    You left the mattress sanitized and bug free and chose to use the $300 make the house feel like home by not leaving it bare and uninviting. I think it was probably nice for him to not walk into a barebones apartment. You left him with a space that didn’t feel like a totally blank slate, which might have felt overwhelming to get filled/stocked with daily use items. You did a phenomenal job. Thank you so much for the work you do

      This was my very thought. Buying a mattress is 1 big project. Getting all this interior stuff is 100 small decisions - that can be really a lot for a tired mind. So I agree wholeheartedly, Bea's choice was fine!

    • @maise_elf
      @maise_elf Month ago +361

      Couldn’t agree more! Getting the mattress replaced will be a lot easier on the mind than trying to find decor to make the flat feel more homely. He’ll only have to find a mattress he likes and a company will be able to deliver it and potentially even remove the old one. I couldn’t imagine trying to decide the right things for a blank slate space after being unable to consider the space for a period of time.
      The right call was definitely made here!

      Idk about bug free. Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to get rid of, and just spraying things down with bed bug killer isn't actually that effective. It can take months and even years to actually get rid of them, and there's a lot you have to do to make sure it happens (like vaccuming the room and bed, and washing the sheets like once a week). Speaking as someone who's had them.
      But yes, what she did was still awesome.

      Fr, I may not be a guy and I may not have gotten this bad (yet, knock on wood), but I know how much depression SUCKS. For me it’s always been eating (too little or too much) and having an extremely untidy room, and I always feel horrible and tend to hate people that I normally love. Sometimes I even get close to having a room like his flat, especially with laundry. Sometimes help or a good day is really hard to get but very appreciated.

    Tip from a broke person who battled the dreaded bedbugs-- a cheap bug-proof zipper seal on a mattress can make a world of difference. Like once you've vacuumed and sprayed and sanitized, if you seal the bed, you can starve out anything in there for as long as it takes. My building had an infestation and despite fumigation, my neighbors and I still had problems. Sealing the beds helped because a lot of us were broke college kids. Obv you have to toss what you can, but for things like mattresses which are expensive to replace, sealing it was the next best thing. I can't speak for everyone, but for me, that $25 mattress seal saved my bed.

    As someone who has suffered from depression from time to time, I can say from experience it gets to the point where you feel totally worthless and you develop that internal monologue of tearing yourself down. Ironically, what helps with that is doing for others/acts of service like volunteering. That makes it so you are redirect your thoughts and focus on others instead of yourself and how miserable/worthless you feel. Eventually that becomes a habit and you can slowly get better.

    Even these little bits of decor and new plates/cutlery are enough to lift the spirits of the residents. On top of that, everything is clean. The bed not being new is not an over sight on your end. The next time you’d like to make improvements to the bedding but lack the budget, I recommend getting a mattress topper. It’s cheaper than buying a whole new bed, but makes the whole thing feel brand new.

    • @Oakleaf700
      @Oakleaf700 Month ago

      When one buys a new mattress, buy a mattress protector at the same time. Cheaper than a topper {Ik ea sell good and affordable ones}

    • @bichen-up-ur
      @bichen-up-ur Month ago +8

      I agree, a mattress protector is a great investment to protect a new mattress. Looking at the prices on Amazon, a queen sized topper is around $40 and a protector being around $20. A new mattress+protector would be ideal, but when the budget is tight a topper could give the existing bed a new lease of life and give the resident a comfortable space to rest, while leaving remaining coin for homely bits.

    • @Oakleaf700
      @Oakleaf700 Month ago

      What I used to detest about loving in rented accommodation as a teenager was the state of the mattresses- oh my goodness, so foul!
      I bought blankets to covet the mattresses as back then there weren't protectors.
      I hope landlords now treat their tenants better, and replace mattresses between tenants. {They certainly didn't used to do this}. I think the landlords bought the cheapest, nastiest mattresses available from second hand shops, we were lucky that there were no bedbugs at least! 😆

      @paytonsmith8358 Everything has been disinfected. The resident will not be sleeping on top of any infestations. There are multiple precautions the resident can take to prevent the mice from coming back, a completely cleaned and disinfected home is a great start to that. Since the resident has expressed their motivations to work towards further life improvements, I’m sure he will buy a new mattress when he sees fit.

