I am Colombian-American and this movie hit home and stirred so many emotions. La abuela reminds me of my mother so much and Louisa and her song really connected with me. Hearing Carlos Vives makes my heart swell and Seba Yatra that was beautiful. I love my culture and this movie is great.
“The colors of what you wear and the decorations reflect the place” but that makes Mirabel’s skirt even more perfect! It has representation of her family and the miracle; together they are the center of the place they live.
Thank you for taking the time to share more deeply about Colombia. I'm in my 60's. Growing up in California, we visited and knew much about Mexico. But for Colombia, I only ever heard about the cartels, violence, political upheaval and... coffee. I loved this movie! It made me thirsty to know and see more of Colombia. Your commentary was so thoughtful and heartfelt!
I want to thank you for giving your point of view on this. I love listening to people that are passionate about something, and because of my rather sheltered white-bread existence, there's cultures for which my entire experience with that culture comes down to mass media. At that point, it's really nice to hear from someone that's part of the culture on how accurate the representation is, what they may have missed, etc.
