they would take small revenue percentage based on profits that game makes or based on sales, I wouldn't have liked it but I could have accepted it. In that case it would have still meant that if game sells well we both make more money even if I would make slightly less than before. However a fee based on installs means that a game that is already sold will still keep generating fees for developer. Unity said that install and re-install counts as 2 installs and installing on your pc and laptop counts as 2 installs. This means that if some one didn't like a game they could rally people to mass uninstall and re-install and generate a massive bill. For example get 10000 people to reinstall your game for 10 times is already a 20000$ bill. Unity also didn't explain how they are collecting these install amounts so we should just "trust" what ever number they claim to be owed.
On an unrelated topic today I started testing out Unreal Engine

I too started Unity back in 2014, I remember back when having shadows from 3D models was a pro feature, and you could buy pro as a one time purchase rather than a monthly sub. I've learned so much from the engine, I literally only have the job that I have now because of my knowledge with the Unity engine. But even if unity completely rolls back everything they have announced, I'm still cutting ties with them. They would literally have to pay me to keep using it.
I'll still stick with it for now, I want to see what happens and how far back things will roll. But as of yesterday I have begun learning Godot (seriously this time) and will be making my game there from now on. (Nothing against Unreal, Godot just suits my needs better) Unity has burned my trust in them too many times and this last fire has been the biggest that I've ever seen. I was worried when the company went public, and I guess those fears came true. Its sad to see such a beloved engine die just because people want more money.
I wish you good luck on your projects. Sticking and switching will both be difficult, I understand your decision to stay. Keep on making games and don't let this kill your passion!

I hate to say it but this is what we get with commercial software. Unity is a public and huge corporation. They can do whatever they want. I wish the world was different but it is not. I am moving to Godot. Shame about my work and time I spent learning Unity but I kinda felt it coming one way or another. They need more money even if they make billions. Even if they cancel this move they lost my trust. I know it means nothing to them but I know I need to switch to Godot no matter how good or bad it is . My friends made a classic roguelike game "Jupiter Hell" on a custom C++ engine they built from scratch. They themselves called it insane because of the amount of work they had to put into programming a 3D engine from scratch. Porting problems ( like porting the game to Nintendo Switch) are also taking them huge amount of time and money. But I see now it was me who was insane to believe that corporations want to make my life easier. I am to stupid to create my own engine but hopefully Godot does not go commercial like that.

    - Instead of charging per units sold or on profit, they charge on something no publisher or developper as any control over.
    - It was originally retroactive. They backed out of that already given how highly illegal that would be.
    - Streaming services that provision games on demand will rather remove all Unity-based games than take the risk.
    - Requires some pretty intrusive spyware to report about installations. Again, Streaming Services will never allow it.
-Free-to-play model will effectively lose money.
    - it's not the business of a jumped-up Engine developer to know or monetise on installation fees.
    - Publishers and giant streaming services have not signed on any agreement with Unity. It is effectively extorsion. They'll laugh them out out of court.

The recent technology advances of Unreal engine has put a death warrant out for Unity. If you're going to switch its better to do it early than to hope Unity changes its direction. As for payment on installs, any game developer that releases a game makes most of their money early on, which is a problem if a year later players decide to play the game again and re-install it. At that time the dev has to pay again for all the installs without being paid for it as they had a year previous. As for IP addresses, mine changes each time I reboot my router, and I constantly get messages from google telling me someone has accessed my account from a different machine even though its still me. $200K sounds like a lot, but after Steam takes its cut, and you pay for other expenses, and taxes you'd be lucky to have enough money for a one man team to pay their rent or grocery bills.

It is a totally unworkable business model.

Just to be clear, I'm not against people having to pay more when they win more, which you focus on in the middle of the video.
    What alarms me:
1 "We have altered the deal. Pray we do not alter it farther." An absolutely disgusting breech of trust for indie hopefuls. The games that have been getting worked on. For years who are aiming for a December launch are terrified because they couldn't plan for this. Porting studios could not plan for this.
2 Modders, Pirates, and even the average customer isn't trying to actively hurt the developers of the games they're interested in.
3 They can't give any good explanation on how they plan to accurately and legally track the installs, then when pressured they just claim to make an estimate based on aggregate data... Which means nobody can verify whatever number they want to make up. If they can't be transparent on the tracking they're going to charge people for, then by definition they can't truly charge based on performance because their numbers to track performance are made up.
4 When they try to cover the damage by saying "it'll only effect 10% of our users" this figure is asdumedky based on their metrics which we have already established isn't trustworthy.
5 The install fee is monthly. Most games don't even get their first payout until 2-3 months after release. That's a long gap to have to find money to cover new monthly bills for.
6 Yet more evidence that speculative investment via the stock market does more consistent harm to the participants than it does good. There was probably a time where that system made sense, but now it's gotten so divorced from the reality of use value of any given product or service that any announcement of IPO from any tool small studios depend on should be an immediate red flag to start migrating.
I hate this. It benefits literally nobody. The absolutely best possible outcome is the CEO getting ousted from business due to the blatant insider trading ahead of this announcement.

    - Make 200 000 dollars in 12 month period
    - sell 200 000 copies of a game.
I would LOVE TO GET TO POINT I MUST PAY!
After you make 200k in 12 months and sell 200k copies you must pay 30 cents for each copy sold over 100k. So at stage you each 200k you must pay 20 k (far less than unreal) . You can always just add 20 cents to your price. You will probably never need to give it to unity and if you have a runaway hit you have the clients pay your 20 cents!

Wow, they never fail to absolutely demolish really dedicated community. I mainly work with unreal for my work but I feel so bad for all game devs who are trying to make game and be successful with using unity.
I have no idea why they thought it is good idea to implement the system where you get punished for being successful. If people think it has no impact on you, then think again, it does to everyone who use unity. Think of you and all unity game dev are crew on ship and successful indie game devs/studios and publishers are captain and commanders. If those people decide to abandon the ship, who are going to be left on the ship and need to sail the ship without dying. Yes you. And to make things worse, if those successful people and publisher leaves, unity will fall hard and they will implement worse system to make you suffer.
Long story short, Unity is not the company you should care and trust. Even if they retract this stupid decision, people are not coming back and the fact the they considered that this is acceptable will never change and you can be sure that they will do more shit in the future. Damages have been already done.
