Montecatini Alto at one time had a protective wall and in this wall 25 Portas, or doors. These doors were actually towers and some of these still remain today. Montecatini Alto, like Montecatini Terme has connections with the powerful Florentine Medici family, for history lovers this is a “must visit!”
Montecatini Alto is small but perfectly formed, if history is not your thing be sure to take the time to savour the views from one one the many viewing points. Then stop off in Piazza Giuseppe Giusti to enjoy local cuisine and browse some of the little boutique shops that sell hand crafted items, food and souvenirs.
FUNICULAR - FUNICOLARE DI MONTECATINI
Perhaps the most fun way for children and adults alike to reach Montecatini Alto is to take the funicular or as the Italians say Funicolare di Montecatini. The funicular runs regularly but is seasonal. Please check the official Montecatini funicular website www.funicolare-montecatini.it

I stayed here during my vacation to Italy. I must admit that I was thrilled with the area. Also the shopkeepers took such pride in their businesses. Each morning, like clockwork, they were there cleaning their storefronts. That’s a quality we don’t see here in the United States.

I lived in Montecatini for 15 years. I have lots of memories and I still have friends in the area over there that I want to say Hi ...
Geographically is placed in a very crucial point.. easy to reach the mountains and close to the sea as well.. God bless.

Thanks very much.. yes it’s a treasure of memories.. missing the good food of the different restaurant and agriturismo of the areas... and the beautiful cities like Firenze where I use to work and Lucca with the walls all around the city ... and the medieval celebrations in those little towns ... I already toke my family over there twice since 2011 when I moved in USA and hope be able to go sometime again... 👋👍

On holiday with my family in montacatini some years ago, we went to the alto on the funicular. It was wonderful. A bit like going back in time. But it was a such a hot day. The cool drinks in the cafe when we got back down, were so welcome.