    Don't underestimate the value of decor for making someone feel better. Yes a mattress may have been more of an "essential" but mentally having a space that feels good to be in is huge.

      I think it was also logical to leave something like picking out a mattress to him. What if she ended up wasting her money because she bought a mattress that wasn't comfortable for him and he had to just go buy a new one anyways?
      Those sorts of purchases are better left to the person, so they can go to a mattress store and test a few out to get an idea of what works best for them

      @8888RFHow do you make yourself clean something when you’re in the hell of depression? Sleeping is difficult, feeling tired and overwhelmed even when you do get some sleep still doesn’t feel like you have enough energy to get up and move into the day. It’s knowing that you need to go to the bathroom, but you wait and wait some more until you finally move to the bathroom. It’s a struggle to shower, brush teeth, and eat something that even interests you. Letting someone else come into your space and see the full sink, a floor that needs sweeping, etc is a big step in reining in the messy areas before they really get out of control.

    I accidentally ended up working as a cleaner when I was 19. One of the houses I used to clean had 5 kids (2 adopted) and like 6 pets. The husband passed away, and the mom shut herself in her room and never came out. It was super sad, and the house was a WRECK! But it was really impactful, the kids were super sweet and deserved a safe and clean environment to grow up in. I really hope the mom was able to recover since and be there for them…

    • @zqueen3871

      After my partner died unexpectedly, I became completely unable to care for myself let alone anyone else for at least 4 months. The fact that the mom you worked for managed to hire someone to clean shows she was using what little she had left in her to make sure the kids and pets didn’t end up in squalor. I was so grateful my partner and I didn’t have kids because I knew I’d be useless to care for them during that time, no matter how much love there is. She was probably even more depressed knowing the pressure of being left with so many kids to raise on her own, and kids that themselves were grieving. That’s so overwhelming. I appreciate you being there for a family after their loss, knowing what it’s like to be that widow, but without nearly as much responsibility, thank god. I’m sure she greatly appreciated it too, and at least speaking from my experience, I do think she was able to be a mom again after a while. With time, we don’t heal per se, but we re-learn to survive and can get back to at least a basic level of functioning.

    Wow Bea, you and your partner crushed it! 👏One small idea that might make the work easier is that using a trash grabber or shovel could makes pickup way easier and helps avoid cuts from cans or other sharp stuff hiding in the pile. Hope that helps!

    I think one of your first videos was deep cleaning a mattress. So I have every faith that you did that. The problem with buying new matresses is that people need different things from them, particularly if they have health conditions. So as long as it's clean and usable, you're absolutely fine. x

      @FoxSky-md1ul Month ago +10

      "brave" What nonsense, its laziness and you know that other people live next to him, creating problems for others too, so it would only be a matter of time before people would start complaining if they haven't already called institutions that often just shift the problem from one to another

    • @Channel13Static
      @Channel13Static Month ago +35

      @FoxSky-md1ulyou’re honestly a terrible person. This is not laziness. Laziness is someone who does not want to clean, people with mental illnesses like depression want to have a clean space, they lack the chemicals in their brain that make them get up and clean. Be grateful and blessed that you think this way because you obviously have never dealt with a serious problem like this. I hope you have a great day even if you don’t deserve it.

    • @FoxSky-md1ul
      @FoxSky-md1ul Month ago +9

      @Channel13Static na, hypocritical people like you are terrible who don't know how to praise the real values or work, you are just phony who knows only to act for likes but not actually help. And you know what i have dealt, everybody dealt with soem type of depression or had serious problem, but they dont wai for others or do nothing they keep fight and ms not for themself only, but for others you dont deserve nothing hypocritical phony
