I just spent 2 months in the wilderness in a treatment program. It was hardcore camping; no electronics, no tents, weren't aloud to know the time, no light after dark except for the moon, etc. It was the single hardest experience I've ever gone through. I'd just like to share that the first thing I did when I got my phone back for my flight home is listen to my Beatles music. And I have never got a feeling like that when I listened to music, ever. We are so blessed to have music and people with such passion like them. The Beatles are literally my heroes, for without them I wouldn't realize the impact music has on me.
This makes me cry so hard after seeing that too. I love it so much I am trying to find guitar sheet music for it right now. I respect that man. The feels.
Agreed. It's been a while since I cried but this time I did and felt a sense of sadness I haven't felt in a long time. My hearts and prayers go out to the father and family.
This is the song my brother and I played and sang for my father on his deathbed. It will always remind me of the greatest man I've ever known. May he rest in peace.
So , apparently when the Beatles moved to America , the civil rights were going on and a slang term for woman is bird so technically , this song is about a black woman . John Lennon himself said that that was the inspiration for this song . Totally changed this song for me .
This song is about being black in America during the Civil Rights movement, however if I remember correctly they said it wasn't quite that literal, not necessarily about a black chick (as we would say it in America). Just about a black person. Because women don't have wings.
An Artsy Galactic Cat It is about that very subject for sure ! And for - the others, who think it might be disrespectful - they're completely wrong. Thanks for sharing :o)
Well, I've looked it up on Wikipedia (smh i know) and it cites an interview in which Paul McCartney (not John Lennon) said it was about a black woman specifically (even though the idea he was putting across of fighting for civil rights applied to black men as well). I can't remember exactly where it was that I read it wasn't specifically about a black "bird". Who knows? Good song.
I sang this to my sons, sang it to my first grandson. And now I get to sing it once again to my new grandson. I caught my son also singing to him, it brought a tear to my eyes.
You know, Lynzee, that's not really fair, singers/songwriters of this quality are as rare as honest politicians. That said, there are lots wonderful, hooky, thoughtful, singable songs coming out all the time. Nothing wrong with Coldplay's Viva La Vida, Vanessa Carlton's A Thousand Miles is lively and lovely, Gaga's Alejandro is fine. Are they Lennon/McCartney or Harrison? Of course not, but there are good songs every year.
When I was younger my mom use to play this song a lot. We had 2 cockatiels and every time the part with the bird noises came on, they would get so happy and try to chirp along. I miss those birds so much and this song keeps my memory of them going strong.
This song will always remind me of the love of a grieving father towards his dying baby son, and after the father losses the love of his life. Yup, watched "Blackbird with Lennon". I end up with tears. Such a beautiful sad moment. RIP Lennon James and his mother Ashley. Stay strong Chris Picco.
I remember that Paul said that this song talks about the civil rights of the black people. He wrote this song as a reaction to racial tensions escalating in the United States in the spring of 1968, so the song is symbolic because doesn't talk about a bird which is black. It's quite beautiful.
This song became 10x more amazing and beautiful to me after finding out it's about the civil rights struggle of black people in America. I was surprised the Beatles cared about that, and I respect them much more now knowing that they did.
I had been doing poetry readings. I had been doing some in the last year or so because I've got a poetry book out called Blackbird Singing, and when I would read "Blackbird", I would always try and think of some explanation to tell the people, 'cause there's not a lot you can do except just read the poem, you know, you read 10 poems that takes about 10 minutes, almost. It's like, you've got to, just, do a bit more than that. So, I was doing explanations, and I actually just remembered why I'd written "Blackbird", you know, that I'd been, I was in Scotland playing on my guitar, and I remembered this whole idea of "you were only waiting for this moment to arise" was about, you know, the black people's struggle in the southern states, and I was using the symbolism of a blackbird. It's not really about a blackbird whose wings are broken, you know, it's a bit more symbolic. - Paul McCartney, Interview with KCRW's Chris Douridas, May 25, 2002 episode of New Ground (17:50-19:00)
True difference between literally and figuratively or metaphorically. The word literally is so overused today and often erroneously used. Poetry equals songs without audible music.
For those of you who have already learned Blackbird on guitar, I recommend learning Bourree in E minor by Bach. McCartney has said in interviews that the song was a major influence on Blackbird and that he tried to play Bourree on classical guitar as a kid. It's worth checking out and a difficult song to learn!
Best band ever. I just saw Paul last night in Indianapolis and I was blown away. Amazing lights and fireworks. I would wish I was born in his era but I'm too grateful for what I have right now.
So...let me just say a few things. I didn't really know her. I saw her in the halls at school, said hi. We had both complimented on eachother's clothes or hair or something. We weren't friends, but I honestly really liked her. When I first heard about what happened to her, I couldn't think of her face, I tried to think it up so that I could...remember...and then they had her picture at the vigil..and I recognized her face...and everyone else was in tears because they could remember her...and so could I. I just didn't know. I felt really bad because I didn't know her name until it was too late. I didn't even notice she wasn't in the halls lately. Not until I thought about it that night and realized that yes, it was who I thought it was because she wasn't there anymore. Do I feel like a bad person?...No. Not really. It's just that I realize now that we have to go ahead and make friends with those people that you always say, "Hey, maybe they'd be a good friend." Because you never know when it's going to be too late. I didn't know her all that well, but her death has taught me to get out of my comfort zone and just...do it before it's too late. Because truly, you really never know. It's crazy, right? Me crying over the death of someone I never knew. And at the vigil, I'm sure everyone felt it, but she was there. I could, but it was just a faint feeling...a brush. More of like when someone walks in the room and you see them come in. She was there with her friends who were shedding more tears than I ever could for a stranger. And I saw the impact she has on so many people. And then I realized...yeah. She was a good friend. And maybe, I'll see her one of these days in Heaven, and we'll actually be able to be friends this time. R.I.P. Brianna Cox. I'm sorry I never took the time to know you.
A beatle fan suggested to sing this song among people who have several psychological difficulties, in the Netherlands. According to him this song fitted best in this situation.
I just saw Paul McCartney at Lollapalooza live and in introducing this song he specifically said it was written to support the plight of black civil rights. Beautiful people, beautiful singing with a beautiful message
I was born in the Beatles earliest years, much of their music was grown into my bones. There is a song for every chapter of the past but this one made me become quiet even in my wildest days. That little black bird still comes around and lord I love it. Now old and just getting older but Black bird sounds forever like spring on a sunny day.
My dad born 24/12/1947 loved the Beatles all the way in South Africa, to be more specific he was from Senekal, a little town in the Free State. He always said to me you know that "Sir McCartney". Never paid no mind. Until a few days ago, I learnt why this song was made. Rest in Peace Sir Ramotasi Rapuli, I get it now.
I found this song because i just watched a video about a man whos wife died in child birth, his newborn son fallowed after. the video was him playing this song for his son while under life support. I will never think of anything else when i hear this song.
as beautiful as this original song is the father's singing was so deep and carried so many emotions with it, it was just different to listen too, it flood me with emotions ;( Rip lennon and ashley picco.
My beautiful brother Stephen was a drummer in our band.. he made me perfect this song and I’d often sing it to him with him strumming his guitar… he had a tragic accident when he was 29.. I was 20 he died… this is our song… love you forever my beautiful brother ❤
I know this song has more than meets the ear to its meaning, but I still hear it inside my head everytime I see or hear a blackbird. I have one at my bird feeder this year, a lonely male, calling for his ladies and rivals to arrive. He is so precious to me.
"Blackbird" seems like such an innocent song, and many parents have chosen it to lull their kids to sleep. Amazingly, the song is actually about an African-American girl facing racism in her daily life. "You were only waiting for this moment to be free."
That's funy how people like this song and don't have any idea why it was made. This song was made in a age where the black people didn't have freedom. And when he says take these broke wings and learn how to fly. He meant "fight for your liberty" I love how these good and awesome songs are related with our history :)
Aging and waking up is the beautiful reality of this beautiful music when we approach the ultimate end of our lives. "You were only waiting for this moment to arise"
On my list of interesting birds, crows beat the common blackbird. Blackbirds are better singers, however. No matter which way, I still really like this song!
lurpinator Google the story of Paul killed in a car accident in 1966 and replaced by a look alike. John Lennon gave him the name Faul ( fake Paul). Look at all the evidence and you decide.
***** I understand what you're saying friend. It seems very ridiculous. It's funny but I missed the story back in 1966 when it was first talked about. I was a teenage Beatle fan back then. (I'm an oldie. lol) It caught my interest on utube. It doesn't matter now. On to the next thing.......... :))
Whenever I listen to this song... My heart feels warm and loved.. Though no one's there by my side, I'd still learn to see, all my life, I've been waiting for this moment to be seen :'> These songs are the best~
Just so everyone is clear. In the UK we sometimes call girls "birds" Listen to the song knowing that and you will see that this song is all about civil rights :) It baffles me how right wing bigot and racists call themselves beatles fans

Not even fire is allowed?
We did have fire but you had to make it from sticks.
Penny Lane that sounds interesting
***** of course. Best experience ever.
i did the same thing back in 2008, those programs are intense. I slipped up a lot after going there though, i hope your doing well
This song made me cry harder and gave more meaning than before when i saw the father singing to his dying son :(
I have to agree 100% this made me cry too and I see this song in a different way.
Hunter Proctor 'dying' don't comment if you don't read.
This makes me cry so hard after seeing that too. I love it so much I am trying to find guitar sheet music for it right now. I respect that man. The feels.

Hunter Proctor The baby actually died in his father's arms the following day.
Paul's voice in this is gorgeous
just listen to this song at the moment I am determined to kill everyone to calm
He is an absolutely amazing singer. His song writing abilities are top notch. I think he is my favorite single musician
This is the song my brother and I played and sang for my father on his deathbed. It will always remind me of the greatest man I've ever known. May he rest in peace.

Beautiful and I pray for peace foe you and your brother .

By far one of the most beautiful songs EVER.
In an interview, Paul McCartney said that "Blackbird" was not about a bird. It was symbolic of the Civil Rights Movement happening in America.
He also said Fool on the Hill was about MLK
The Beatles were very progressive and about civil rights. Fantastic song writing.
It was about the Little Rock 9
Where he grew up, girls were called birds.
👍
Man, I got a broken heart right now and this song makes me cry. Damn.
SithAssassinOfSkyrim cheer up bud, happens to all of us. Go listen to Twist and Shout, that'll make you feel better ( hopefully )

Forever will be my favorite song. I wish songs like this existed in today's music industry.

If you haven't seen "Blackbird with Lennon", then I suggest you go watch it right now, changed this song completely for me.
RIP Buddy.

Definitely , RIP little Lennon and his mom 😢
It should be put on iTunes for popular demand! That poor man..
That was a powerful video that man is a trooper RIP to both lennon and Chris's wife
It made me cry because i read the part about his wife and just seeing him singing to his son..sigh RIP Lennon and Ashley
Over 40 years ago in 1973 I heard this song and it made me cry especially in the worst times of my life.

Wade Wilson I feel so empty.

Zion Robison,

I love this song .. The lyrics are amazingly well written , this version is great .. melts my heart .. I love music so much
No one makes music like this anymore.
I love this song. The simplicity of the guitar is 2:19 beautiful… The lyrics seem simple as well, but speak deeply…

Beatles found gold with this song. Beautiful.

Rainbow Rowell queremos segunda parte!!

This song is my favorite song ever. It doesn't matter how late after their time I was born, it still means so much to me and my life.
That's funy how people like this song and don't have any idea why it was made. This song was made in a age where the black people didn't have freedom. "Nada Termina Nunca"
After over 40 years, I finally understand the meaning of this song. Amazing!
I heard this song a couple of years ago and I really liked it but I forgot about it until I heard it on last weeks Criminal Minds.
Songs don't usually make me emotional. Something about this just tugs my heartstrings.
Hope ya ll know this song is about Black women in the States and their struggles in the 60's
Hope you realize this wasn't just for black women, but for black men, too. The song was made for the civil rights movement.
Nope googled it. You're right.
A bit late but you are all right
Aging and waking up is the beautiful reality of this beautiful music when we approach the ultimate end of our lives. "You were only waiting for this moment to arise"
If you dont listen to something...how can you ever hear anything?
I always think about my papa when I hear them sing 😌 it just relaxes me he used to sing all of the Beatles songs to us ❤️
On my list of interesting birds, crows beat the common blackbird. Blackbirds are better singers, however.
No matter which way, I still really like this song!
It was a song about the civil rights movement
kaleidoscopeheavens
you may be true, but I bet it was also meant for other listeners to have their own interpretations and messages as well.
I love dis song. Reminds me of good times. And I miss those good times :(
I know this was ten years ago but real, TheStarkman123
Faul, you did a good job there.
It's paul :( Paul never died. Still alive today at age 72
Hayley Hifey Paul, Faul, I don't know friend. I just think it is possible that Paul could have died. It's intriguing anyway. :0)
zsagi777 Huh?

I'm talking about a book that mentioned this song.
Ah, I see
Whenever I listen to this song... My heart feels warm and loved.. Though no one's there by my side, I'd still learn to see, all my life, I've been waiting for this moment to be seen :'> These songs are the best~
God bless the father of little Lennon James
How can a song be so deep yet so light to listen to.
Can we please make this the official Bran Stark theme tune?

Me too! It's relaxing and just so beautiful! I can't help but feel happy whenever I listen to this song(:
Just so everyone is clear. In the UK we sometimes call girls "birds" Listen to the song knowing that and you will see that this song is all about civil rights :) It baffles me how right wing bigot and racists call themselves beatles fans
Wow! I had thought that this song was about civil rights, but I thought it was toward racism, not sexism, that is really interesting!
Ha. Interesting. Could you explain more? What was exactly the problem about civil rights those days, that they're singing about?
idk, it just sounded like something towards the civil rights for me, not sure why.
Its about the struggle of African American women in the 60s in America
Nicky Jones Om I see. That's why it's blackbird and not just a bird, right?
A good for those who are broken & battered & wake up to restart life again. Thanks for sharing.
